Members Soapsuds
A big weekend for the Olympics. Will it translate into Days getting a bump in the ratings? Here is some figures Fast National ratings for Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008 The opening days of the 2008 Summer Olympics have been big ratings winners for NBC, with Sunday's prime-time session continuing the trend. NBC averaged an 18.3 rating/31 share for the night, beating the combined total of the other four networks. The record will show that CBS finished second, way, way back at 3.6/6. ABC, 2.5/4, took third, followed by FOX, 1.6/3, and The CW, 0.5/1. NBC's adults 18-49 rating was 11.0 for the night, again blowing away the rest of the field. CBS averaged 1.3 to top the also-rans, beating out ABC's 1.1 and FOX's 1.0. The CW hardly registered. Coverage of the Olympics from Beijing drew a 13.9/26 for NBC at 7 p.m. CBS' "60 Minutes" earned a 4.4/8 to finish second. "America's Funniest Home Videos," 2.7/5, put ABC in third. A pair of "'Til Death" reruns gave FOX fourth for the hour, beating "One Tree Hill" on The CW. The Olympics, with heavy emphasis on gymnastics and swimming, improved to 18.8/32 at 8 p.m. CBS stayed in second as "Big Brother 10" delivered a 4.1/7. A repeat of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 2.4/4, on ABC edged "The Simpsons," 2.0/3, and "Family Guy," 2.2/4, on FOX. The CW aired reruns of "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Aliens in America." NBC's coverage peaked at 9 p.m. with a 20.6/32, drawing better than 37 million viewers for the hour. ABC's "EM: Home Edition" and CBS' "Million Dollar Password" tied for second at 3.1/5. "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" posted a 1.6/3 for FOX. "The Game" and "Girlfriends" finished the night for The CW. At 10 p.m., the Olympics dipped slightly to 20.0/33. "Cold Case," 2.7/4, kept CBS in front of ABC and "Desperate Housewives," 1.8/3. Friday's opening ceremonies, the most-watched ever for a non-U.S. Olympics, and Saturday's coverage also drew big ratings. Through the first three nights of the Games, NBC's prime-time average is up about 6 million viewers compared to the 2004 Games.
Members Ryan
I hope they benefit from the Olympics. DAYS is very good right now IMO, and I pray they get a bump from the high-profile lead in.
Webmaster Errol Posted August 11, 2008 Webmaster Share Posted August 11, 2008 I honestly don't believe the show will benefit from the Olympics lead-in. Not because of the quality of the show or any other factor, other than Sports audiences tend to not help out scripted programming, much less a "soap" opera. Members Soapsuds
What I can see is that Days is airing right after the Olympics in most of the markets. It is airing at 1pm here. It is usually on at 12:30 pm. But I've noticed it is on at 12 noon..its regular time in most markets after the Olympics. Days has gotten better. But do they really deserve the bump? This could be a good sign for Days. We will just have to wait and see. If the Olympics doesnt gave Days a boost nothing will. I have a feeling they will get a boost in ratings. Members quartermainefan
I can't see how this is a good match. They are just two programs coincidentally on the same channel. If you specifially tune in to NBC to watch Cuba and Poland box for the heavyweight gold medal or whatever, does it follow that you will say "That was a great fight. Oh look, Days Of Our Lives is on! Let me see if there is anything similar going on on that show!"
Members Soapsuds
The NBC lineup did go up one year. Days and Another World both had huge spikes in ratings. The tendency is for viewers to leave their sets tuned on to the channel they were just watching. Thus the increase in viewers.
Members jcar03
I don't see DAYS getting any huge increases off the Olympics they just don't have the same audience demo's for the stuff they show in the morning. Now if Gymnastics was on in the morning that may play into it.
Members Soapsuds
Here are more numbers Fast National ratings for Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics brought more big ratings to NBC Monday, completely dominating the other networks. The Olympics brought NBC a 17.6 rating/28 share in primetime. CBS was the best of the rest with a 4.1/7. ABC managed only a 1.9/3, but that was good enough to beat FOX (1.7/3) for third. The CW pulled in a 0.7/1. The story was similar in the adults 18-49 demographic, with NBC's 10.2 rating lapping the field several times. CBS took second with a 1.9. ABC, 1.0, was third, followed by FOX, 0.9, and The CW, 0.4. The Beijing Olympics scored a 15.9/26 for NBC at 8 p.m. Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" averaged 3.3/5 for CBS. "High School Musical: Get in the Picture" drew a 1.9/3 for ABC, edging a "Prison Break" rerun on FOX. A "Gossip Girl" repeat on The CW earned a 0.8/1. NBC's Olympic coverage improved to 17.0/26 at 9 p.m. CBS held onto second with "Two and a Half Men," 5.4/8, and "Old Christine," 3.9/6. Members jhc2010
The Olympic Basketball game between USA and China drew a huge 9.5 rating/24 share on NBC from 10:15am-12:15pm ET on Sunday Morning. The game was shown LIVE in the Eastern/Central and tape-delayed in Mountain/Pacific. Even though this game aired on the weekend, similar numbers are expected for weekday games in this same time period. More high-profile basketball games are scheduled in this time period including the Spain/USA game on Friday, August 15. That game is expected to begin at about 10:15am ET. Days will follow in many markets at 1pm ET.
Webmaster Errol Posted August 12, 2008 Webmaster Share Posted August 12, 2008 I hope this helps, but it isn't helping when the biggest market in the country (New York) airs the show at 2pm.
Members Soapsuds
The problem is the stuff they are showing in the morning is boring. Stuff most viewers wouldnt care about. I usually tune out during the morning. CNBC and MSNBC show better programming in the mornings. However, I still think Days will get a bump. Errol, what time does Days air in the NY market? I mean the regular time without Olympics? And is Days coming on right after the Olympics in NY market?
Webmaster Errol Posted August 12, 2008 Webmaster Share Posted August 12, 2008 I haven't paid much attention to NBC in months, but I can check our guides later. However, DAYS has been airing at 2pm since September, right after Passions was dumped by the network. It now competes with As The World Turns and One Life to Live, and One Life to Live is huge here.
