Random thoughts -- I think Robyn Millan, Nancy Barrett, and Mary Carney (much theater) were all a great deal more experienced (in acting) than Nicolette Goulet. Mary Carney often had that theatrical line delivery that Kate had. I would have liked to have seen Nancy Barrett with John Gabriel (not necessarily on RH, but somewhere).

In an interview, when she was on another soap, Nicolette Goulet said she felt they were still writing for Kate's Mary for most of her run – she felt finally near the end they were writing for her.

As posted here a while ago and in the Almost Became thread – Kathryn Breech (Karen Wolek #1 on One Life To Live ) said she was offered the role of Faith but turned it down because she didn't want to be a recast. Then Nancy Barrett began as Faith.

That is a good question - everything in the press, at that time, sounded like she was to be a permanent Faith. She gave interviews during that brief time and never said she was a temp. Nancy also said had to audition for the role with Malcolm Groome and Justin Deas. DAY TV (December 1976) had to go back and add a postscript to an interview with her because by the time the interview was going to press – Nancy she was gone. The magazine asked her about her departure and she said to call her leaving “contractual differences. “ They used up some good double meaning dialogue in that episode in the following scene - with Faith and Pat going on about how Faith had changed a lot and was now different.

I've wondered what happened to Dennis Jay Higgins (Sam Crowell). After Ryan's Hope, he was in an off-Broadway play (Isadora Duncan Sleeps With The Russian Navy) in early 1977...not sure what became of him after that.

There is a new Catherine Hicks (Faith #3) interview about her 1980 TV performance as Marilyn Monroe. While others have asked Catherine about the role before (like Ty and Lisa did when she was on Soapnet's Soap Talk) it was great to hear someone interview her who had actually seen the movie recently and asks about certain scenes. http://blog.tvstoreonline.com/2014/03/catherine-hicks-looks-back-at-her-emmy.html As I mentioned some time ago, the former Cornell theater student that helped her when she first beginning her career was Jordan Clarke.

That Soapnet marathon was a wonderful way to celebrate the day. While some original viewers say they recall that Maeve singing Danny Boy was a yearly tradition, Maeve didn't sing the song on the first St. Patrick's day episode in 1976. She also didn't sing it in 1979 (Helen was only in the last 5 seconds of that episode -- the show ended with Maeve entering the bar after just arriving home from her trip from Ireland), 1985, and 1986 (on the old Soapnet message board we were told Ryan's Hope didn't have special SPD episodes those two years and that was why Soapnet didn't have them to play in their holiday marathons in 2000-2002.) In 2003, the SPD marathon was replaced with the airing of the first 5 episodes from 1975. That was the final special marathon of RH they ever had.

One thing I can think of is that, in early 1982, Jill had to deal with learning that she was Ed Coleridge's biological daughter.

The Frank (1 & 2) and Mary (1) relationship was not what it used to be by the time DHK Frank and Mary 2 & 3 & 4 were around. At that point they started building up the Frank and Jack relationship, so when Frank go over the Fenelli apartment, since Mary was rarely ever home, they stated having Frank talk over his problems with Jack more than Mary.

Frank/Jill/ Seneca During the early years of the show producer Robert Costello said that the show was about the Ryan family -- so any romantic relationships had to have a connection to the Ryans'. Maybe they could have made it a quadrangle with Mary Ryan/ Jack/ Jill/ Seneca instead of the Frank Ryan/Jill/Seneca triangle. I was always surprised when I watched the beginning again that Jill was a lonely woman while Mary, Nell, and Faith had plenty of male interest in them. (Mary had Jack, Bob, even a brief interest by Roger, Sam Crowell. Nell had Seneca, Ed, Roger. Faith had Bucky, Pat, Kenneth, and even when Faith was held in the basement, others had dialog about an unseen hospital delivery guy who had a crush on her.) Jill & Frank Nancy said that the writers and the audience wouldn’t let them be apart. She sounded fine about this in 1983-- even saying that she felt they owed the audience a big wedding (which the viewers never got, just a small hospital wedding which wasn't legal and an off-screen legal wedding where it was just the two of them). By the final time they reunited Jill and Frank -- Nancy said she was then backburned for over the last year of her run. This was why she decided to leave the show and give Hollywood a shot. Does anyone know how Nancy felt about Ken George Jones? During the 1976/1977 pregnancy story and keeping the baby's true paternity secret ( who Jill mistakenly believed was the father of her baby)-- this story bothered Nancy so much that she went to the writers to tell them that Jill wouldn't be deceiving Frank or Seneca. I always thought Nancy believed Jill was woman of integrity -- so I wondered how she felt about deceiving Frank during the KGJ affair. As bad as Michael Hawkins was as Frank, he did have his fans, though. There were letters printed in magazines where people wrote in upset that he was replaced. Andrew Robinson said one the reasons he finally agreed to take the role of Frank was that, after playing mainly “bad guys” for his career, he wanted to play a “good guy” for a change and he said the writers told him that the audience rooted for Frank.

Also in the 11/14 Elementary episode, Casey Biggs (Fenno, Ryan's Hope, 1989) had a small role as Alan Becker

Delia was also off screen from mid-fall 1983 (the firing of Ilene ) through mid-June 1984 (and the return of Delia played by Robin Mattson). Ryan's Hope messed with their own timeline by SORASing Johnno into a 19 year old with a baby and having dialog that said Frank was the same age!! when he (Frank) became a father. That would have made Delia – according to early RH years “facts” - - giving birth to Little John at 14 -- after having married Frank at age 9.
