Dragnet 1967-1970

As a kid I got a kick out watching reruns of the late 60's series Dragnet back in the Nick at Nite days. Jack Webb would try to cram 1 hours worth of story and dialogue into 30 minutes. He he had a stock company of actors that he would use over and over. It was fun to see when Virginia Gregg was going to pop up and see who she was going to portray and how she would be made up. Jack Webb would put a teleprompter next to the camera and tell his actors to say the dialogue as fast as they could and keep the scene moving. A lot of soap actors did Dragnet such as Susan Seaforth Hayes, John McCook, Don Stewart, John Lupton, Judith McConnell, Brooke Bundy etc...

Someone has been uploading the series to youtube and I have binge watching them.

I take Adam-12 and Emergency! more seriously, but I don't have a problem watching good ol' Dragnet. I don't think I've ever seen a full episode of the 50s version, so when I think of the show, it's definitely the campy 60s run. Nearly every episode was a love letter to an older generation suffering through the horrors of youth culture. The funny thing is, I see clips of his monologues on social media all the time, and the people sharing them are cosigning him all the way.

I like Adam-12 and Emergency too. I don't think I have seen any complete 50's episodes either. Some of the most memorable of the late 60's run is the couple smoking pot and forget their baby in the tub with the water running and it drowns. The one about Blue Boy (Michael Burns) getting high on LSD and overdosing. Bonnie Bates (Virginia Gregg) running the pyramid scheme and holding meetings like a televangelist smacking a tambourine and preaching.

Another actress that made frequent appearances was Jill Banner. She would usually play a air head/spacey teen. Banner died in 1982 in a car accident. She was supposedly in a long term relationship with Marlon Brando.

    • Per Flixpatrol, it's been at 4-4-5 (June 3rd to 5th).   https://flixpatrol.com/title/days-of-our-lives/
    • Someone has been posted episodes from 1994 and Jill Powell (Marcy Lafferty) has a hot storyline right now. Just googled her and in real-life she is now openly out as a Lesbian with a transgender son.
    • Did anyone else notice that DAYS has not been in the Top 10 most streamed shows on Peacock this week??? I find that very strange considering how good the show has been, especially this week.
    • Cast changes in 2025 (so far, not much has happened): GZSZ Pauline Afaja (Flo Kästner) departed on March 10th, 2025. She had only been on the show for about a year. Flo as a character never really clicked with the audience. Her final storyline involved her catching feelings for the much older Nina Reichelt Klee Ahrens Navarro out of the blue – while she was in a relationship with the wheelchair-bound Jonas Seefeld. Onno Buß joined the cast as Julian Kaltenbach on January 31st, 2025. Julian is Matilda's twin brother ... and another illegitimate child of Jo Gerner. Charlott Reschke, who had played Johanna Flemming on a recurring basis from 2015 to 2024, returned at the end of May. The 20-year old actress has now been placed on contract. Last week on GZSZ:

    • Not to ramble too far off topic but it happens a lot with comics too, especially only wanting to keep cheap talent around and pushing out creative voices. There are some patches where creatives can go to start their own worlds...wish that was true with soaps, but who knows, maybe it can happen someday. I never thought we'd get a new soap this year.
    • Very true & also at least in the case of stand-out HWs, it is fraught with exhaustion & burnout.
