  1. That's it, really.

Even here, I wouldn't say so much that Lorie had the power, as much as there was a mutual respect. Kay Alden and Jack Smith would not write Victor as having any genuine respect for women, and the narrative backed that up.

I greatly enjoyed that Victor/Lorie scene because it was two adults who flirted and tested each other a little, but understood the reality. There was nothing like what we'd get today, where Victor would call Lorie a two-timing slut and fans would cheer him on.

Victoria Mallory looked stunning here and she does play Leslie with so much dignity and class. I can understand why Bill Bell cut Leslie once JLB left, because she seems to work best with Lorie and not as much on her own, but she truly is a very special lady.

The styling was just great here - I think the show had good styling overall until things went a little nuts in the mid-late '80s, but then, that happened everywhere.

I feel like Lorie was still such a vibrant character at this point and JLB seemed to have found a certain groove in her performances. I guess she left when she was on top, but I miss what never was.

    Totally agree.

Power was the wrong word, she seemed like his equal not some sad woman pinning away for him. It was mature and respectful.

Yes the styling on most shows in the late 70's and early to mid eighties was great. A good mixture of understated class, the 70's had this slight nod to 40's style with a modern twist which I like and seemed to disappear around 1984. Even Dynasty had better styling in its first couple of years.

JLB wanted to leave Y&R since 79/80, she stayed longer than she intended and I don't think anything was going to keep her from leaving. She really was a main focal point and it must have been exhausting once the show went to an hour. Even during her pregnancy in 1980 she was still featured quite a bit.

I do wonder if Bell wanted to keep Leslie/Victoria. She was on until Dec 1982 (I think possibly her last air date was the very last week of the year) and had that story with Robert after JLB left, though she seemed totally isolated to that story, he seem to make no real effort to integrate her into the rest of the evolving show. Was Bell testing the waters or was Victoria on contract until Dec and he had to write something for her and needed some way to use Robert as well. Hard to tell. Greg, Lucas, Lorie and Chris were all off by Aug/Sep why did he keep Leslie on a few months longer?

  2. I am curious about The Doctors going from self-contained stories to the more serialised format. Wiki states When it first aired in 1963 as an anthology, it did so for a trial run with self-contained episodes about medical emergencies. When the show was brought back in 1964, the show finally adopted a serial form of storytelling.

This seems to suggest the show was off air for a period of time. Anyone know if this is the case and how long it was off air?

  3. Thanks Alphanguy74 thanks so much for the Lorie clips. I can see why JLB was so important to the show, she really had a presence and great chemistry with the cast. Victoria Mallory's performances have so much quiet dignity and strength when it is needed.

KT Stevens was so evil as Vanessa. I can't imagine watching Vanessa and Lorie go at it for 5 + years and then have it end that way. Watching Vanessa think about destroying Lorie was amazing, her hatred for Lorie was so intense.

JLB sometimes went OTT, I think it worked well in the first clip with Stuart (btw those scenes were from around Nov 76) but I found it too much in the scenes with Leslie when Lorie discovers her sister is carrying her husbands baby.

JLB's 2002 return always annoyed me. I hadn't seen any of her Lorie but something felt off, now I see what it is. They completely stripped the character of her dignity to prop Victor. You can see Lorie enjoyed Victor's company but she also threw him under a bus to help the man she always truly loved, Lance Prentiss. Victor was a means to an end. The balance of power was always with Lorie, even in 1984 for the short scenes she had with him.

  4. I think the first was when Snapper was on trial for his father's mercy killing.

Snapper didn't technically go on trial. The charges were dropped due to lack of evidence, but the hospital board had a hearing to determine if Snapper could keep his job. They wanted him to admit to wrong doing, Greg and Snapper presented a case for euthanasia instead. The board dismissed him from the hospital, that's when he opened his own clinic.

Hmmm. Did Bill Foster Sr. pass away before or after Jennifer Brooks?

Bill died Nov 76 and Jennifer Sep 77.

  5. Oh no. I lost my password and haven't been able to get on the boards for weeks, lol, thanks to Toups for solving that dilema. I totally missed all the episodes (except the one on YT) If they come back up any chance I could get in on it, haha. Really wanna see this show.

I love the more modern production compared to other soaps of the time. The music and writing is so sophisticated. Elizabeth Hubbard looks amazing, like a movie star of the day, she has a sophisticated air to her. I really like the performances too. NBC had three great soaps on in the 60's and 70's. What an amazing line up. Hopefully one day we can see all three from that era.

As far as the episodes being in colour. I looked up a few newspaper articles, apparently the show went colour around Oct 1966. Makes sense as Days started in colour in Nov 1965 and Another World went colour I think Jun 1966. NBC News went all colour in 1966 too.

  6. Thanks for all that info! smile.png I know Stafford's first airdate was either 10/17/94 or 10/18/94 and her first return back was 7/13/00 I believe. When did Sandra depart? was it summer 99 or earlier then that.

Sandra's last air date as Phyllis was in Feb 1999. Either Fri Feb 19th or Mon Feb 22nd. Not sure exactly. I think she started Mar 21st 1997 or thereabouts.

  7. From what I know Beth's runs where

    Jun 82 - Jun 87

    Nov 87 - Dec 89

Sep 90 - Aug 92 (she may have been on recurring for parts of this)

After this she was on 1993,1994,1996,1999 for just brief runs. At most a month, although I am a bit hazy with 1999, when/if she was on and how long. The 90's is a bit confusing since Traci was on and off so much so I may have missed something. After 1999 I stopped watching on a regular basis, so am not sure when she returned after that.

  8. One thing that I read that surprised me was Deborah Adair stepped back into the role of Jill in 1987 prior to Jess taking over the role. I must have missed those episodes since I remember when Jess first appeared.

Deborah said in an interview she did it as a favor to Bill Bell and at that point didn't want to come back to daytime. She said she had fun and made some new friends.

    Does anyone remember this ?

Deborah came in around Oct 1986, Brenda was out sick (or re-negotiating) Deborah was on a few days and Brenda returned until June 1987 when Jess took over.

Deborah was on when Jill was trying to get Jack re-employed at Jabot. At least I think that was the story. Jill had to get as much support from the Jabot board to have Jack re-instated, she reunited Jack and John and hoped this would make Jack get on board with her ideas for a men's line at Jabot.

  9. Jerry Lacy was also on Y&R? Is there a soap he WASN'T on back in those days? wink.png

Funny you should mention him. I just read a Tune in Tomorrow article about his arrival on Y&R. The character was originally to be named Rick, but Jerry asked they change it as he had played Rick on Love of Life.

  10. Leslie did get that story where she developed amnesia and hooked up with Jonas (Jerry Lacey). But I don't think it really took off and once Jonas and Leslie returned to Genoa City, the whole thing fizzled.

Leslie (and Victoria) just wasn't strong enough to sustain interest out of Lorie/Lance /Lucas.

Yeah but even when Leslie got story when VM was in the role it always seemed to come back to how is this going to affect Lori. Once Lucas found Leslie all the focus was on Lori and how this was going to ruin her life once Leslie came back and regained her memory. Should Lori help her sister regain her memory, will she lose Brooks. Even though JLB was planning to leave around 1980 and was pregnant with her second child, she was still a big focus of the show and that storyline eventually shifted towards her.

  11. I don't know for sure, those watching at the time might know. It does seem as if Bell lost some interest in Leslie once Janice Lynde left. The focus definitely seemed to shift to JLB's Lori. I read an interview with Victoria Mallory where she stated she was backburner for her first six months on the show, once the reveal of her pregnancy and miscarriage to Brad happened.

Even when she had story in the late 70's it seemed to focus more on how Leslie's actions would affect Lori's life.

  12. Do we know about Y&R's current taping schedule?

Are they shooting multiple episodes or different parts to allow the show to go dark for periods of time and save money?

Whatever the case I'm sure there is way less time for rehearsals, retaping and notes from the director. Thus the lackluster performances we often see.

I thought they weren't doing that, but it was possibly going to happen (or has) I thought they were still a month ahead. Not sure though.

  13. Believe me, I always invision the miracle of Kay Alden or Ed Scott (or both) to come back as Head Writer or EP......but all wishes can't come true.....

Plus whenever I watch any of the old episodes I share with you guys, I always question whether any of the younger or non veteran current actors would find the dedication that required them to be apart of the glamour which was Bill Bell's Y&R from the first couple of decades.....there's a reason why certain actors and actresses were cast in certain roles......do we have mostly still have pretty faces as we did in the past?........yes, but what we don't have is the uniqueness and proper technique I think some actors required to be a part of Bill's Y&R......Are any of these young folks ready to lead the next generation eventually?.....who is the future Jack,Jill, Nikki,Victor,Ashley etc.....Who are the Cassandra's, Sheila's David Kimble's etc...suppose to be of this generation?.....

I feel some could if given the guidance actors had back then. From everything I have heard from Bell's Y&R, Conboy or whoever the EP was at the time, was hands on with performance and story, so was Bell and that would filter to the actors. The directors back then were also responsible for performance and guidance of the actors, not just hired hands as they seem to be now.

JFP seems more interested in budget and look of the show and the directors seem to be just doing what they are told and not really directing so much. I could be wrong but that is the impression I get.

  14. Thanks for the articles. I have to say I never had a problem with Lauralee Bell. I was never a huge fan of Cricket. Mostly because I thought Danny was such a cheesefest of a character.

Seeing the Colonnade Room reminds me of Nikki's tantrum around Victor's birthday with Diane. Fun times. Is it still shown on the show?

  15. I also think 1973 - 1993 (not that I saw the 70's but I can tell it was good). 1994 through to Spring 1996 was good, but something was off in certain places, some of the focus was off, I can't quite explain it. Still like that period though and happy to re-watch.

By summer 1996 something was definitely off and didn't pick up until mid to late 1997 when Kay Alden became co-head writer. After Bell retired the show was stable but lacking a certain something, still watchable though until about 2003/2004. I gave up by 2005 and haven't watched a single episode since.

  16. The actor who played the slimy photographer who wanted to take pornographic pictures of Jill and Chris was Michael Gregory (later the first Rick Webber on General Hospital.)

Jill and Chris met in the outer office of the photography studio, and went into the interview together. Upon hearing that the photographer wanted to take nudie pictures of them, Chris announced that neither she nor Jill would be interested, and walked out, taking Jill with her. Jill went back in later, alone, however, and offered the photographer her services anyway, but he was just then getting off the phone with another model who had taken him up on his offer, so he rejected Jill's services.

I don't know who the actor named Sean Garrison is, exactly, but there was another John Abbott besides Brett Halsey in the early years of the show. I only remember seeing him once, however. Perhaps this was Sean Garrison, or maybe not, but it was a very temporary recast of the role of John.

Thanks for that info. 70's Y&R had a lot of short term characters who were played by some well known soap actors. I wish I could find more synopsis for 1973.

Ugh, so today my 2nd account, Restless Bold, was terminated. There were like two episodes on there that were public and they got them. I'll make another one soon. If any of my videos upthread no longer work and you didn't save them, let me know so I can upload them again later. What a pain.

Thanks so much for sharing everything again and again. Appreciate the effort. Why can't Sony/CBS or whoever it is just let us enjoy the show.

Also thanks YRFan23. I have been loving these uploads. I am quite surprised the episode of Nina shooting David featured so little of them, they were actually hardly in the episode at all. I guess the were on most of the week so there was a big build up.

  17. Thank you for that!

No worries, and the other one I remembered. Deborah Dalton who played Cassie Burns on Days in 1980 was also on Y&R. Apparently that was her first soap role and she played a runaway. Apart from Jodie in 1977 who was apparently played by Cynthia Eilbacher (April) and Kathy Bruder who was played by Cindy Fisher, I don't know any other runaway teens on the show. Maybe she played a role during the Rose DeVille/Chris Foster white slave story.

  18. I just remembered. In the recasts section I posted about Sean Garrison being listed as John Abbott in 1980 in a newspaper Q&A from January 1981. As far as I am aware Brett Halsey was the only John Abbott between 1980 - 1981. This could have been an error and Sean was never on the show, but I get the feeling if he was he may have played George Packard. He was born in 1937 which would have made him 43. Brett Halsey and Jerry Douglas were born in 1933 and 1932 respectively. So Sean, if he was on the show, would have been slightly too young to play John Abbott. Also SOD only ever mention Brett from the beginning of the character's start on the show to the end.

  19. I know there was a character named Brent, that Jill dated around October 1973. Also in 1973 a male photographer that wanted to take nude photos of Jill and Chris, that was sometime around Sep 1973. Maybe the actors listed played one of those characters. Not sure. Also I wasn't sure Frank's wife was ever on screen to be honest, though I have never found in depth synopsis from 1973.

  20. They had a small story with Joe when Julia was contemplating having a baby. She considered Joe, not sure how much screen time he got for that though.

I do wonder why they didn't bring him back for Jessica's AIDS story. He was her brother right? Might have been good, even just for her death.

  21. The casting of McGillan as Greg was a puzzlement.

Between his performance and lackluster writing, he made zilch impression which is a shame as Greg was a viable character and could have been worked into the new format. When John Silva came along, I thought that Greg could have been that character(apart from the flirtation with Jill). He could have been a sounding board for Jill and all purpose lawyer, with a smattering of romantic involvement. Not front burner but a link to the original concept.

All I remember of McGillan's Greg was his involvement with Jill when she tried to sell the Foster home and was involved with Andy.

Was he around when she started seeing John Abbott again while engaged to Andy?

Yeah, Howard was on from around Nov 1981 until Sep 1982, so he left just before Jill married John. I think he came on just after Jill sued Jack for sexual harassment.

  22. Yes, it was. He wrote for the show for a lot of the 90s and up to part of the 00s I think. Wasn't he one of those pushed out by LML?

Thanks for that. I also wonder what would have become of certain characters if JLB had stayed. She would have more than likely been front and centre which means MTS and Brenda Dickson might not have been as central.

  23. I don't know why they let Nick Benedict go either. Bill Bell wanted to hold on to Eric Braeden and redeem the character of Victor so viewers would warm up to him. So maybe he wanted to get rid of the Michael character and quickly forget that storyline ever happened. I remember an old interview where Bill Bell said he was fond of Meg and wrote her into a corner and didn't know what to do with her. He then asked her if she had considered writing since he saw her handy work at doing some rewrites onset when a scene wasn't going well. Viewers then started seeing her name in the writing credits and wrote in asking if they would see Julia again. Meg then pulled double duty recurring till the end of the 80's.

I didn't know they were wanting to keep Tom Ligon. I wonder where they would have taken Lucas if he had stayed on.

In 1982 shorty after Ashley and Traci's arrival, they introduced a character named Brian Forbes that worked in the Jabot lab. He and Ashley became a couple till early 1983 then he went to make a phone call and never came back. Bill Bell's writing was all over the place at that time and seemed he couldn't make up his mind what to do with the over bloated cast.

Ashley is an interesting one with her screen partners. Brian as you said disappeared about the time Eric Garrison turned up in 1983, then Ashley wasn't sure about her relationship with Eric, In 1984 she went to Italy and met Frenchman Marc Megeron and eventually paired up with him a few months later, which didn't last long as the whole Ashley/Victor romance began in 1985.

I am also curious about James Houghton being on the writing staff, I have seen his name a few times on credits, I assume it is the same actor who played Greg initially.
