I found the wedding episodes beautiful, aside from Phillis' involvement. So grateful this is how they did the wedding, too; just wish they'd done some kind of flashback(s) when things were being talked about by Gina and Nina, etc.

I agree totally. While I didn't think EJ on Ryan's Hope was a well-conceived character, I very much enjoyed MG's performance.
It's interesting that everyone being named: Alex, India, Blake, Jenna...they pulled back on all of them either because of a romantic connection, or, like in Alex's and India's cases, because of love for their children.
If Alex was meant to be a bitch, you don't start off right away with a sob story about her child being stolen from her. I think they tried to harden her after Lujack was killed off, but there were always Alan's children around to soften her. And of course Simon, who for a while practically turned her into a jelly fish.
I'm going to say something that's maybe a bit controversial: I don't think Marland liked Morgan. There was a kind of underlying contempt for her, especially early on. Those lectures Kelly gave her were insanely hostile a lot of the time. And it seemed like the audience was supposed to be nodding and agreeing with him.
Morgan was meant to be a way for teen girls to dream about falling in love with an older boy (O.K., let's face it--man). The whole storyline was created to attract a younger audience. But I always got the feeling that she was not really loved by her own creator. I believe when Nola talked about hating Morgan, WE were supposed to hate her, too. Supposedly, Marland always meant for Kelly and Nola to get together for real at some point, so it would make sense for him to see Morgan, and not Nola, as the spoiler in the triangle.
Regardless of how anyone feels about that, it is absolutely true that Nola was softened a great deal because the pairing with Quinton took off and was very popular with a vocal section of the audience.
The premise that having a child or falling in love suddenly makes someone a nicer person is very odd to me. (I never found that to be the case in real life, LOL). I don't see why characters like Alex, India, or Blake had to lose their edge because they genuinely loved someone. Roger genuinely loved Christina, but he never lost his edge.

I loved how contrasting the relationships between Andrew and Megan and Cain and Megan were. Cain was opportunistic, parasitic even, and yet she felt that attraction... Like a moth to a flame. While Andrew was like her safe place, a warm looking little cabin in the dark of the woods. The two men were absolute opposites and I loved seeing Andrew fall in love with her slowly while she was using Cain to self destruct in a way, after her condition deteriorated. If the actress was not going away this could have been so interesting.
To this day I love how Andrew still hasn't forgotten Megan. Her photograph still in his drawer.

GL had so many generic heroines over those last decades it can be easy for me to forget they had some very interesting female characters, even toward the end. I am not too sorry the canvas wasn't littered with hams like Julia on ATWT.

@Xanthe Thank you once again for all of the information. I don't think I've ever encountered Ben in any of the episodes I've seen of the show. The actor was cute and charming so of course they got rid of him. I also will never understand the obsession with the character of Jake. I concede Tom Eplin is a good actor, but I would have been perfectly happy to lose the character especially after 1990.

I don't mind GL doesn't have a lot of villainesses, and tried to keep their characters from going over some imaginary line they couldn't come back from.

Jason and Todd do clash, but Jason becomes redundant with the new focus on Todd and the loss of Lee Ann (who they initially planned to recast with AMC's Sydney Penny, apparently). I find Jason (particularly in this period) to be the sort of benign prototype for Todd, in a lot of ways. He does get a very sweet sendoff in summer '94 though.
Cain is targeting Megan because he is hoping to run the same scam he attempted with equally rich heiress Tina in the summer. (Back when he was Hudson King and presumably first brought in by Rauch.) I wrote about this fall '91 period in here a lot over the last year, but it is interesting how far they go with Megan being tempted by him; Jessica Tuck and Christopher Cousins have real heat. Equally interesting is how they pivot in a week or so's time from Heinrich/Cain to Andrew having that same role in her life after Cain gets outed and briefly flees town. The men swap roles very fast, and Megan and Andrew quickly become BFF.
