Wolf drives a hybrid to NBC

Exec, Hudgins team for medical-legal show

Dick Wolf has set up his first project under NBC chairman Ben Silverman, teaming with "Friday Night Lights" scribe David Hudgins for a medical-legal hybrid. Untitled project, from Wolf Films and Universal Media Studios, will be a character-based procedural revolving around two brothers who are senior partners in a medical malpractice law firm. One of the siblings will be a doctor.

Structure of the skein will allow Wolf and Hudgins to tell medically themed stories without using a hospital setting. It will allow scribes to explore big issues such a medical ethics, how diseases should be handled and the impact of medical decisions on families.

Wolf Films development topper Nena Rodrigue is overseeing the project, with Hudgins set to write the pilot script. Script is not just the first from Wolf Films picked up under Silverman, it's also the first Wolf project for new Peacock development chief Teri Weinberg.

Hudgins brings more than his writing resume to the potential skein. Until about five years ago, he made his living as a lawyer specializing in medical malpractice suits.

He made the transition to TV writing with "Everwood," spending three seasons on the WB drama. He joined the staff of "FNL" last season.

NBC's purchase of the project comes after Wolf Films snagged six Emmys at this weekend's Creative Arts ceremonies -- one for "Law & Order: SVU" and five for "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

A Wolf Films spokesman declined to comment on the NBC sale, citing the company's policy against discussing development.
