Lack of Racial Diversity in Daytime

Well McTavish wrote a great deal of the Campbells and Taggart stuff on GH and then Guza came back...and we nicely got Epiphany (walking, talking stereotype), Justus dead as a doornail, Lainey (talked about but not seen...unless she's rubbing the shoulders of the greater PC), Cassius (who I'm not sure what the hell he's supposed to be) and Regina (who is the only student nurse who doesn't have a storyline...but that didn't stop them from bringing on Nadine).

I have no hope for GH...so I would prefer they just stop trying or rather stop insulting me.

You know what is really sad? how much could be done with what they have. Lainey should have a much bigger role. She is smart, fun, sassy, and independent.

Ep is pretty much stuck. they cant do much with her. it is a stereotyooe role, but i like her, however Cassius is pointless and a waste of time.

But regina - she is played by the best actress to come off night shift and they so should have just made her into what they have made nadine into - even tho i love nadine.

Because it just irritates me. The more you speak Spanish here, the harder it will be to participate in a democratic process and get a good paying job. It is also a unifying factor for people to agree on a common language like they have in pretty much every country on this Earth except this one. I get really annoyed when, on the phone, I get these, "To continue this message in English, press one. Para espanol, prime number dos." This is America where the chief language is English. If you refuse to adapt, then you are making it harder on yourself to achieve the American dream. There is also a whole lot of taxpayer dollars that are being wasted to print things in multiple languages...why waste it there when the solution is simple by adapting? I also consider it ignorant that certain people come here and expect things to be the same from where they came from and refuse to adapt. I cannot communicate with someone unless they make that effort to assimilate into society...and one way to assimilate is to learn the chief language of English. I should not have to rely on three years of Spanish in high school to communicate with someone when I live in the nation that has English as its chief language, along with more than two thirds of the states declaring English the official language in their Constitution (California being one of them). I have no problem learning another language since it helps when you travel abroad but there are some people who come here not making the effort to learn English so that they have a successfl life. It is very hard to achieve success here if you do not know English. It is hard to participate in the democratic process....now ballots may be printed in multiple languages but looking at bills online/legislation, listening to debates (unless sponsored by Univision), contacting your elected officials, are all in English. I even have a couple friends in Canada who agree that English should be the official language of the United States.

Keeping your culture and adjusting/assimilating are two different things. I appreciate cultural diversity in this nation, that is, until it harms others and has a prejudice to it. I am talking about adjustment. Trust me, if you go live in a place like France and do not make the effort to adjust by learning French, they will spit on you. Take it from someone who has been to Paris. Now the French liked us because we made the effort for the four days we were there to speak French by bringing an English to French dictionary.

I don't care about characters speaking in native tongues on a show...what use is it if I cannot understand them and therefore see what their motives and what not are?

whoa...........................................

clearly you need to address some issues which cannot be addressed on this thread. and i must say i giggled while reading some of what you wrote. like for ex. i think it's not an inconvenience at all to hear different languages on the phone when you choose to press a number. it's more accommodating. i wonder how native americans feel about having to adjust to everything on their land? but anyway, back to soap operas using other languages. i think it's exciting and fun! i love it when soap families do that in daytime or primetime (ugly betty for ex.) since it shows how much their family is unified and how much they love their heritage and culture!

BRAVO to the writers that do this! a standing ovation to all of you!

I don't have to address anything to you, nor is there a law that says I have to do it. If you giggled over what I wrote, good for you. Do you honestly think I care one hoot if you did or not? You are a nobody to me and already proved yourself to me in another thread.

<<<it's more accommodating.>>>

LOL! Trust me, they will not accomodate you like that everywhere else, especially where I have been (France). There is no "To continue in French, press one" (However you say that in French)..."For English, press two".

giggle. for a thread about your distaste for the use of 2 languages in a phone recording, you misunderstood english. what i meant was everything you wrote has issues that need to be addressed in another forum since it would help you. a lot. as for the french, all the french people i associate or work with actually want to learn english more and are open to learning new languages.

but back to the topic, it would be great if characters spoke in other languages when they meet with their clientele. for ex. the forresters are designers on b&b. they had extras who played royalty from saudi arabia i think, so it would be great if eric and company talked to them in their native language. it is about pleasing their rich customers by appreciating their cultures after all!

I know exactly what you meant when you replied so I merely just said I do not have to answer you. That is true. If I need any help, I will be sure to take it up with someone who can spear me in the right direction, that not being you. Of course the French people you work with want to learn English...they live in a country where English is the chief language. At least they are being responsible with adjusting to a new land. I also see the French as people who love learning while others are not willing to expand their horizons as much.

McTavish wrote a lot of the Campbells stuff?

Wow.

How hard would be to have given Regina the stuff Nadine is doing cause GH is almost as bad as B&B when it comes to diversity.

When was the last time Kelly got to do...well...anything?

i don't think any soap can surpass b&b in terms of non-diversity. one of the most watched shows in the world should be more racially diverse.

but then again, there are soaps that continuously mistreat their minority characters (days). so what is worse?

How can a show about the fashion industry NOT have any gay characters?!

Would it have killed Brad Bell to bring on a new fierce gay fashion house to replace Spectra?

I agree. AW is a great actress and seems like she could play drama and comedy well. I could also see her and Tyler C working well together and having chem. Nadine is rather pointless, even tho i do love her and the actress. Hell, you know what woulda been hot? Lainey & Nikolas. Lainey could be helping Nikolas try to deal with things and fall for him just like Nadine has done.

I agree, however at the same time B&B is already female heavy and the few males they do have have about 4 woman each to play off, not to say that they couldnt have a lesbia or two (hell Felicia! Donna!..). I also always felt like they should have made Thomas Forrester gay. I do think thats a big reason why soaps dont have a lot of gay people, because they not only need one, but then more and more for them to hook up with.

Spectra so should have been taken over with by a gay.

Didnt B&B have a black character around the time Jessica & Dylan were on?

Be careful, JP, or his truly will swoop in and call you a racist
