He was 78 and in ill health when he died monday of cardiopulminary failure. He wrote many other hits and was considered a giant and legend of his field.

RIP to a man who--along with songwriting partner Mike Stoller--had such a major impact on rock and roll's first decade. In particular, the songs Lieber and Stoller wrote for Elvis Presley and the Coasters were huge hits.

Apparently the team had a musical about the life of Oscar Wilde (?!?! such an odd theme for them--but their flop musical The People In the Picture that played Broadway this year was about the Holocaust, so...) that's still in the pipeline in London.
