Here we go again:

<span style="font-size:120%;">L'Oréal SA heiress Liliane Bettencourt on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against her only child, the latest twist in a family dispute that centers on one of Europe's biggest fortunes. The new lawsuit adds to a growing legal battle that has been brewing between Ms. Bettencourt and her estranged daughter for three years, thrusting one of France's most private families into the spotlight.

In 2007, Françoise Bettencourt-Meyers filed a lawsuit against her mother's friend, society photographer François-Marie Banier, who she accuses of exploiting her mother's mental weakness to obtain nearly €1 billion ($1.4 billion) in gifts.

Ms. Bettencourt has rejected any claims of coercion by Mr. Banier, saying she chose to give him Picasso and Matisse masterpieces and valuable life-insurance policies.

However, she has recently distanced herself from him, and in August wrote him out of her will, her spokeswoman said.

As part of the daughter's lawsuit against Mr. Banier, Ms. Bettencourt-Meyers has asked the court three times to appoint a guardian and mandate medical tests.

In the new lawsuit, filed in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, the 88-year-old Ms. Bettencourt accuses her daughter of harassing her with requests for a court-appointed guardian and of attacking her in the media.

<span style="font-size:120%;"> Members of Mrs Bettencourt's entourage were quoted by Le Figaro newspaper yesterday, as preparing to remove Françoise Bettencourt-Meyers, and her husband, Jean-Pierre Meyers from the L'Oréal board and replace them with her eldest grandson, Jean-Victor, 25, and another "trusted" board member.

Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, 64, who led L'Oréal from 1988 to 2006, is said to have confided that the couple were scheming to sell the family shares to the Swiss firm Nestlé.

Mrs Bettencourt-Meyers filed criminal charges against the photographer François-Marie Banier, claiming that her mother was the victim of "abuse of weakness" earlier this year. Mrs Bettencourt gave the photographer almost €1 billion euros (£890 million) in cash, artworks and life insurance. Sir Lindsay is to be questioned by fraud investigators as a "witness".

Mrs Bettencourt's wealth manager was secretly recorded by her butler telling her that Sir Lindsay might try to forestall the sale of the stake in L'Oréal to Nestlé.

The Swiss food giant has a 29 per cent stake in the company and three representatives on its board.

For those who don't speak French:

<span style="font-size:120%;">L’Oreal SA heiress Liliane Bettencourt said she is in good health and “ready for a brawl” with her daughter in a radio interview recorded two days after she filed a harassment complaint.

Bettencourt, who turned 88 on Oct. 21, told Europe 1 radio in an interview aired today that she didn’t invite her daughter to celebrate with her and said she filed the complaint after her daughter sent a third request for her mother to be placed under a court-ordered guardian’s care.

“I think that I couldn’t have done otherwise,” said Bettencourt to Europe 1. “I am ready for a brawl.”

Bettencourt, France’s richest woman, and her daughter, Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers, have been engaged in a three-year battle over gifts to photographer and author Francois-Marie Banier. Meyers claims Banier abused her mother’s “frailty” to get gifts of art, real estate and insurance policies, while Bettencourt insists she was fully aware of her actions.

Secret recordings of Bettencourt, made by a former butler, spawned related inquiries into allegations of campaign finance violations related to President Nicolas Sarkozy’s 2007 election. Bettencourt denied giving him cash in violation of French laws.

“No, of course I don’t give out money like that,” she said in the interview.
