  1. Here is November, should have December by tomorrow.

    1973

    November

Paul is delighted that he and Ann have resumed their marital relationship, but she points out they’ll have to really try to make it work. When Nick pushes her to leave and plan a future with him she evades the issue and painfully sks Ruth Martin if one woman can love two men equally. Nick’s wife Kitty is planning a party for Phil’s return and is looking for a bigger house, unaware that Nick is definitely planning to leave her as her psychiatrist tells him it makes no difference in Kitty’s analysis if he’s with her or not. Tara is devastated to learn Phillip is alive and coming home and, guilt ridden, she reacts in apparent shock. Her husband Chuck reminds her that baby Phillip is legally and morally his child and he loves him, that she must not tell Phil the baby is really his. When Chuck’s grandmother Phoebe begins to set up a trust fund for her great-grandson, Tara reacts violently and feels she must see Phil before she can decide what to do.

Phil arrives back from Vietnam with a tropical fever and is held at the base hospital. He questions his mother Ruth about why Tara isn’t there until Ruth finally explains that Tara is married to Chuck and is very happy. Heartbroken she lets Phil tell her how he and Tara married themselves the night before he was sent out to Vietnam and that he always felt the vows were binding, that she’s his wife. Unable to let him know she already knew this, Ruth explains Chuck and Tara’s relationship grew out of their mutual grief at his reported death. Unable to accept this, Phil has Nick drive him into town and he visits Tara. She explains, as Ruth did, she believed him dead. He’s stunned to find she has a baby named after him and he leaves only after kissing her and telling her he feels she’s still his wife. He can’t accept this has happened to them. Phil asks her not to tell Chuck he was there but he forgets his hat and when Chuck finds it, he’s hurt and angry that Tara hadn’t told him. She still can’t decide whether to tell Phil about the baby or not.

Erica begins her testimony at Jeff’s trial. She tries to imply that Jeff was jealous of Jason, but Paul forces her to admit Jeff wanted desperately to divorce her so he could marry Mary Kennicott. But D.A Hamilton learns about the money Joe was paying Erica and he implies that they were paying her to change her testimony. The damage is done, and it is doubtful if anyone believes Erica's testimony now. Mary, terrified for Jeff, asks him to suggest Paul bring in another lawyer, a co-counsel. Paul is hurt by this but agrees to do it. Paul opens the case for the defense, saying Jeff is innocent because the motive of jealousy simply did not exist. Mona testifies that Jeff wanted to rid his life of Erica, but Hamilton makes it seem as if Mona is lying so Jeff can be freed and return to Erica. Mona also testifies that Jason dumped Erica and threw her out the night he died, which contradicts Erica’s statement that they were going to marry. Pressed about the night of the murder, Mona suddenly has memory flashbacks of Jason and she collapses repeatedly on the stand.

Realizing she knows something so upsetting she has blocked it out of her memory, she agrees to examination under sodium pentathol and the trial principals meet in Dr. Polk’s office. Under the drug Mona recalls she went to Jason’s suite that night. He crudely insulted her and told her Erica was a tramp and a witch. Still yelling insults, he pushed Margo’s gun into Mona’s hand telling her to return it to Margo. Afraid of guns Mona backed off, but Jason persisted and she fell and the gun went off, killing him. She ran out in shock and hysteria and blocked the whole episode from her mind. Hamilton has to ask for a mistrial and charges against Jeff will be dropped.

    October

Jeff’s trial begins. D.A Hamilton’s opening statement accuses Jeff of killing Jason in a jealous rage as Erica was supposedly going to marry Jason. The D.A forces Dr. Frank Grant and Mary Kennicott to testify to Jeff’s love for Erica by citing things that happened long ago. Paul manages to clarify the timeline of events and includes information about Erica’s abortion that she had without Jeff’s knowledge. Hamilton tries to imply that Mary and Jeff’s relationship is an illicit romance on the rebound, but Paul brings out the fact that Mary and Jeff plan to marry as soon as he’s free. Paul shows Margo Flax had opportunity to kill Jason and better motive. She’s furious he is implicating her. Erica is now terrified of testifying. She begins to drink and take tranquilizers and eventually collapses and is rushed to hospital. A waitress from the Inn testifies that Jeff wasn’t drinking that night, but Margo was there and she was drunk. Margo is incensed by Paul and tells Ann she is resigning her job with the boutique. Lt. Riselle introduces the Tempo magazine article layout depicting Jeff and Erica as a happily married couple.

Paul needs Erica’s testimony now more than ever to reveal that Jeff only agreed to the layout on the condition that Erica would sign the divorce papers. Since she is hospitalized, a postponement is ordered. Erica’s tests show nothing is wrong with her, but terrified of going to court she insists she is faint and dizzy so she can remain in the hospital. Realizing she is malingering, Joe implies the next step will be exploratory brain surgery, after which Erica miraculously recovers. She immediately announces her health is secondary and she must help Jeff. Nick continues to press Ann to divorce Paul and re-marry him. Ann and Paul decide to try again to make their marriage work and they reconcile. Kitty hopes Nick gives up on Ann and turn to her. Nick, however, is determined to leave Kitty as soon as Dr. Polk, her psychiatrist says she is well enough to handle it. Tara is persuaded by Chuck to take a vacation as the trial of her brother Jeff is becoming too much for her. Phil’s identity is verified in Saigon. Ruth and Joe are informed he is alive and what happened to him after his helicopter crashed in Vietnam almost a year ago.

Phil is flown to the Philippines and calls Ruth who is overjoyed to hear his voice but painfully tries to avoid his questions about Tara. Ruth tells Joe she accidentally discovered the truth about Phil and Tara marrying before he left, though the marriage wasn’t legal. She also knows that Tara and Chuck’s baby is really Phil and Tara’s. Ruth visits Jeff in jail who confirms the story and points out morally and legally baby Phillip is Chuck’s son and Tara has moved on. Ruth and Joe agree not to mention they know about the “marriage” and paternity to Chuck or Tara and leave it to them to decide what to do. Chuck is stunned to learn Phil is alive. His world seems to come apart as he realizes that while Tara now loves him, it is a different kind of love than the overwhelming love she and Phil shared. He can contend with the memories she has of Phil. But he becomes worried about what Phil, alive, will do to his marriage. Chuck now has to go home and tell Tara that Phil is alive.

  3. Hey Guys. I came upon some daytime tv newsletters from Sep - Dec 1973. I am trying my best to add all of them but am a little behind. Here is September 1973 and I hope to have the rest within the day.

    1973

    September

Nick Davis is badly shaken when he accidentally sees his ex-wife Ann kissing her husband Paul Martin. He’s still trying to convince Ann to leave Paul and come back to him. Paul, meanwhile, tells Ann she must soon decide if she wants to try to save their marriage. Nick’s wife Kitty tells Ann she, Kitty, needs Nick and will do anything to keep him. She reminds Ann how badly Paul would be hurt if Ann left him. Kitty continues to fight for her marriage despite Nick’s insistence they have no marriage. Kitty continually tells Nick that Ann will never leave Paul. Police Lt. Riselle refuses to believe Margo Flax, and not Dr. Jeff Martin, took her gun to Jason Maxwell’s the night of Jason’s murder. Erica, learning about the gun, tells everyone Margo must have killed Jason. Erica, Jeff’s estranged wife, agrees to testify to correct the mistaken impression she gave the police when she implied Jeff still loved her and wanted a reconciliation. But only if Jeff’s family giver her money for expenses while she is in Pine Valley. Jeff’s father Joe is furious, feeling it is extortion, since Jeff was indicted for the murder of Erica’s supposed fiancée Jason, only because of Erica’s distorted story to the police seem to give Jeff a motive. Erica coolly settles for one hundred dollars a week to stay and testify.

Mary Kennicott, Jeff’s fiancée, begs Paul, Jeff’s lawyer, to arrange for her and Jeff to marry as soon as his divorce is final, despite his being in jail awaiting trial. Paul makes her see the prosecution would imply she married him quickly to have immunity from testifying and this could hurt Jeff’s case. Erica admits to herself she is frightened of testifying, as she still doesn’t remember where she was the hours after Jason broke up with her and threw her out, the hours during which he was murdered. She sounds out Kitty about her psychiatrist and books an appointment under an assumed name, but then cancels it fearing the Martins would find out. Nick tells Paul of Erica’s interest in Dr. Polk, suggesting Erica may fear she killed Jason. Nick and Joe both feel Erica, who has a violent temper, could have killed Jason then blocked it out of her mind. Erica is furious when her mother, Mona, learns about the money from Joe and calls it blackmail.

Tara Tyler realizes she is finally happy again. Her love for Phillip Brent is now a wonderful memory of the glory of first love and she now has a different, gentle, more mature love for her husband Chuck and they plan to have another child. Phillip was however pulled from a river in Vietnam by a young Vietnamese boy named Binh, who lost both his legs in the war. For nearly a year, Binh and his sister Lan, cared for the delirious Phillip who has now begun to recover. Binh brings him in his boat to a small hospital and Dr. Le Dho, the American educated doctor, assures Phil he’ll make it, but it will be a while before he’s well enough to travel even to Saigon. He’ll try to get word through to Phil’s family. Phill tells Dr. Dho he wants to tell them himself. His wife Tara has been waiting too long already and he only dreams of reuniting with her. Phil feels deeply indebted to Binh, when Dr. Dho tells him about the Committee of Responsibility, which takes casualties of war like Binh to the U.S and rehabilitates them with surgery and artificial limbs, Phil promises he will make sure people at home know all about it when he returns. As Phil begins to recover and think of home, Ruth Brent Martin, Phil’s adoptive mother, Nick Davis, his natural father, and Erica, all dream Phil is alive and are disturbed by this. Tara is upset by dreams that a man she can’t see is calling to her. The voice is always so real and afterward her mind is full of thoughts of Phil.

    ------------------

According to Daytime TV Nick Benedict assumed the role of Phil Brent September 5 1973. So I am assuming this synopsis isn't in order of what actually happened week to week.

  4. This is fascinating to read. I had no idea Sally had given up a child. It sounds like they had more story planned for Sally - did the actress just suddenly leave?

I never knew exactly how Jill started working for Katharine.

I also never knew someone tried to rape Leslie in the mental institution. Didn't someone say this sequence was very ugly and basically the stereotypes of asylums? I think one of the soap magazines praised Janice Lynde's work as some of the best of the year.

Sally had a baby with her high school boyfriend Frank Martin, he turned up around summer 1973 when Sally and Snapper were on a break. He had married but his wife couldn't have children, so he tracked Sally down in the hopes she could help him find their daughter and he could raise her with his new wife. Not sure of all the details. But they did find her, she was living with a nurse named Jane Wilcox who was engaged to a man who didn't want the little girl, Jane dumped her fiancee and Frank helped Jane until they eventually ended up marrying. I think Sally may have had a romance with Frank as well which resulted in him divorcing his then wife (who I believe never showed up in GC).

Don't know the complete accuracy of this. I do have a yearly synopsis from 1973 that I pieced together from hundreds of sources on the net and in books and magazines from that era, I can post it, but I have no idea how accurate it is.

The almost rape in the asylum may have been by a woman, if not I am sure Leslie was hit on by a woman in the asylum.

  5. Thanks a lot ! It's so fascinating to read early Y&R summaries. I have so issues I posted here as you mentioned but not as much as you: which issues do you have?

I don't have that many. Sep - Dec 1973 which is all soaps. I started typing all up for one thread, but it was taking too long, so I have separated into each shows thread instead.

I also have Jan and Feb 1974 but only one page per month, it does have other shows, but not all complete summaries. I will post those as well. I do have 44 issues of SOD from the 70's and almost all from 1980 - 1996. That is quite an undertaking, but hopefully will get these together at some point.

  6. Hey guys, I found Jan and Feb 1974 at a garage sale, it was just two pages with Y&R, it does have parts from other soaps, LOL, SFT and ATWT. I will put those up with the 1973 synopsis in those sections even though they aren't all complete. Enjoy. Still working on AMC from 1973, but thought I would share this first. This was the first recaps Bryna had for Y&R.

    1974

    January

Greg tried to avoid going to Snapper and Chris’ wedding as he was still in love with Chris. But Chris appeals to Greg, who finally agrees to be Snapper’s best man, while Snapper refuses all financial help from Stuart. On their wedding night, Chris has memories of the rape and can’t go through with making love, Snapper understands and is willing to give her all the time she needs, Chris, though, feels better in the morning and the pair make love. Jill has established rapport with Mrs Chancellor, whose husbands’ indifference causes her to live her life on the edge of boredom and despair. While at the beauty salon, Kay becomes sick and Jill rushes her home so she can be looked after by her housekeeper. Jill is an awe of the luxury in which Kay Chancellor lives. She learns that her husband Phillip owns the factory where her mom works. Ironically at that same moment, Liz looses her job. Greg is entranced by a woman trying to resolve a will probate issue. She is the mysterious Miss Sherman and she doesn’t leave any contact information. Chris and Snapper return from their honeymoon, radiant and happy and ready to start their new life together. Lorie, knowing how Leslie feels about Brad, decides to get closer to him. Having a degree in journalism she interviews for a job at her father’s newspaper. Stuart is wary of Lorie’s motives, as she had never shown an interest in her father’s business before and he knows how jealous Lorie has always been of Leslie.

Despite his concerns, Stuart gives Lorie a job. When Lorie meets Brad, she is stunned when Brad tells her she is self centred and shallow for taking so long to show an interest in Stuart’s business. Lorie tells Leslie that Brad is rude and insensitive, though she gives lip service encouragement to Leslie about pursuing Brad. When Brad calls Leslie, Lorie intercepts the call and tells Leslie it was a wrong number. When Brad and Lorie next meet, he tells her he thinks she is jealous of Leslie and that her plans to write a book are her way of toping her sister. Lorie is determined though to ruin Leslie’s happiness, knowing Leslie has just returned from Chicago, Lorie gives Brad a sob story and convinces him to take her out for dinner, making sure that Brad won’t be able to see Leslie. Jennifer flies to Chicago unaware Leslie has returned, she visits Bruce Henderson and they go to lunch. Bruce tries to convince Jennifer to stay longer as she did last summer.

    February

Snapper takes a second job, he refuses to allow Chris to work and won’t take the money that Stuart has offered the couple as a wedding present. Sally tries to make Snapper see how much she needed this baby after giving up her other child, she tries to get Snapper involved, but he reminds her that baby is now Pierre’s, not his. Sally begins to have severe pain and Snapper rushes her to the hospital, her ObGyn manages to save the baby and delay labour. Marianne begins to suspect that Sally was pregnant before she married Pierre and that the baby is another man’s. She confronts Pierre who tries to deny it, but finally admits the truth.

Marianne tells Pierre that Snapper must know the truth; Pierre is suspicious of his sister’s motives, and worried that she might say something, though he sees Snapper’s detachment and cool medical manner and is relieved, feeling he won’t make any trouble. Liz tries to conceal the fact that she has lost her job and takes some other work to make money. When Greg and Snapper learn the truth, they appeal to Phillip Chancellor to give their mother her job back. Jill asks Kay to do the same. Shortly after, Liz gets her job back. Jill thanks Kay, who admits she had nothing to do with it. When Jill finds out that Kay has fired her personal assistant, she offers to become her paid companion. Kay finds the idea laughable, but gives her the job.

Jill envies Kay her possessions and social position, not realising the serious problems she has. Kay is lonely, her husband Phillip is turning away from her more and more, due to excessive drinking and smoking. Jill then meets Phillip and thanks him for reinstating her mother at the factory, Phillip is touched by Jill’s family loyalty, and admires the same quality in her brothers’. Greg’s client and infatuation, Miss Sherman, turns out to be Gwen, the call girl Jill met at the salon. Gwen tells Jill that she is no longer on the place at the edge of town. She has her own place for meeting her male clientele, and it’s much more interesting.

Jennifer and Leslie are back in Chicago. Jennifer meets up with Bruce once again, he tells her he has never stopped loving her, but Jennifer isn’t ready for such overtures and changes the subject. Lorie finds the newswire that Brad hid the year before, about his supposed death. She flies to Chicago to see Leslie perform, while there she tracks down Barbara Anderson who tells more than she should about her life with Brad. Lorie feels the information will come in handy for driving a bigger wedge between Brad and Leslie. Leslie takes to the stage, with Brad’s words of encouragement in her mind, Leslie’s concert is a personal and professional triumph.

These months were orignally posted by French Fan. Thought I might re-post to go with Jan and Feb

    March

Sally told Pierre she agreed they should sell the restaurant and move to Paris. She added Snapper did not know about the child. However, Sally and Pierre were robbed and Pierre struggled with him when he tried to take Sally hostage. Pierre was injured and at hospital, did not respond to the neurological tests Brad gave him. He suddenly died. Marianne Meulot, Pierre’s sister arrived from France and vowed over Pierre’s body that Sally would pay. She told Sally she had no right to the restaurant and tried to throw her out. Stuart was upset to see Snapper comforing Sally and told Jen he did not trust Snapper. Marianne was furious when Pierre’s will indicated Sally was the sole heir of the restaurant and made an appointment to see Stuart.

Jill was ecstatic over her new job but realized Kay had a drinking problem. When Kay’s husband, Phillip Chancellor begged Kay to stop drinking, she refused. Jill was discouraged at Kay’s lack of response to their efforts.

Gwen Sherman, Greg’s mystery client, told him all she wanted from her aunt’s estate was money. She turned down Greg’s date invitations because he did not know dating men was her profession.

Lorie was using her book manuscript to take Brad away from Leslie. When Leslie triumphaly returned from her piano debut, Lorie had prearranged a date with Brad which hurt Leslie to the core. Lorie told Brad that Leslie felt a muscian could not divide herself between a husband and a career. When Leslie confronter her sister, she said Brad was helping her with her writing. At Brad’s suggestion, Leslie got him a ticket for her Detroit concert but Lorie managed to detour the ticket. Against his wished, Brad began thinking of the things Barbara never told him that drove him out of Chicago and of the operating room.

    April

Before leaving for Paris, Marianna told Stuart that Snapper is the father of the child Sally was carrying. Stuart confronted Snapper who refused to either deny or admit. When Sally learned what Marianne did, she went to Stuart and Jennifer explaining she got pregnant to trap Snapper but realizing how much he loved Chris, she married Pierre. She added she would be leaving Genoa City. However, Snapper learned of Sally’s suicide attempt by gas in her early months of pregnancy and he insisted she remained in town until the baby was born. Chris was angry at her father’s attitude about Snapper’s protectiveness of Sally but Stuart was furious to learn that Sally was staying in town.

Greg continued to press Gwen for a date and she explained she distrusted men as after her mother died her father informed her he was never married and took off. She tried to discourage Greg to get closer. He was confused when a man arrived at Gwen’s apartment ignoring she was a call girl.

Katherine told Jill about her strorybook first marriage to Gary Reynolds and her marriage after Gary’s death to Phillip Chancellor. Jill was impressed by Phillip ans he was protective of her realizing she was innocent about men. Jill managed to keep Katherine from driking all day and when Phillip arrived home he was encouraged. But when he was preparing to make love ti his wife, she took one dring and another and she passed out when Phillip returned from the shower.

Lorie hid the love letter and concert ticket Leslie sent to Brad and implied Leslie forgot. When Leslie called just before the concert to find out why Brad wasn’t in Detroit, Lorie answered and made it celar Brad was interested in her, Lorie. Leslie was in shock and so odvercome that she had to be led off the stage. She went to New York and wantered Central Park in confusion. Her handbag was stolen and she spent the night in the rain calling for help. A policeman found her but she was incoherent and taken to Manhattan’s Psychatric Hospital where she was diagnosed as a possible mani-depressive and put in an observation ward as Jane Doe as she had no ID. She was confused when a young orderly tried to make love to her. Meanwhile, Lorie was taking advantage of Leslie’s absence to get closer to Brad. She admitted she has finished her book and would probably be more successful than Leslie and she said she thought she was pregnant.

    July

Lorie ignored Chris’ hopes that she would use an assumed name on her soon to be published novel and put Stuart off when he asked to see the draft. She was shoked to hear Leslie had a nervous breakdown and tried to avoid Brad. Leslie blamed Lorie for her breakdown. Brad tried to talk to Leslie but she refused. Lorie’s publisher, Dave Larson, set up a centerfold magazine spread as promotion for her novel and she had to go to New York. She asked Brad to elope but he fit the pieces together and realized Leslie was waiting for him in Detroit. Lorie asked Leslie not to tell Brad the truth and leslie replied she would let Lorie do it. Jen ended up guessing Lorie mut have taken Leslie’s call but refused to believe it. Brad asked Lorie if she took Leslie’s call.

Kay, very depressed, slept with Jeff, the stable boy over Jill’s objection. She told Jill she had become like a daughter to her since her son Brock had not contacted her in years. Phillip spent more time with Jill and gave her a string of pearls and surprised her with a kiss. When she asked Phillip what he expected, he assured his intentions were honorable. After a dance, he told her he loved her. Jill re-doubled her effort to keep Kay sober but could not help wondering what could Phillip’s pledge of love could mean.

Snapper’s schedule as a full fledged doctor left him very little time off and Chris planned a special dinner for his first evening home. The mood was shattered when he learned she withdrew money from her parents to buy things she felts they needed. Sally went into labor, worried that her suicide attempt would affect the child. Snapper visited her to reassure her. Stuart and Jennifer felt Sally’s remaining after the baby’s birth was a threat to Chris’ happinesse particularly since she was herself pregnant. But Snapper refused to mention it to Sally until they knew the baby was all right. Liz stayed with Sally during her labor but felt guilty that she loved Sally as much as Chris. The baby boy was born but there were no news on its condition.

This was posted by French Fan as a scan of the original newsletter and may not replicate what was written verbatim, as I transcribed it myself.

    August

Jennifer and Stuart learn that Lori did indeed take the call that lead to Leslie’s breakdown. Stuart wonders what kind of woman Lori is and how she could be his child, this in turn makes Jennifer remember her affair with Bruce Henderson. When they confront Lori she shows little remorse, stating that they always favoured Leslie. They explain they love all their daughters equally, but Leslie’s shyness needed more direct attention. Lori accuses her parents of trying to take Brad’s love away from her. Lori then flies to New York with old flame and literary agent, Jed Andrews, to pose for the centrefold. While Lori is away, Brad finally sees Leslie and she tells him everything. Lori returns and Brad breaks off their engagement. He tells her all they ever had was a physical attraction, but at the core they are two fundamentally different people. The Maestro visits Leslie and tells her he wants her to join the St. Louis Ochestra for the September tour, but Leslie isn’t sure she will ever play piano again. Brad tries to boost her confidence, but she resists fearing she will fail. Brad accuses her of running away, Leslie counters by stating that he ran away from his life in Chicago, Brad explains he wasn’t running from his life in Chicago, but to a new life in Genoa City. Leslie finally tries to play the piano, but gives up after hitting one wrong note.

Sally names her son Charles Pierre, though she wanted to name him Bill. Snapper refuses to see his son until Liz pursuades him that it may help him come to terms with Chris’ pregnancy. While Snapper is visiting Sally and Chuckie, Peggy, doing a column for the newspaper, comes across the trio and puts two and two together. Snapper convinces her to keep quiet for Chris’ sake and assures her that he loves Chris. Peggy is dissapointed in Snapper who she respected. Sally decides to leave town with her son, though sad to leave her friends, she is excited to start a new life. Snapper can’t get his visit with Sally and their son out of his mind, he tells Chris that he is feeling better about her pregnancy, Chris is ecstatic to hear Snapper’s change of heart. Just before she is to leave, Chuckie develops pnuemonia. Sally calls Snapper for help and Chuckie is rushed to the hospital.

Jill tells Greg that Gwen is still a prostitute. Greg visits her and is shocked by her appearance, brought about by alcohol and pills. Greg tries to get through to her, but Gwen resists for fear that she will get close to Greg, who will then leave her. While Greg is there a client shows up and Gwen sends him away. Encouraged by this Greg tells her they can be happy together if she is willing to work for it. He kisses her and leaves her with some hope. Phillip asks Jill to spend the night and assures her he only wants her company. Kay asks Jill what she would do if she had the Chancellor wealth and is upset when she says she would help support her family.

Jill begins to feel overwhelmed by the differences between her mother and Kay. She tells Liz that she deserves so much more from life. Kay asks Phillip if he would re-marry if she died. He tells her he hadn’t thought about it, Kay believes him and realises that he has very different needs from most men. Kay then begs Phillip to make love to her, he agrees, but can’t go through with it. Kay begins to have frequent pain, but refuses to see a doctor, as she is too afraid of what they might find. Jill asks Snapper to examine Kay, who objects at first. Snapper believes she has an enlarged liver and recommends she have tests done, but Kay refuses. Seeing Jill with Kay, Snapper tried to pursuade Jill to leave, but Phillip begged Jill to stay. Jill has a nightmare that Kay pretends to be dead to trap Phillip and Jill into revealing their feelings for each other. Phillip and Jill try to pursuade Kay to go on a trip, Kay begins considering the idea, she later states that Phillip’s love and concern are all that keep her alive.

  7. Hey Jason. I found Jan and Feb 1974, but it is only one piece of paper from a garage sale, and it only has Y&R and parts of a couple other soaps. I will post the Jan/Feb 1974 Y&R stuff today in that section. I am working on getting more, hopefully be able to get the rest of it soon. Will definitely post as soon as I get it.

  8. This is incredible! Thank you for this. Reading this gives more details than just a basic story outline. For instance, I never knew how much Laura fought to end her marriage to Mickey and not bow down to what was expected of her. It's very surprising to see, and would never be allowed now.

Who was this Jim, and Burt? I think I've asked about Burt before and got an answer but I just wanted to know more about him.

Julie certainly had a busy story, especially since the show was just a half-hour at this time. It is fascinating to read, so complex, even on the page.

Poor Phyllis had such a terrible life.

Mary was about 25 years younger than Bill, wasn't she? Which Mary was this?

Thanks guys, glad you like it. I am working on AMC and that should be done within the day. Carl Jim was Jim Phillips, Linda's husband and father of her child. Though not sure if they were still married at this point.

  9. Hi Guys. I recently got my hands on some Daytime serial newsletters. I was going to do one thread with all shows, but it has taken a lot longer than I though to type up. So I thought I would add these to each individual thread, then maybe do one big thread with all shows. These synopsis are from 1973. AMC will be next, hopefully by tomorrow.

For those who don't know Mickey and Marty Hansen and Michael Harris are all the same person. The names were used interchangeably, usually depending on the scene.

    1973

    September

Julie, although dating Don, realises she is still in love with Doug. She is hurt by Doug’s angry words when she jokingly refers to their past affair, not realising that he is pre-occupied with Addie’s health. Meanwhile Julie is becoming aware that Bob’s attentions are more than casual, and, out of friendship to Phyllis, she tries to keep it light. She is deeply touched when Bob offers to pay for David’s military schooling as a memorial to Scott. But when Bob admits he hasn’t told Phyllis about the money Julie tells him she can’t accept the money under those terms. Bob says he will tell Phyllis and asks her to reconsider. Bob sees Laura professionally about his conflicting love for his wife and his attraction to a younger woman. Laura doesn’t mention that Julie told her that she feels Bob is growing too fond of her. Don is very jealous of all of Julie’s male admirers; Julie tells Don she needs a no strings attached relationship right now.

The Andersons are stunned to learn Mary has gone to South America. They now realise that she is trying to get over her feelings for Bill. Dr. Bailey, Addie’s obstetrician, finds her blood count is too high and orders a bone marrow test. He finds she has acute myelogenous advanced leukaemia and he tells Tom. Tom tells Addie and explains that chemotherapy can help control it, maybe for years. Addie insists Doug not be told, but Tom tells him, feeling he must know. Doug is shattered, but pretends he doesn’t know anything. Addie is upset to learn chemotherapy could harm the baby. Doug, realising what she’s thinking, stresses that she is the most important thing in his life. Michael is furious that Laura is considering selling Mickey’s law practice. He’s sure his father, missing now for months, will return and wants everything waiting for him.

Laura realises that Mickey’s clients need help now and is grateful when Jim offers to temporarily handle the practice. Since Jim’s ex-wife, and Mickey’s former mistress, Linda, disappeared with her child at the same time Mickey did, everyone assumes they’re together. Michael resents Jim’s offer, feeling it’s like saying Mickey is dead. Tom asks Laura to give up on Bill as it will be seven years before Mickey can be declared legally dead. Laura tells him she can’t do that. Bill, upset about Addie’s illness, tells Laura that life is short and they can’t wait any longer to be together. She replies that they are not the type to sneak nights together and says she will live with him openly. Michael tells Bill his mother could never be happy living with him while she is still married to Mickey. Bill begins to realise he can be a substitute father to Michael, if he gives up Laura. Laura tells Bill her need for him is as important as Michael’s image of her and they have to face reality.

Marty is becoming close to Maggie. Jay Livingston, an old friend of Maggies, is very protective of her and is suspicious of Marty. He confronts Marty, who assures him he would never do anything to hurt Maggie. Greg is extremely touchy about Eric’s novel, as he is sure everyone realises the chapter about the girl in the park is about his new wife Susan and that Eric is the father of her child. His embarrassment and hurt make him lash out at both Eric and Susan. Laura and Julie make him realise he may be driving Eric out of Salem and that it’s harder for Susan to hold her head up. Greg apologises to Eric, explaining his image of himself was shattered.

    October

Julie began to feel more alone and depressed and started relying on Bob’s friendship more and more, seeing him often. When Phyllis returned from visiting relatives, she invited Julie to spend a week with her and Bob at their place on the lake. Julie convinced herself she was reading too much into Bob’s affection and felt they were like parents to her. Phyllis does feel like Julie is another daughter to her, but Bob admits to himself his desire for Julie and realises these feelings and emotions are hurting his sexual relationship with Phyllis.

Eric tried to avoid seeing Ann so as to remain emotionally unattached and Susan begins to sense this.

Addie, still convinced Doug wants this baby more than anything, continued to refuse chemotherapy. Marty is amazed when Hank points out that Maggie is falling in love with him. Doug, knowing Addie is sick and is refusing treatment makes an effort to let her know he loves her. Doug is stunned when Addie tells him he has never said that to her before. His constant declaration of love convinces her that he does love her, but she still cannot bring herself to risk injuring the baby by starting treatment.

Realising he cannot make any commitment without knowing what ties exist from his past, Marty tells Maggie he is leaving. Maggie is heartbroken but accepts his need to leave. Before he goes, Maggie begins to feel pain in her legs. Marty makes her promise to see a doctor, as there may have been a change in her condition. While on his trip Marty begins to have chest pain and gets off the bus at the next stop, which is ironically, Salem. He is then mugged and ends up at the hospital with an injured hand from the attack.

Laura, out to dinner with Jim, realises that Alice resents her having any social life at all. Knowing there will be gossip no matter what they do, Laura and Bill decide to date openly. Laura tells Tom that she is dating Bill and if and when Mickey ever returns, she will ask him for a divorce.

    November

Marty registers at the hospital as Michael Harris and learns from the doctor on call that the scars on his leg and chest indicate bypass surgery. He assumes his amnesia could be a result of a post-operative stroke and agrees to see the heart specialist Dr. Tom Horton.

When Tom is delayed at the hospital, Marty decides to forget it and leaves town. Tom , bothered by the similarities in both name and EKG results between Michael Harris and his son Mickey, tries to find him at the motel address he left with the hospital. Learning he is gone, he checks the signature on the register and sees it isn’t Mickey’s handwriting, though he doesn’t know that Mickey signed with the badly injured hand from the mugging that brought him to the hospital in the first place, but Tom isn’t fully convinced and decides to keep investigating. Maggie sees her local doctor as she promised Marty. The doctor tells her the damage to her legs is still irreversible and un-correctable. Maggie is hurt by the news and Jay tries to give her hope that she will walk again and reminds her he loves her.

When Marty returns and tells Maggie he feels the farm is home and implies they have a future together, Maggie finally becomes content and happy again. Michael is less than pleased about Laura and Bill dating openly, that along with his guilt about his father’s disappearance has caused him to start skipping school and forge notes from Laura. Laura is shocked when she finds out what he has been doing, feeling she has failed at communicating with her son. Michael, now on school probation, tells Laura he is thinking about copping out on college, the way his father copped out on them, he feels Mickey hates him. Laura, unwilling to wait seven years to declare Mickey dead, considers filing for divorce on the grounds of desertion. Alice blames Laura’s dating Bill for his attitude and feels Laura should sit at home and wait for Mickey to return. Laura points out that Michael is the one who needs Mickey, not her.

Addie learns that Doug knows she is sick, and is convinced that his recent efforts to let her know how much he loves her were just his way of trying to convince her to have chemotherapy. Doug makes plans to build a house for Addie, who is still sure that he is playing the secrecy game to make her change her mind. Though her white blood cell count is high, she still refuses to have treatment until after the baby is born.

Phyllis and Bob hold a surprise birthday party for Julie and it becomes clear that Don and Burt are vying for her affections. Julie tells Don she is ready for marriage again, and Don admits he has healed from the death of is his wife and isn’t playing games anymore either. Don tells Julie the earrings, a gift from Bob and Phyllis, which Bob picked out, have real diamonds. Julie refuses to believe it, the Andersons are like parents to her. When Julie discovers they are real and cost $2,500, she confronts Bob and coldly asks if he is trying to buy her. Julie is stunned when Bob admits he is madly in love with her. He rages with jealousy when he sees her with another man and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Anguished, Julie tells Bob to think of Phyllis and their second honeymoon cruise he is planning to take her on. Distraught over Bob’s deceit, Julie feels she can never face Phyllis again. Bob asks Julie to think it all out very carefully, and let him know what she sees in her future.

    December

Marty and Maggie’s relationship deepens; Jay resents Marty’s presence, as he wants a future with Maggie. He plans to dig into Marty’s past as he refuses to talk about it. Tom can’t get Michael Harris out of his mind. He speculates that Mickey could have had a post-operative stroke that affected his memory. Laura learns she can divorce Mickey on the grounds of desertion one year from the day he disappeared. She and Bill plan for their future and he gives her a ring. Michael is suffering unnecessary guilt about his father’s disappearance and resents Laura writing Mickey off and moving on with Bill. He turns to his girlfriend Sharon for understanding and comfort and invites her to his empty house to study in the afternoons.

Alice feels Laura is wrong to divorce Mickey and uses Michael’s attitude to stop her, but Laura stands firm in her decision. Eric is torn between his growing feelings to connect to his daughter and his fear of hurting Greg’s marriage to Susan. Addie’s white blood cell count is up slightly and Tom tries to persuade her to start chemotherapy. He finally agrees to postpone the treatment until the baby is born. Addie wants her baby to be born perfect and also refuses inducement. Julie, still upset about Bob’s declaration of love, tries to avoid him and tells Phyllis about the honeymoon cruise. Phyllis is overjoyed and begins preparations for the trip.

Bob continues to press Julie, he insists he can’t be a husband to Phyllis any longer, and is planning to divorce her. Julie finally makes him realise she will never be the other woman in Phyllis’ life, and tells him to go home to his wife. Julie becomes more depressed when David writes to tell her he won’t be home for Christmas; he has been invited to Switzerland. Julie begins to feel better when Don invites her on a skiing holiday to Sun Valley, but Julie begins to realise she can’t get over Doug and what they once had together. She admits to Doug it is hard to see her mother carrying the child she wanted so much to give him.

Don and Julie’s skiing trip goes well, they stay in separate rooms. Don tells her he has an important question he wants to ask her soon. Bob, unable to go through with the honeymoon cruise, decides instead to cancel the trip. He tells Phyllis they’ve grown apart and lost each other along the way. Phyllis is devastated to learn she lost her husband without ever realising it was happening. Over her objections and pleas he moves out, telling her he needs time to work things out. She’s completely destroyed by this. On Laura’s professional advice Bob considers telling Phyllis there is another woman involved.

  10. Thanks. I wonder if in those six months Secret Storm and LOL went down in the ratings or it's just that others went up.

LIAMST, AMC and OLTL seem to be the ones that pushed one or both shows out of the top 10 during 1972, and they only seem to do that with a fairly strong rating, around high 7's or low 8's. So I am guessing LOL and SS possibly had steady ratings that would only keep their positions when those other shows weren't doing as well. Any time one of those shows had a surge LOL and SS would drop.

But hard to say how far a drop they had without seeing the bottom half of the ratings. My theory is based solely on the fact that LOL and SS only seem to reach around 9th or 10th position in 1972 with similar ratings each time.

  14. Hey Carl thanks for those articles. I love behind the scenes stuff, it is interesting, I was watching Bell's TV Legends interview and he didn't seem to like John Conboy at all at that point. But have to admit he did a great job with that show.

  15. @ Dr Neil Curtis - I have heard a lot of reasons for the Brooks sisters being phased out. As well as most of the characters of the first 10 years of the show. One was Bell was over the constant recasts of the characters. I think maybe he didn't feel the same desire to write for some of those characters once they had different actors in the role. Then when the show hit an hour in 1980 John McCook left, Brenda Dickson left, Jamie Lyn Bauer and David Hasselhoff wanted to leave and both eventually left two years later. I think Bell just moved on. He needed new characters anyway to pad the show out when it hit an hour.

Anyone know for sure or have more detail?

  16. Maybe, I've never heard about it, and never knew she could sing. She certainly never did on the show that I know of. I wonder if she actually recorded anything. Though I am sure if she did, Brenda would've snapped up the rights by now and would be distributing it through her website.

  17. Thanks Carl great read.

Oh yeah, Brenda actually released an L.P in the 70's. Never seen it though. Anyone know of it? I saw an article once while I was looking through some old papers online and it stated she was releasing an album.

  18. I'll never really understand the show's very weird issues with Tony DiMera (and they seem kind of personal, based on some of Thaao's comments).

It seems JER really wanted a catalyst to push the Kristen/John/Marlena triangle in a certain directon and Tony was it. Thaao didn't really like what was happening to his character, and true enough Tony was acting out of character, Thaao I think even stated he started playing Andre around the time of Aremid, he seem to really feel Tony was losing his dignity as a character which I think caused tension between Thaao and JER.

JER also didn't like Victor much and that is why he was pushed out, again in less than a dignified fashion. I seem to remember rumours that John Aniston asked his daughter to beg NBC to get him back on the show.

This is all from memory so maybe someone knows more in depth.

  19. I never understood why they broke up Jake and Alison in the season 5 finale. It seemed so unnecessary. Both actors were leaving and the departures seemed so rushed, like the break up was a last minute decision. They could have easily had them be happy and leave together to start a new life. Didn't make any sense.

Not to say I was that invested in them as a couple, but it seemed strange.

  20. I find this so bizarre that the ratings back at this time can plummet so dramatically so suddenly. DAYS in every single one of these is either #1 or #2 in the early-to-mid 70s, and yet this most recent posting, even RTPP is beating them. It's postively jarring, especially on a week where AW is #1.

Hmmm there are only 9 soaps listed instead of 10, I get the feeling Days may have placed 4th, as it did two weeks earlier. There is a big dip between ATWT and GL in ratings, I would guess Days was there and for whatever reason they were left off.
