Regardless I the Russian federation missing - this was a huge moment for US Figure skating in a sport that has had its share of massive tragedy spanning decades.  

We posted some about the January 2025 plane crash in the Politics Thread (since it had become a political issue).  In the process of posting about that, we discussed the skaters and honored them.

To be honest, I had forgotten this skating thread existed.  Then a couple of days ago, I saw a clip of Ilia Malinin winning the World championship in March 2025, and remembered this thread, and thought to post his winning freeskate video here.

In the above video from the March 2 "Legacy on Ice" event, Maxim Naumov is skating to honor his parents, the 1994 pairs world champions Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, who had competed for Russia and had relocated to Massachusetts.  His parents became skating coaches and died in the crash, and he's skating to their favorite song to honor them.

Some of the skaters who died in the crash were from Washington DC, some were from Russia, and some were from Boston; and also from Korea who had become U.S. citizens.  Adults and children, coaches and students.
They were returning from a skating camp in Kansas when the plane crashed.
Also on the plane were other victims from around the world who weren't skaters.
The non-skater passengers were from USA, Philippines, China, and more, and of multiple ethnicities.

The group skates to John Lennon's "Imagine" and then a moment of silence.

Interviews and clips from the World Championships in Boston, late March 2025,
in tribute to all the skaters from everywhere, who were lost in the January 2025 plane crash.
Especially poignant locally as some of those who died were members of the Boston Skating Club.
One of the speakers in Boston is a man who lost his wife (a coach) and child (a skating student/competitor) in the crash.  He is there to honor them.
Also interviewed in Boston is Maxim Naumov whose parents were both champions&coaches who died (as noted a few posts up from here).  Maxim says he intends to carry on his parents' legacy by mentoring young skaters.

Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov.  Alisa, born in Finland, has competed in the past for Finland, Russia, and Germany.  She now lives in the USA and competes for USA.
Her pairs skating partner Misha is from Wisconsin.
They are part of the Boston Skating Club, which lost 6 lives in the crash.

This is their free skate competition performance.  They dedicated this in honor of those who died in the crash, and afterwards they held up the photos of the Boston club members who died.

Oh Illia is from Reston!

I didn't realize the Russian Federation had been banned, but I understand the ban due to Ukraine.  So sad all around.

 Yes Ilia's win and his quads were indeed a huge moment.   Indeed a needed moment of joy.

Yes - there was an entire family that go to my dentist and I skate sometimes at the Ashburn Ice House.  The dentist office staff knew them well.  Very sad.  
 

National should have had limited flights long ago.  I never fly in and out of there.  They talked about it when I was little and I’m 55.  They only add flights, never reduce them.  I’ve witnessed a close call twice - in fact the only 2 times I ever went to gravelly point.  I know 2 air traffic controllers and a 3rd by association and 2 of them won’t fly, period, and the third won’t travel in and out of there - nor (like me - San Diego). San Diego almost never gets mentioned and that strip is in a hole.
