I could also go on about how the character of Brick was wasted post-Amy, but I'll save that rant for another day.

Brick was definitely a wasted character...he should have stayed throughout the duration being part-Lockridge, part-Capwell (sort of)...

It's amazing thinking of all these different families that came and went when the show was only on 8 1/2 years! Sometimes characters, except the Capwells, came and went in a blink of an eye.

  2. Besides the Capwells (and to a lesser extent) the Lockridges, SB was never able to establish another family that really clicked. There were sooo many attempts to start a new core family. Just off the top of my head, I remember...

    Cruz's extended family

    Gina's extended family

    The Donnleys

    The DiNapoli sisters

    The Richards

The four "orphan boys and Cassie"- an attempt at a "different kind of family"

    The Walkers (at the end)

The DeAngelis family (at the end)

Not to mention the Perkins and Andrade families which started the show but were soon gone.

Out of all these unsuccessful attempts, which family group do you think had the most potential if maybe handled better?

The Dobsons so many idiotic mistakes during their second tenure. They also fired Justin Gocke.

Gina and Brandon's relationship was one of the best developed...and sweet ones...on the show. Gina was the type of character that needed a Brandon to show her softer side.

  4. Does anyone believe the rumor about tension between Deidre Hall and Suzanne Rogers on DAYS? It's so odd how their characters were supposed to be best friends, but they NEVER have scenes with each other. I know there was a rumor floating about it...but what could possibly be the cause of it if true?

I want to say maybe Erik Estrada( when he did that Telemundo soap). He has been a Diva since his Chips days. Larry Wilcox was pretty much forced off the show by the last season. Estrada also got rid of several other cast member he felt were a threat to his popularity.

I remember reading rumors that Jane Wyman would often get people fired that bugged her.

  5. Wow...was that an actual new set in today's episode??? I can barely process that. Anything that takes place outside of that blue room is such a nice change of pace. I really wish they could do some sort outside shooting again...like Salem Place in the 90s. It would help the show not feel so claustrophobic in these ultra tiny sets.

Maybe in the minority from what I read, but I'd take Freddie with a little extra meat on him any day.  But, I tend to like more different types of men than the "standard handsome" we get over and over on soaps.

  6. I do feel, too, that the actor cut off his nose to spite his face when he appeared to object to the pairing with BM. It actually had potential and the story could have been a breath of fresh air. But nope! It would have taken his character in a new direction by being involved with the Abbotts. It was obvious thought that without his character's wife, kids, and Jill mostly gone there wasn't a need for the character unless he went into a new direction.

i know i'll get haters for this but i didn't mind JB as Vicky. However, I could not stand her as Marley. So darn bland. At the end if JB didn't want to play both parts they should have dumped her and taken EW back as both Marley/Vicky. What would the show have had to lose? An expensive contract of JB's that caused the show to pay her AND EW? I think most fans at that point would have been okay with the recasts considering it was going back to EW.

That would have been interesting to have EW back in both roles, and as you said, at that point in the game, what did the show have to lose?

Anne Heche was so good at playing Marley and Vicky that you could tune in halfway through an episode and know that Vicky was pretending to be Marley. That's how good she was. Jensen Buchanan was just awful in both roles. I know she has her fans, but I'm not one of them.

Not to mention how JB refused to play both roles so we got that horrible Marley now played by EW after a fire...so bad. Not to mention that EW was like a foot taller than JB...did she grow while she was in the coma, too?

The Loving TV movie was slotted 9-11 on Sunday night and achieved a 13.3/23 rating which placed it just outside the top 20 for the week.

It was up against Summer reruns on CBS/NBC.

It would be interesting to know just how many people turned in to the daytime premiere the very next day.

I thought the Red Swan contained the codicil inside that stated Mac had another daughter (Paulina) and that's why people were being led to find it. I don't remember all the details either though. I just thought it was a way Mac was trying to lead people to know there was another daughter out there. Was the codicil actually inside it? I don't remember. I thought it was...but maybe not.

And then why would Mac make it so difficult and not just tell people he had another daughter? I know, I know. They were scrambling trying to come up with story after DW death, so they get a pass on this one IMO.

I was disappointed that she didn't talk about Rachel & Ada & there being parallel to Erica & Mona.

And on Loving there was Kate/Ava...there was definite parallels to all three...the long suffering single mother and the scheming social climbing daughter.

So far Loving has hit a 4.3, which is a little lower than RH was doing at 12.30, so when Loving moves into that slot it will probably be within that range. Maybe hit a 4.5. Will be interesting to see.

I wonder if Lov or RH did anything story wise to attract attention the week of the switch?

Did SFT see an opportunity to bump up their numbers and grab some viewers who might have switched when RH was moved?

And it seemed that SFT's ratings on NBC did pick up a bit for a year or so showing some promise, but it just didn't pan out eventually. Poor Ryan's Hope...they were thrown under the bus for sure.

  13. For those of you that remember the Dobson's brief return, what did you think of the stories they developed? I felt they started off pretty strong and reset a lot of stuff (Mason for example, Santana's return), but the stories didn't have the magic of the earlier ones for some reason. Still, there work is 100X better than what we're getting today on the last 4.

I have to say Eric Martsolf. To me, Travis Schuldt played Ethan too much like a bratty, annoying little kid, whereas Eric Martsolf played him more as a mature adult. In some ways, it was almost like they played two different characters.

I agree...both actors were so different. Travis came off as very flat to me. Eric's version is what I think of when I think of "Ethan."

Yes, McClatchey was an FOJ. Love yourline about Justin Chambers having the last laugh. Very true!

The last actor to play Nick, Mark Mortimer...I thought he was so dreamy at the time. :)

They had such a time of it dealing with the aftermath of Mac's death. Lewis Arlt aka Ken Jordan, a writer who was also an actor who they set up for a romance with Rachel, a poor romance. And that red swan that Mac had had sent to the house! Rachel, Amanda and Matthew were all adrift. Rachel went up northh hunting for the meaning of that red swan.

Did anyone ever figure out what the hell the red swan was? I can't remember. I just remember people looking at it and talking about it. I feel for the writers though. His death was nothing they could prepare for and his character had become the heart of the show, the dad everyone wants. I did end up liking Rachel with Carl after a bit. It was just a tad of stretch these two would end up together, but the chemistry between the actors is what made it work. You could tell they really enjoyed working together. Now, when a mid-50s Rachel became pregnant with TWINS while she had a TUMOR growing in her womb AND she takes a fall on an island and has to have a C-SECTION with no anesthesia on top of a coffee table during a HURRICANE...it just felt like the writers were drunk or high or both..."Let's make this even CRAZIER by..."

Lot of talk of recasts on Santa Barbara in this thread. Another recast - besides Eileen Davidson - that I thought just never worked was Wanda DeJesus as Santana. I get life played her a cruel hand a lot, but DeJesus played Santana much too brittle, hard, and cold, IMO. Yes, she wasn't as weepy and clingy as Gina Gallego's version, but DeJesus' version seemed to go too far in the opposite direction. And her "romance" with C.C. I never bought, especially since he had involvement in the whole Brandon mess. (I recall reading here or elsewhere that Jed Allan didn't get along too well with her, too.)

I always felt like Santana should have been a consistent character on the show...the show's Latina heroine...but they never quite found the actress I think.

But really, you never know what you have. Even Anne Heche was super green when she first started. Looking at her in 1991, you have a 21 year old tour de force who is really carrying this show. There was no indication that she would turn into that when she first started. Not that she was bad when she started, but by the time she left she was really something special.

Anne Heche grew into an AMAZING actress. She did a great job with both Vicky and Marley, more so than the other actresses IMO. She truly played two very distinct characters.

  17. Does anyone know what was the highest rating Loving ever achieved?

I was sort of disappointed when I read Agnes Nixon's autobiography. She talks loads about AMC and OLTL but not one word about Loving. It would have been interesting to get her take on why that show never took off like her other creations and the behind the scenes that may have played a part.

EON beginning to circle the drain. Losing more and more affiliates couldn't have helped. Also, seeing the healthy distance between RH and LOV's ratings makes me understand why the former's fans have been so ticked about the upcoming timeslot switch for 35+ years.

Of all the shows that could be rebooted, I think EON would be an interesting candidate because of the nature of the show's stories...a dark, moody drama

What are we thinking of Traci and Poppa Rosales hooking up?

That's at least 2 ideas that were mentioned by posters way before they popped up on air...Josh must be running low on inspiration.

A pity the actor playing Adrian is so far fairly bland.

Traci deserves a good story finally after having the last one killed off by her acting partner (as I suspect).

Wait, hon, tell me it's not true! You hate Julie and always have? I've had a serious crush on Julie since I was a teenager!

Now, Stella and that pit, that was a tale to be told!

Julie is one of those characters, who despite some OTT acting, makes DAYS feel like DAYS for me when I see her. Soaps need that connection to their history...it even makes the stories richer for new viewers.

Another one for me is Lucas. I think he did a great job recently with Kate's almost death, and I always enjoy the character. I don't understand why he's not full-time on contract. He's sort of the missing puzzle piece that helps round out the Hortons and make them feel like a "real family" since he's Jennifer's brother. Bring him back full-time with a grown up Allie (we need more youth character since almost all that's left is Killer Ben and Ciara). I also think that this, story-wise, would be a great time for Theo's return since to me he and Ciara will always be endgame...it was set up when the characters were "children."

Julie telling Maggie to take her place with Doug was just weird.

That was truly weird. I could buy her asking to keep an eye on Doug BUT marry him???

After not watching for months, I only recently started catching an episode here and there. There's still a lot I don't like, but the show is becoming more watchable finally. It feels like things are actually happening.

Even with all her over the top acting, I'm enjoying the Julie storyline and how many people it involves. I wish Lucas were on full-time. He's one of those vets that makes me feel like I'm watching DAYS maybe because I started back in the early 90s. The Hortons need a strong male role model in the family, too. Why haven't they brought on Allie? The young set just now consists of brain dead Ciara and serial killer Ben for the most part.

I'm not sure where Kristen's nutty plan is going, but I'll watch to see.

Sarah is MUCH more tolerable and interesting paired with Xander.

I'm curious to see how the time jump works...and IF it works. It could be a great way to "reset" the show and mix things up...IF it works.
