ARTICLE: ABC Cancels ‘Big Sky,’ ‘The Company You Keep’ and ‘Alaska Daily’

As the network prepares to reveal its Fall TV schedule for the 2023-2024 broadcast season, ABC on Friday canceled dramas “Big Sky,” “The Company You Keep” and “Alaska Daily.” All three shows were produced by corporate sibling 20th Television, a division of Disney Television Studios.

“Big Sky” aired on ABC for three seasons while “The Company You Keep” and “Alaska Daily” aired for just one season. At press time, “Rookie: Feds” remained the only drama not yet renewed or canceled by the network but its chances seem to have improved with the axing of the three other shows.

“Big Sky”

In the show’s third season, officially titled “Big Sky: Deadly Trails,” Private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) maintain order in Helena, Montana, with their unparalleled investigative skills. But when a local backcountry trip led by charismatic outfitter Sunny Barnes (Reba McEntire) goes awry, the trio faces their most formidable mystery yet – in which no camper can be trusted and where danger lurks around every jagged rock and gnarled tree. The series also starred Dedee Pfeiffer as Denise Brisbane, Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Tonya Wallis and J. Anthony Pena as Deputy Mo Poppernak.

“Big Sky” is based on the series of books by C.J. Box, with “Big Sky: Deadly Trails” being executive produced by David E. Kelley, Elwood Reid and Ross Fineman. Elwood Reid (“The Chi,” “Hawaii Five-0”) serves as showrunner and executive producer. “Big Sky: Deadly Trails” is produced by 20th Television in association with A+E Studios. 20th Television is a part of Disney Television Studios.

The show aired what is now its series finale on January 18, 2023.

“The Company You Keep”

Launched as a midseason replacement, “The Company You Keep” follows con man Charlie and undercover CIA officer Emma, who, after a night of passion leads to love, are unknowingly on a collision course as their professional lives collide. While Charlie ramps up the “family business” so he can get out for good, Emma’s closing in on the vengeful criminal who holds Charlie’s family debts in hand – forcing them to reckon with the lies they’ve told so they can save themselves and their families from disastrous consequences. The series is based on the Korean Broadcasting System series entitled “My Fellow Citizens.”

The series starred Milo Ventimiglia as Charlie, Catherine Haena Kim as Emma, William Fichtner as Leo, Tim Chiou as David, Freda Foh Shen as Grace, James Saito as Joseph, Sarah Wayne Callies as Birdie, Felisha Terrell as Daphne and Polly Draper as Fran.

Executive producers and co-showrunners are Julia Cohen and Phil Klemmer, Milo Ventimiglia and Russ Cundiff (DiVide Pictures), Jon M. Chu and Caitlin Foito (Electric Somewhere), Todd Harthan and Lindsay Goffman (Gratitude Productions). Deanna Harris (DiVide Pictures) is a producer.

The show aired what is now its series finale on May 7, 2023.

“Alaska Daily”

From the mind of Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), “Alaska Daily” starred Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, a fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption. 

In addition to Swank, the series also starred Jeff Perry as Stanley Cornik, Matt Malloy as Bob Young, Meredith Holzman as Claire Muncy, Grace Dove as Rosalind “Roz” Friendly, Pablo Castelblanco as Gabriel Tovar, Ami Park as Yuna Park and Craig Frank as Austin Teague.

McCarthy created the series and served as an executive producer alongside Hilary Swank, Melissa Wells, Bert Salke, Kyle Hopkins (Anchorage Daily News), Ryan Binkley (Anchorage Daily News) and Peter Elkoff, who served as showrunner.

The show aired what is now its series finale on March 30, 2023.
