The soap opera writers' discussion
I want to discuss a facet of the career of Agnes Nixon. She never belonged to the writers' union, and, therefore, she was able to continue with her storylines and as the executive producer when the other shows were being written by others that their regular writers. When the big strike came in 1966, she was writing Another World. Did Another World continue during the time that most of the other shows were preempted by primetime reruns, or did the show leave the airwaves with most of the other shows? I know that Dark Shadows continued by obtaining a waiver for the writer's union. (although actor Robert Gerringer, who played Dr. Woodard, still refused to appear due to one of the unions was striking. Mr. Gerringer was later replaced with actor Peter Turgeon.) How did the show get this waiver from the writers' union?

Mr. O'Brien and Ms. Rowland played a romantic couple twice - on The Secret Storm (as Kip and Amy) and on The Doctors (as Steve and Carolee).

I have wondered the same thing too. Ms. de Vegh (Anne #1) was said to have been terrified to be on television, and swore that if she survived the first episode that she would not return for a second. I wonder if Ms. Miles, a veteran of The Edge of Night (which Ms. Nixon is said to have watched) had auditioned for the role of Anne or just was available after the departure of Ms. de Vegh. I do know that Ms. Nixon created the role of Kate Martin for Kay Campbell (who had worked with Ms. Nixon on The Guiding Light and who had appeared for four years on The Edge of Night before her retirement), but she was unable to hire Ms. Campbell for the role. I also wonder if Ms. Campbell had not come out of her retirement if the role of Kate would have been written off All My Children.

One more addition to Thom Christopher: He was one of the gangsters on Ryan's Hope who shot up the bar. He was barely recognizable, yet, at the same time, it was clearly Mr. Christopher.

I seem to remember that Jenny and Brad lived in the carriage house at Llanview. I cannot remember if that is where Tony lived, but I think that it is. Tony may have moved to an adjoining apartment to his restaurant (Tony's Place), but that building burned down, didn't it? I am also thinking that Joe and Vicki lived in the Carriage House. (At least they were living there when I started watching the show in 1976 at the time of Victor's "death." ) Dorian remained in Llanview until she remarried (to Herb Callison), and she had to move out of Llanview. Vicki and her husband (I cannot remember if she were married to Joe or Clint) moved back into Llanview. The carriage house was not seen (in my memory) until Joey and Kelly moved into it. What could the "mysterious circumstances" be that led to the failure to renew the contract of Jacqueline Courtney? Could it have been that Paul Rauch was about to be hired as the new executive producer?

Lee Goodart was DEFINATELY on One Life to Live. He was an attorney. I think that Blair was his client.

I am nearly sure that Lee Lawson also played on some radio serials. Also, I was thinking that Roger Newman had appeared later than 1967 on The Edge of Night. My understanding (which may be wrong) was that he was seen during the time of Jonah Lockwood and Tango Humphries. Again, I may be wrong.

I stand corrected about Mr. Washam's involvement with Another World. By the way, before becoming a writer, Mr. Washam was a stage manager in the theatre. I think that he and Ms. Bancroft may have met in the theatre when she was the stand-by for Claudette Nivens in Plaza Suite by Neil Simon.

I think that this promotion for All My Children aired in the early part of the summer of 1971 around the time that A World Apart was cancelled. I think that she replaced Joanna Miles as Anne around June or July. I think that Ms. Barcroft's husband was already on the show's writing staff. (He had worked with Agnes Nixon on Another World.) And, later, their son Ian would join the cast as "Little Phillip" Tyler. (Ms. Barcroft and Grayson Hall both appeared on ABC soap operas that were written by their husband, only Ms. Hall was cast on Dark Shadows prior to the time the show hired her husband as a writer.) I cannot remember if Paul Martin had been shown yet (prior to the recast of Anne). I do know that Paul Rabat was playing Paul at the time of Joe and Ruth's wedding. Paul was soon recast with William Mooney as the new Paul.

The soap opera writers' discussion
For her new shows such as One Life to Live, All My Children, and Loving, Agnes Nixon tended to use actors or actors' spouces who had appeared on Another World and The Guiding Light when she was writing them (Patricia Roe, Doris Belack, Joseph Gallison, Gillian Spenser, Judith Barcroft, Robin Strasser, Kay Campbell, Ernest Graves, Shepherd Strudwick, etc.). However, Val Dufour auditioned for the role of Lars Bogart when it was being recast, and he lost the role. I think that most writers have their favorite performers. Francesca James and Candice Earley were two actresses whose work Ms. Nixon loved.

Of course, I meant to type Jill #2 on The Secret Storm - not Somerset. And the only Jill on Somerset WAS Susan MacDonell (or however her name is correctly spelled.)

The soap opera writers' discussion
I watched the clips of Another World above. I have some comments and questions: Comment #1: That was the first time that I had ever seen Audra Lindley as Liz Matthews and Barbara Rodell as Lee Randelph. Comment #2: I think that Barbara Rodell has grown prettier as she has gotten older. I was not overwhelmed by her beauty here or when she was playing Jill #2 on Somerset. Question #1: Who was the actor playing the minister? At first, I thought that he looked like Peter Brandon, but I knew that he was not. I also think that it may have been actor William Daniels. Question #2: I did not see Jim Matthews there. I may have missed him. Was this between actors in the role of Jim? Question #3: Who gave away the bride? I heard a man say that she was being given "by her mother and I," but I do not know who the man was. Comment #3: Wasn't Judith Barcroft a beautiful and graceful actress? I saw her in the magazines during this time, but my first real time in seeing her was during the final weeks of A World Apart when she was announcing that she was coming to All My Children play Ann Tyler St. Cyr on commercials for All My Children).. Comment #4: Who was writing the show when Walter was written off the show? Was it Agnes Nixon, Robert Cenedella, or Harding Lemay? Comment #5: These episodes had so many performers who had previously appeared on The Edge of Night: Constance Ford, Audra Lindley, Ann Wedgeworth, Val Dufour, and Sam Groom.

Thank you for your admirable work. Joanna Roos, though, also played Mattie Lane Grimsley on The Edge of Night temporarily, probably following the death of Peggy Allenby. This show was not a soap opera, but was serial-like (The Waltons). I know that Peter Brandon had a recurring role on it, I think as Ben's father-in-law. I suppose that Victoria Dana, the character that you listed Ms. Roos as having played, was the grandmother of Phoebe Smith? I am now interested in some of the character performers: Jay Gregory, Brooks Rogers, Burt Douglas, Carol Richards, Nat Pollen, Grace Matthews, William Griffis, and the actor who played Dr. Clater on All My Children.

Did the character of Missy appear on the first episodes of Another World, or was she introduced in the early weeks or months after the show's premiere?
