GH: February 2025 Discussion Thread

For completionism sake the Lily/Miguel side of the story is them finding Juan (and perhaps future PC resident cousin Sabrina), meeting him, deciding he's better off with his adoptive parents, and leaving him in Puerto Rico.  That basically puts a pin in that story until Juan shows up aged a few years later.  Compared to the Sonny plot it's all very pointless and dull which is just par for the course for Lily/Miguel in general.

I don't have much love for the Sabrina era of GH, so I still haven't quite figured out how Juan and somehow Lily's (fake?) brothers are related to or involved with Sabrina.

According to Sabrina, Marcos Santos is the son of her aunt Inocencia Santiago and was friends with Carlos Rivera. And Armando Santiago is her uncle, so that would make Juan Santiago her adoptive cousin. What they [should] have done was make her related to Dolores Santiago (removing the mention of Inocencia).

You know I live for you not liking Lily/Miguel. Though I know you have warm to Lily over time.

I go back and forth over Sabrina myself. I had already left before Sabrina/Michael started though it sounded like it had potential.

Yep.

Lol!  I read that like four times and it still makes little sense through no fault of yours.  Tying Sabrina to Juan is just boring on top of boring lol.

So are Carlos and his twin actually related to Lily or was that a lie?  I am sure it doesn't really matter because it didn't really make any difference in the story anyhow.

Sadly, I was thinking about them and Lily/Miguel would probably be a popular pairing pushed in this current era.  Against the embarrassment of riches with mid 90's couples they were glaringly bad. Realistically, they had as much chemistry as BLQ and Chase do today lol.  Lily's baby rabies and adoption woes would fit right in.

It's what he did, continuously and endlessly.

I don't believe Carlos and his brother Joe Rivera are related to Lily in any kind of way. It is Sabrina (and her child/children) that would be related. But Carlos and Joe are not.

I swear at least Carlos said he was Lily's illegitimate half brother or told Sonny that.  I just don't recall if that was true or not.

ETA-His soapcentral bio just says "Relatives-unknown (he claims to be Lily's half brother)"-SIC.  So..........I guess we just don't know lol.

And, I guess we are at a point where we think the stabbing was just enough to put Dex into the hospital so Cyrus could complete his serial killer pattern/MO with the digitalis as opposed to just stabbing him to death right there outside Rice Plaza. I wonder if this storyline is going to get into how Cyrus chose his victims. Probably not.

Yeah, we really did have it good. As far as romances that I'm currently liking...I would say Jordan and Isaiah, Brennan and Carly once it moved, Ava and Ric once it moves, Liz and Lucky when they are shown...but I think you get what I'm saying.

Back then, couples were built and build mostly organically. Heck thinking like that...I think the only one that's building and actually shown at the moment is Jordan and Isaiah. lol.

And to think before that, the only couple building WAS BLQ and Chase (with Cody and Sasha on the side) and look at them now. smh.

Okay.  Your memory sounds about the same as mine.  He claimed he was related to Lily to Sonny, Sonny said he'd look into it, and we just never got confirmation one way or the other.  I am sure there was probably an actual idea at some point to tie Juan, Sabrina, Carlos, Julian etc together into some plot against Sonny.  Ron either got bored or realized no one on canvas besides Sonny would care about characters related to Lily in 2013.

He was just throwing out references to tie-in his own character creations, likely in the hopes they'd continue on well beyond his exit. Boy, oh boy, was he wrong. Little to none of his created characters still exist outside of Ava and... who else?

    • It surprises/disappoints me too that GL's ratings during '89-'93 don't reflect the quality of the show. But when I call it great soap, I'm not defining that by ratings either.  I'm probably in the minority, but I think Reilly takes something intangible with him when he goes. There's a sense of humor that just disappears in '93.
    • Ok, I know nothing about Another World except their catchy intro song from long ago, but this makes me want to catch!  That crazy mother keeping her son's girlfriend or wife hostage, wow!
    • And maybe Hotel could have been placed at 9pm Tues instead of Paper Dolls. Not that I thing it was a surefire thing but at least viewers were familiar with the show and it might have done better than PD. ABC's line up was pretty threadbare at that point. And with a big guest star to launch the season - Elizabeth Taylor- the numbers would have been there initially.
    • Any fan of RuPaul would dispute calling any of these examples “drag”. A costume?, A disguise?, A lame attempt at humor? -- yes -- Drag? -- nope
    • No asterisk. I meant that the circumstances during the first year were in her favor.
    • Maybe I am misunderstanding you? Are you suggesting that her success at GL should have an asterisk next to it because she was smart enough to exploit a weakness in the marketplace to gain ratings?  Note: Try not to take this personally—I’m not accusing anyone of being consciously misogynistic. I’m simply proposing that the origins of certain ideas about Ms. Phelps—such as claims that she was unprepared or a poor manager of her writing staff—may be rooted in misogyny. Perhaps, with the benefit of hindsight, it's worth reconsidering those opinions. At the very least, imagine being one of the few women in the room while a male network executive tries to decide what women want to watch during the day. That context has certainly led me to reassess many of my own long-held views.
    • Through 78 and 79 under Marland and Pat Falken smith GH was still heavily hospital based with a mix of storylines. The Doctors would have been fine had they followed that template. Once GH went with Ice Princess all bets were off.Who knows how much TD would have copied that direction? And OLTL, DOOL went in that direction quite heavily while other shows dabbled in far out stories. The thing is that TD was well set up for an expansion.

    • Aaron Spelling still had clout with ABC in Fall 1984, as I think they knew he was going to pull out all the stops for Dynasty to get to #1, which he did. That's probably why ABC kept Hotel as Dynasty lead out. Fall 1985 with the sale to Capital Cities and Brandon Stoddard arrival, Aaron Spelling would lose his clout with ABC.
    • Correction, July 1991 to May 1995. JFP got the ratings up during her first year, but it also helped that ABC big three were tanking at various times during that year and Days was in their post-supercouple/pre-Reilly mess era. It will always disappoint me that the ratings during the Calhoun/Long/Curlee era did not reflect the quality of the show.
