Most every writer can only go so long until they run out of steam and lose favour with their viewers. How many people have had awesome first stints but then when they return they are reviled? Perhaps it'd be better to impose a term limit and say that after a certain amount of time they have to leave and get replaced by someone fresh...

A good HW or EP is usually good long term. It's the effing executives who ruin things.

yeah soaps need continuity and you arent going to get that with HW/EP switching off every few years. I think the reason why Y&R was such a success for so long was bc of its stability. It only started to go downhill once they messed with that in the past couple of years by switching HW/EP.
