Members DRW50
It rambles a bit but I thought this article made some good points about the tendency for the press/critics to overrate and fawn over showrunners. Too bad they didn't say anything about overrated Joss Whedon. http://www.newrepublic.com/article/113374/why-tv-critics-should-stop-focusing-showrunners
Members EricMontreal22
I think one point is often fans seem to think these big name showrunners do more than they do. Joss Whedon wasn't technically even the actual showruner for Angel, Firefly or Dollhouse, for example. Or JJ Abrams had no involvement in Lost outside the pilot. Members DRW50
It was obvious to me at the time that he had little to do with some of those shows, especially as he basically dumped Buffy and Angel to go work on Firefly (which is one of the ultimate in "I like this show because it sounds cool to say I like it" shows). His becoming some type of "name" ultimately hurt his shows because it meant he didn't have to spend enough time on them to help keep them going.
