Conan O'Brien, Oscars, The Oscars, The Academy Awards

Hosted by Conan O’Brien, ABC’s broadcast of “The 97th Oscars” on Sunday, March 2 was the most-watched and highest-rated program of the night, pulling in a 3.92 rating among Adults 18-49 and hitting a five-year high among Adults 18-34, while emerging as the most social program of the season for the first time on record, topping last month’s broadcasts of “The 67th Annual Grammy Awards” on CBS and “Super Bowl LIX” on FOX.

With 18.07 million viewers tuning in, the awards show now stands as the most-watched entertainment telecast of the 2024-2025 television season. That said, last year’s telecast performed better, averaging 19.5 million viewers and hitting a four-year high for the awards show. Additionally, this year’s telecast was also below 2023’s broadcast, which averaged 18.8 million viewers.

ABC should still be pleased with the performance as it topped the 10.4 million viewers who watched in 2021 and the 2022 viewership of the scandal-plagued broadcast that saw 16.6 million viewers watch Will Smith slap Chris Rock after the then-Oscar host made a slapstick joke about Smith’s wife and her alopecia.

Among Adults 18-49, the Oscars were up +3% year-to-year (3.92 rating vs. 3.82 rating) and marked its best performance in the key sales demographic in two years (March 12, 2023), with its 3.17 rating among Adults 18-34 outperforming the show’s pre-pandemic audience from five years ago (since February 9, 2020).

Averaging 104.2 million social interactions, the awards show stands as the most social program season-to-date, overtaking both the Grammys (102.2 million interactions) and the Super Bowl (62.4 million interactions).

Overall, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences noted that the Oscars saw an increase of +82% year-over-year in social engagement across all platforms, including Hulu, where it streamed live for the first time, reaching 64 million likes, comments and shares.

The ASL livestream on the official Oscars YouTube channel received 1.4 million views.

Immediately following the Oscars, ABC broadcast a 30-minute preview of the upcoming season of “American Idol,” which was viewed by 5.93 million viewers and earned a 0.84 rating among Adults 18-49. The post-Oscars viewing was the talent competition series’ best performance for a season launch in three years (since February 27, 2022) among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

On Sunday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, “American Idol” officially kicks off its eighth season on ABC with episodes available to stream the next day on Hulu.

    • Justine had a lot of hooey in it, but she was an actual woman, not a guy in drag. She was a doppelganger of Rachel, French, having had a past history with Carl, etc. Two of the more outrageous parts-Justine bricking alive Vicky into a wall & Justine grinding the gears driving a big rig.
    • Hehe, twi/x actually x, formerly Twitter. Typically I find 2 sources for "crazy fan rumors" - the wrong parts of FB and x. Oy.
    • Not to hijack the thread, but was that character Justine? I just found this interview online with Logan and see what you're talking about - wow!   http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/chat85.html
    • My bad….ill fix that  Fixed
    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
