PHILADELPHIA -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning, co-owner Roy Jackson said.

Barbaro stormed to victory at the 132nd Derby last May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

He was the heavy favorite two weeks later at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore, but broke his leg and never fully recovered in the eight-plus months since.

He nearly died last summer, but made a miraculous recovery, albeit a temporary one. He slowly got better until recent weeks, when his health declined again.

The poor horse....he became a celebrity to all of us here in Kentucky. He will be missed. It's so sad. :(

The people in Philly are in a dep mourning. I don't really get it. But our teams suck and he was a winner.

I had the pleasure of seeing Barbaro win the Derby, and the heartbreak of watching him falter in the Preakness. I'm so sad for his owners.

It has to do with his being such a favorite by so many people. And all the suffering he went through. He became everyone's favorite horse.
