Loving/The City Discussion Thread
"Loving" was MY soap. My family watched the ABC soaps, particularly "All My Children'" and "General Hospital," but "Loving" was my show. I would even SKIP school just to watch my favorite character, Ava, and her hijinks with Alex and Jeremy. The theme song was just a dream. The only show at the time with a lyrical opening. Man I was pissed when it was canceled and replaced by "The City." Had no clue it was happening since I didn't get the soap mags at the time. Was just getting into it then. The new show was alright, but most of the characters that moved over weren't the ones I cared much for. To me, this is the soap that could be rebooted easily even if you get a whole host of new characters and change the setting. Just follow the beats of Agnes Nixon, and this murder mystery story in particular, and you'll have the BEST 30 minute soap in ages. Just need people who aren't going to shit on soaps with malarkey and sci-fi nonsense to do it.

Y&R to air classic episodes
Just seeing how two "classic" episodes have aired, both in April, and this discussion thread has more views and comments than the entirety of Y&R's original episodes thread for April. Either we are a group of old timers feeling nostalgic, or Y&R isn't that interesting to many of you these days.

Thank god we got the complete episode of Y&R. The president just interrupted B&B.

EEEE! Even the classic Columbia Pictures Television jingle. So nostalgic.

Y&R to air classic episodes
Between this and the ATWT reunion at 2, it feels like a classic CBS soaps day with a relatively recent episode of B&B in the middle.

Y&R to air classic episodes
No interruptions in NY, so far. The drama in this episode is SOOOO good. What ever happened to Miguel? So weird seeing Jack in Victor's house.

Y&R to air classic episodes
I came across it while I was writing and thought it worked VERY well with the article. Thanks for publishing it. Really liked seeing the actors doing a mall tour when soaps were able to generate such massive amounts of fans in one place. The good old days.

That's the date the show is reporting to all of us so...

Y&R to air classic episodes
Nope. The episode is from March 9, 1993. Not March 23, 1993 as Canada apparently got. Same storylines were happening though. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2020/04/yr-returns-to-1993-for-dru-and-neils-honeymoon-and-jills-pregnant-with-billy

Did I miss something?- Y&R to air classic episodes
I believe the episodes will be edited, but only to supplant it with different music (due to music rights issues) and to accommodate current commercial time standards. The issue with reducing to half-hour to help extend the shows is what the air the other half-hour. Plus, do you air the new episode at the top of the hour or the back half? They don't want to lose viewers, so it'll be a tough call on what they eventually decide and how to promote it so that viewers don't get confused. Tonight marks the beginning of reduced scheduling for the British soaps so we'll soon hear how their fans react.- Y&R to air classic episodes
Yup. Hosted by Reba McEntire, the show was quite popular and was the go-between the cancellation of "The City" and the launch of "Port Charles." As noted by KMan101, they were 30-minute editions of classic episodes of the ABC soaps, "All My Children," "General Hospital" and "One Life to Live." Reba introduced key moments during each break as a way to help explain away the heavily edited out material since it was just a half-hour version of the shows. I really enjoyed them and was saddened when it was over. "Port Charles" was alright, but it was never, to me, as good as "Loving" or the other ABC soaps at the time. Only Y&R is currently confirmed to be airing a non-original on Friday (awaiting official word from CBS on what it is they'll air), but I would imagine they must be thinking of following the British shows to some extent. While Mon-Wed makes the most sense, scheduling wise, CBS might opt to do what the British broadcasters have done and just air as little as two episodes per week. By RC Cates' comments, the show only has 15 episodes left, including this week. That only takes us to 5 weeks of shows if Mon-Wed, but we know the show will air Mon-Thur this week, which leaves us with even less.- Y&R to air classic episodes
The "classic" episodes didn't really muster in the ratings and they weren't even classics to begin with. Only "classic" episodes aired featuring Vanessa Marcil's Brenda Barrett have generated any interest by ABC's viewers. She was a HUGE draw for that network. Another reason is music rights and material not jiving with what was currently airing at the time. Hence, ABC aired "current" story related reruns on holidays before outright deciding to cancel all their scripted soaps, saving GH at the last minute. Back to Y&R...can't comment on what ya'll are talking about just yet. Probably tomorrow I can though.- Passions Discussion Thread
"Sunset Beach" was partially produced by Spelling Television, which was absorbed by CBS. Don't think they'd be interested in any of it. I think with "Passions," NBC knows its a cult classic and is playing it up as long as it costs next to nothing. Before I read the context (didn't see your whole post outside of the sidebar preview on the front page), I was thinking you meant a supernatural "One Life to Live" spinoff would have been a good idea. With that said, yeah, I think Ron Carlivati is good for outlandish, supernatural-ish type programs moreso than the soaps that are on today. What I wish he would have done with "DAYS" was instead of playing old stories again, do the unexpected and make things more character based and more love and passion without pairing up rapists/murderers with heroins. Or rehashing dead, dead, dead, princess storylines, or resurrecting a respectfully dead character.- Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
Before Disney+ was released, Disney noted that the streaming service would be for family oriented programming only. They have set Hulu up for the adult oriented programming, particularly the FX related content. If the ABC soaps were to have their libraries available on a streaming service it would definitely go through Hulu. Ironically, that's where the reboots were hosted for the short period they occurred.- GH: Classic Thread
