ARTICLE: Procter & Gamble On Daytime Television Return: “We Invented the Soap Opera”
In a post on Instagram, Procter & Gamble is touting its return to the world of soaps, proclaiming, “We invented the soap opera,” as it prepares for the launch of “Beyond the Gates,” the first brand new soap opera set to debut on a broadcast network in more than 25 years, since the launch of “Passions” in 1999, and the first-ever one-hour Black-centric daytime drama series. “We’re returning to our soap opera roots to bring you ‘Beyond the Gates!’ the company says in the caption of its post, which is accompanied by a video message narrated by “Entertainment Tonight” co-host Kevin Frazier, and features a behind the scenes look at the taping of the new series. Additionally, the company updated its bio on Instagram to include the message, “We invented the soap opera.” In the clip, “Beyond the Gates” executive producer Kimberly Doebereiner gave attendees a soap opera history lesson in a speech during last fall’s start of production and ribbon cutting ceremony for the soap. Doebereiner is also Group Vice President, Future of Advertising and Head of P&G Studios at Procter & Gamble. “Back in 1937, we started by creating something called ‘Guiding Light’ on the radio and invented the soap opera,” said Doebereiner. “With the invention of TV in the 50s, we successfully moved ‘Guiding Light’ in 1952 to CBS.” Kevin Frazier CBS Media Ventures With footage from a behind the scenes taping playing, in the video Frazier asks the question, “Have you ever wondered why soap operas are called soap operas?” As an answer, he says, “Well, you can thank Procter & Gamble for that. The company known for its products including soap and detergents sponsored the first daytime dramas on radio and later TV, including one of the longest-running soaps ‘As The World Turns’ [sic*] that ran on CBS for 72 years.” Note*: It was “Guiding Light” (or “The Guiding Light” to long-time fans) that ran for 72 years between its radio and television broadcasts, having aired from January 1937-June 29, 1956 on radio and June 30, 1952-September 18, 2009 on television. “As The World Turns” aired exclusively on television and aired for just 54 years (April 2, 1956-September 17, 2010). Both soaps were created by the pioneer of the genre, the late, great Irna Phillips, who also created such iconic soaps as “Another World,” and “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” among numerous others, including the first-ever soap opera, “Painted Dreams” in 1930 (radio). “Now, P&G Studios is making its return to daytime after 15 years co-producing ‘Beyond the Gates’ with CBS and the NAACP,” Frazier continued. In its post, Procter & Gamble shared that there will be more “Beyond the Gates” content coming up as “Entertainment Tonight” takes viewers behind the scenes of the daytime drama series, learning more about P&G’s journey as soap opera pioneers. With “Beyond the Gates,” P&G is returning to its soap opera roots, teasing the show as another innovative way of connecting more people with their daily use products through entertaining and inclusive stories. Created by veteran soap opera writer Michele Val Jean, “Beyond the Gates” is developed and produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, led by Sheila Ducksworth, in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. The series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. Alongside Val Jean, who also serves as head writer, executive producer and showrunner, executive producers include Sheila Ducksworth, Julie Carruthers, Robert Guza Jr., Leon W. ARTICLE: ‘As The World Turns’ Alum Billy Magnussen To Topline Untitled Jonathan Glatzer Series
“As The World Turns” alum Billy Magnussen (ex-Casey Hughes), will topline the currently untitled Jonathan Glatzer Silicon Valley series for AMC and AMC+. Sarah Goldberg (“Barry”) was the first to be cast in the project. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the AMC Studios produced drama series is set inside the bubble of Silicon Valley, amid misguided corporate cultures, moony innovation labs and cutthroat private high schools. It is centered around a rift between a self-appointed “inventor of the future” tech CEO (Magnussen) and his self-serving “performance psychologist” (Goldberg), who is engulfed in a scandal sparked by the exploitation of personal data. Along with Glatzer, the series will be executive produced by Gina Mingacci (“Killing Eve”) and is one of many high-profile Silicon Valley-set dramas put in development, but the first to receive a series order. A writer on such shows as “Succession” and “Better Call Saul,” among others, Glatzer was a producer on the latter series and a supervising producer on the former. He was also a co-executive producer of Apple TV’s “Bad Sisters.” As for Magnussen, since exiting his role on the CBS soap “As The World Turns” in 2010, following the show’s cancellation, he has wracked up several dozen television and film credits, including starring roles in such shows as “Maniac,” “Tell Me a Story,” and “Made for Love.” He most recently starred in the series “The Franchise” for Max, the streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery. Magnussen has made memorable appearances in the shows “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “The Bold Type” and “Black Mirror,” among others. Some of his film credits include “Ingrid Goes West,” “Game Night,” “No Time to Die,” and more recently “Spy Kids: Armageddon” and “Road House,” also starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. Later this year, Magnussen will lend his voice when he plays the role of Pleakly in the live-action reimagining of the 2002 Disney animated classic, “Lilo & Stitch.” The movie is about a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family and is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025. BTG: February 2025 Discussion Thread
I doubt it. Remember, having characters appear on each show means they all have to take place in the same universe. Additionally, since the producers and production studios behind Beyond the Gates are not the same as B&B/Y&R, it will be that much harder from a financial standpoint and with unions/guilds. Personally, I'd rather live in the fantasy of a single show and not have to watch other shows to get an idea of what is going on with the characters.

ARTICLE: Cause of Death Determined for ‘General Hospital’ Star Leslie Charleson
The official cause of death for “General Hospital” star Leslie Charleson (Monica Quartermaine) has been determined by the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner. According to a report recently filed by the medical examiner, Charleson passed away on January 12, 2025, aged 79, after suffering from sequelae of blunt head trauma, or what is also known as traumatic brain injury (TBI) with the manner of death being classified as an accident. Other significant medical conditions listed included Charleson’s history of asthma, arthritis, atrial fibrillation (aka AFib, which is an irregular heartbeat that affects the upper chambers of the heart), as well as normal pressure hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain), the latter of which can cause brain injury, with such symptoms as memory loss, difficulty with walking, and bladder issues, among other matters. On the day of her death, Variety reported the actress had “suffered several falls that prevented her from getting around. Although it impeded her mobility and resulted in her need for a walker, it never got her spirit down.” Charleson was hospitalized the week before her death after one such fall. Born February 22, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, Charleson made her television debut in 1964 on the soap opera “A Flame in the Wind,” playing a character named Pam. Later, she took on the role of Alice Whipple on “As The World Turns” before truly making a name for herself when she portrayed Iris Donnelly on “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing.” She joined “General Hospital” in 1977 as a recast Monica Quartermaine, the wife of Alan Quartermaine (the late Stuart Damon), who famously had an affair with former lover Rick Webber (Chris Robinson) which helped establish one of the most popular love triangles in daytime history with Alan notoriously “stalking” the pair as he worked to keep tabs on what he thought they were doing behind his back. Throughout her career, Charleson received four Daytime Emmy Awards nominations for her portrayal of Monica Quartermaine, first in 1980 in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series, along with nominations in 1982 and 1983 in the same category. In 1995, Charleson received her fourth nomination but by that time the category had been renamed to Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Outside of daytime, Charleson appeared in episodes of such shows as “The Rockford Files,” “Dharma & Greg,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” “Barnaby Jones” and “Canon,” among others. Charleson made her final appearance on “General Hospital” in December 2023, appearing in scenes opposite co-stars Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine) and Michael Easton (ex-Hamilton Finn), among others. She also appeared in scenes at the Quartermaine mansion as the family celebrated the holidays. Watch a clip from one of Charleson’s final appearances on “General Hospital” below. ARTICLE: Hank Northrop, Son of Lynn Herring and the Late Wayne Northrop, Joins ‘Days of our Lives’
Hank Northrop, son of “General Hospital” star Lynn Herring (Lucy Coe) and the late Wayne Northrop, has joined the cast of “Days of our Lives,” although character details have not been released, nor his official air date. In an interview with TV Insider, Northrop talked with the outlet about his following in the footsteps of his late father, specifically working at the same Burbank studio where his dad taped scenes when he played the iconic role of Roman Brady from 1981-1984, and again from 1991-1994 – from 2005-2006, Wayne returned to the series but took on a new persona as Dr. Alex North. “I did the audition and I felt good about it, but my focus was on my father,” the younger Northrop recalled, thinking back to the time when he was mourning the loss of his dad who passed away on November 29, 2024. “It kind of took the back burner in my mind. And then I got a callback and didn’t hear for a little bit. And then the most magical thing happened on my birthday, January 9. I got the call saying, ‘Congratulations, you’ve booked ‘Days of our Lives.’” http://www.soapoperanetwork.com/media/2024/12/Wayne-Northrop-RIP-1024x576.jpgCourtesy; ABC Photo Archives; NBC Photo Bank/NBCUniversal (Courtesy) “I just immediately broke down in tears. It was so cosmic. It was almost like my dad had given me a birthday present, the first birthday after his passing, to help me through the trauma of dealing with his passing,” continued Northrop. “You can’t script it. It gave me the ability to cope with it a little more. It was just such a beautiful full-circle moment and I thank [Executive Producer] Ken Corday, [Co-Executive Producer] Janet Spellman-Drucker, [Casting Director] Marnie Saitta, and the production team.” While he wasn’t at liberty to reveal who he’d be playing on the show, Northrop did share that his first scenes would be with James Reynolds (Abe Carver). “First of all, it was so cool because he and my dad had such a great working relationship, and they didn’t tell him that I was coming on to work with him. So when I saw him for the first time, he just lit up,” Northrop remembered of his meeting up with Reynolds, exclaiming how the veteran actor had taken him under his wing and taught him how things are done at the show. “He never lost his sense of humor. He would joke around the whole time. Up until his very last days, he always had a smile and was always teasing people,” said Hank of his father, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years before his passing. Ricky Middlesworth/Disney Talking about what his mom, Lynn, has to say about the experience, Hank says, “She has been so supportive. She gave me so much great advice before my first day and gave me so many tips heading into it. She’s been the best support system I could possibly ask for. I feel so privileged and so honored to have her in my life, as I’m now embarking on my ‘DAYS’ journey, because, what better reference point than a woman who’s been doing the genre for almost 40 years now?” Among his numerous television credits, Northrop had a memorable role in the pilot episode of “The Morning Show,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, and appeared in multiple episodes of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and he’ll appear in the upcoming Paramount Network series, “The Madison,” a spinoff of “Yellowstone” starring Michelle Pfeiffer. YouTube TV announced late last night that it had reached a “short-term extension” to its carriage rights deal with Paramount, wherein the Google-owned TV streaming service will continue providing subscribers with such channels as CBS, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, TV Land and BET, among other networks and services. “We’ve reached a short term extension as we work toward a deal with Paramount to keep their content on YouTube TV,” the service said in a statement. “YouTube TV subscribers continue to have access to Paramount channels, including CBS, and any recordings that are in their Library. We appreciate your patience as we continued to negotiate on your behalf. We also value Paramount’s partnership and willingness to work towards an agreement.” YouTube/Paramount+ Details on the deal were not made available at press time, particularly the length of the extension. When a user on X asked for clarification on what “short term” meant, the service responded, saying, “We’ll share more updates as we have them. At the time, YouTube TV said in a statement, “We work hard to bring you the content you love, delivered the way you want. Despite our best efforts, we’ve been unable to reach a fair deal with Paramount to keep their channels on YouTube TV and their channels may be unavailable tomorrow.” Launched in February 2017, YouTube TV is an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service operated by YouTube and has emerged as the fourth largest TV service provider in the U.S. with eight million subscribers as of February 2024. On its website, KeepParamount.com, the company says of talks with YouTube TV, “The comprehensive deal Paramount is proposing would continue our relationship with YouTube TV, enabling them to give you access to our leading broadcast and cable networks at a fair price.” Touting its successful lineup of networks, Paramount also noted, “CBS has the #1 new series, comedy series, and news magazine plus is #1 in daytime and late night.” Paramount owns, co-owns, or has a controlling interest in 23 networks, including those listed below. RE: The Price is Right vs. The Talk ratings. Finally got the actual viewership numbers (rare these days!) for the game show's repeats, albeit for a single week. Again, "The Talk" was a failure in comparison. Not just with its 15th and final season, but also Season 14 and likely Season 13 and Season 12. Overall, that talk show hadn't seen Total Viewer numbers like the encore broadcasts of TPIR received last week since at least 2021 or 2022, and in many cases since 2020. What a waste. RATINGS: Encores of ‘The Price is Right’ Top Final Season of ‘The Talk,’ ‘The View’ Sustains Lead Among Network News & Talk Shows Encore broadcasts of "The Price is Right" top original episodes of "The Talk" (Season 15) among Total Viewers. According to figures released by Nielsen, an encore of the second half-hour episode of “The Price is Right” averaged 1.769 million viewers at 2:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT while an encore of the first half-hour averaged 1.694 million viewers at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT, well and above the 15th and final season average of “The Talk” (1.240 million). Sonja Flemming/CBS Compared to the same week last year, encores of “The Price is Right” were up substantially from the performance of “The Talk,” which averaged just 1.352 million viewers during the week of February 5-9, 2024. Note: Original episodes of “The Price is Right” aired in the game show’s regular timeslot. Total Viewers for the original episodes were not available at press time. Out of the 13 weeks “The Talk” aired during its final season, only the final week of shows performed the best, averaging 1.319 million viewers (week of December 16-20, 2024). One week earlier, the show averaged 1.302 million (week of December 9-13, 2024). The talk show hit a season low during week two of the season (week of September 30-Octobebr 4, 2024), averaging just 1.166 million viewers. In other ratings news, “The View” continues to top the charts among daytime network talk shows and news programs, averaging 2.565 million viewers for the week. It beat out “TODAY 3rd Hour” (1.917 million), “TODAY with Jenna & Friends” (1.429 million) and “NBC News Daily” (1.230 million). ARTICLE: YouTube TV & Paramount Dispute Could Impact Launch of ‘Beyond the Gates,’ Access to CBS Soaps
Right. Any channel or network you can watch on YouTube TV, that is owned or co-owned by Paramount, even those that are available because of Paramount having some sort of involvement, could go dark for subscribers of the YouTube TV streaming service. The channels themselves aren't going dark. YouTube TV is just another cable/satellite provider like DIRECTV, Spectrum, Cox, Comcast, DISH, et al. They just provide their services through a streaming platform where you can watch on the go, on any device. If it goes dark, of course, it is worrisome. Disputes don't usually last that long, although Disney's dispute with DIRECTV last September lasted for two weeks.

ARTICLE: YouTube TV & Paramount Dispute Could Impact Launch of ‘Beyond the Gates,’ Access to CBS Soaps
Soap fans are in danger of losing access to “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Young and the Restless” and even the brand new soap opera “Beyond the Gates” due to a contract dispute between YouTube TV and Paramount, owner of CBS and Paramount+, among other media networks. In a statement released on Wednesday, YouTube TV said on X (formerly Twitter), “For our members: We work hard to bring you the content you love, delivered the way you want. Despite our best efforts, we’ve been unable to reach a fair deal with Paramount to keep their channels on YouTube TV and their channels may be unavailable tomorrow.” “We understand how frustrating and disruptive this is for our users,” the service added. “We’re committed to continuing conversations with Paramount to advocate for you and hope to keep their channels on YouTube TV. If no agreement is reached for an extended time, we’ll offer members an $8 credit. You can watch Paramount shows/movies on the Paramount+ streaming service, starting at $7.99/mo.” The dispute would impact subscribers after February 13, should an agreement not be reached in time with Paramount, with networks/services like CBS and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME, no longer being available to subscribers of YouTube TV beginning Friday. It would also impact fans of March Madness should the matter reach that level. Additionally, with YouTube TV recently raising its monthly subscription fee from $73 to $83, many current customers are sharing their frustration with the service, leading to many contemplating switching to other TV streaming services such as Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, Sling and DIRECTV STREAM, among others. Ultimately, the dispute is just another ongoing round where customers are directly impacted in contract discussions between service providers and media companies, with costs increasing as a result. During the week of February 17-21, CBS in particular will be providing a sneak peek at its new daytime drama series, “Beyond the Gates,” with the daytime special “Beyond the Gates: Welcome to the Neighborhood.” A loss in coverage could see millions of potential viewers without a chance to preview what’s to come on the series. ARTICLE: ‘IMPACT x Nightline: What’s Happening With Wendy Williams?’ Is Now Streaming on Hulu
Hulu on Thursday dropped a fresh “IMPACTxNightline” episode titled “IMPACTxNightline: “What’s Happening with Wendy Williams?” where the beleaguered former talk show host discusses her court-appointed guardianship, her dementia diagnosis and living in the memory unit of a healthcare facility. Produced by ABC News Studios, the episode is led by “Nightline” co-anchor Byron Pitts and features a new audio interview with Wendy Williams, and interviews with those close to her, including her brother, Tommy Williams, and her friends Sunny Hostin, a former federal prosecutor and co-host of “The View,” and Jason Lee, CEO of Hollywood Unlocked. Additional interviews include Henry Brown, Wendy Williams’ former colleague at KISS FM 98.7; Janine Rubenstein, editor-at-large, PEOPLE magazine; Dr. Leah Croll, neurologist; Kelley Carter, senior entertainment reporter, Andscape; and Brian Buckmire, ABC News legal contributor. According to a logline, Wendy Williams has broken her silence on her guardianship, challenging her dementia diagnosis and pleading for her independence. “IMPACT x Nightline” speaks with Williams and dives deep into her case as her guardian calls for her to be reevaluated. Last week, Williams’ guardian Sabrina Morrissey called for a “new medical evaluation” in a court filing after the former talk show host made an appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” claiming she wasn’t “incapacitated,” PEOPLE reported. “I don’t have frontotemporal dementia…it’s disgusting,” Williams commented on the radio program on the Wednesday, February 5 episode of the radio show. “That’s a very rare thing for anybody to have.” “I’m not incapacitated,” she added. “I am not a baby.” Morrissey is actively suing A&E Networks, Lifetime Entertainment and its affiliated companies, stemming from the Lifetime airing of the docuseries “Where is Wendy Williams?” in 2023, claiming the entities “shamelessly exploits [Williams] and portrays her in an extremely demeaning and undignified manner.” In the filing, it’s said that “This case arises from the brutally calculated, deliberate actions of powerful and cravenly opportunistic media companies working together with a producer to knowingly exploit [Williams].” For 12 of the show’s 13 seasons, Wendy Williams hosted the popular daytime talk show “The Wendy Williams Show,” which was produced and distributed in national syndication by Debmar-Mercury. Those stations include WABC in New York, KABC in Los Angeles, WLS in Chicago, WPVI in Philadelphia, KGO in San Francisco, KTRK in Houston, WTVD in Raleigh-Durham and KSAT in San Antonio, which is the sole non-ABC O&O station making the change.

Right. GH was moved to 2:00 p.m. nationally, taking over the slot previously held by OLTL because ABC stupidly gave back GH's regular time slot to entice stations to pick up Katie. Since Katie failed and the 4:00 p.m. ET/3:00 p.m. PT local news became a standard, ABC moved GH back to its original slot on 7 of its 8 Owned stations. Only one other non-ABC-owned station followed the network's changes and did the same. Again, if the 2:00 p.m. slot was where OLTL aired in your area, GH is airing in that slot and has ever since. Only the ABC Owned stations (7 of 8), moved the show back to its original slot. If that was 3:00 p.m. like on WABC, that's why it moved back. If OLTL was on at 1:00 p.m. in your area, GH took over that slot in 2012. If it got moved to 2:00 p.m., and that was GH's regular slot, your station is either owned by ABC or your affiliate is the non-ABC Owned station that opted to follow suit with ABC Owned Stations.
