    I doubt they did.

It reminds me of an article I read about how UPN and the WB filled their roster with many shows/sitcoms with a majority black cast, most of which brought high ratings.  After these networks cultivated audiences, then proceeded to 'transition' out of this by canceling many of these shows.

By the time both networks merged into the CW, with shows like Gossip Girl, the CW's programming bore little resemblance to it's network predecessors.

The only reason those networks even lasted as long as they did is because of the black audience giving them a strong boost. Every secondary network had a black night. WB was Sunday, UPN was Monday and FOX was Thursday. FOX had some popular content that wasn't primarily black that helped them stay afloat, but WB and UPN really relied on black viewers to keep on the air initially.

In some ways it was worse, considering the relatively brief time vs. the lasting damage the characterization and storyline did.

Marshall Traver was the first black man in ATWT's history who was allowed to show unbridled sexuality.  As much as I loved Detective Roy Franklin, the show made him lose Jessica's affections to Duncan McKechnie (a character who was allowed to be ultra-masculine, highly sexual, wild, mysterious and yes, a bit dangerous)  and people kept complaining about how boring they thought safe Ben Harris was and similar to Neil/KSJ, many began to equate this somehow with the fault of the actor, rather than the writing.

Making Marshall a rapist sent a very clear message that not only was it dangerous to show that type of open sexuality in a black man but, if it involved a highly educated, refined and savvy black man--that type of unrestrained sexuality was downright criminal and had to be met with the ultimate form of punishment.  You never had another black character on the show with that type of agency for the rest of the show's run.  The damage was irreversible.

This is about a completely different type of show, but some years back I read an article about Eric Monte and What's Happening!! and how the character Rerun came to be. According to him a pilot of Cooley High was not green lit because the character of Cochise was too handsome and they didn't want the white female audience developing crushes, so the show was retooled and Rerun was created in that character's place. So black men actually being appealing on television was and to a certain extent still is a problem.

  3. From a business standpoint it would be wise for the show to want to maintain or regain black viewership. Black viewers are huge demographic that networks do not tap into for the most part. Bill Bell seemed to understand this but no other producers and writers really seemed to understand this. Of course black viewers didn't just watch for the black characters because there are plenty of them who love many of the white characters, but it still was the representation of black characters as something else other than just background or supporting types that helped build a black audience. No other demographic is going to replace the black audience. Latino viewers have for years had a well developed set of programming and entertainment because of Spanish language networks. Sure, there is BET and a few other smaller entertainment outlets for black viewers but those are far less developed. All that said soaps have lost so many viewers across the board that it's probably a lost cause to even attempt to draw in more black viewers.

  4. There are quite a few black people on Twitter talking about the impact the character had on them and it's clear that he was iconic. It's always been clear that Y&R has been the top soap for black viewers, but seeing some of these tweets really drives home how iconic this character was for many people. It is just television but I do believe that positive black characters have and can inspire younger generations to aspire to be successful or at least know that they don't have to fit into traditional stereotypes.

  5. This is probably somewhat anecdotal, but when I was at an immigration forum last year one of the panelist was discussing campaigning and said that younger Hispanic prefer communications in English while the older people are more partial to Spanish, so it's not like the younger people aren't learning English. With that said, the comment he made about people being worried about having brown grandchildren was even more terrible. People who worry about such a thing are truly racist.

  6. A lot of people do not realize that Speaker of the House is an actual job and not a spokesperson just to go on television, but fortunately most of the Democratic caucus in the House understands that and that is why Pelosi was voted into the position again. You have to know how to maneuver to be Speaker.

  7. That table looks like gas and heartburn waiting to happen. He paid for the food himself, but it's a cheap spread for someone who is supposed to have so much money. And it's seriously worth pondering if he bit off of any of those burgers and put them back in the container.

  8. Sanders' disturbing essay about rape is indicative of what type of mindset he has toward women and why certain types gravitate toward him. A whole lot of his support came from lonely outsider types of men who had supported Ron Paul (who is far different than Sanders). Some of them has even gone after Kamala Harris by saying that she slept her way to the top. An incredibly negative bunch of people, so it is indeed not surprising to read that there was harassment on the campaign.

Among the allegations is that an individual who worked for the Harris campaign coordinated an effort to collect and fill in, or discard, the ballots of Democratic voters who might have otherwise voted for McCready. Several of the affidavits come from elderly African American voters. It is illegal to take someone else’s ballot, whether to turn it in or discard it.

It was only a matter of time before someone decided to actually tamper with votes. The good thing about this is that the bipartisan board of elections was unanimous in refusing to certify the election and wants the investigation.

    I'm sorry to hear that.

Thank you. It's really stressful on the community, but people are stepping up to support the victims. There was a procession for the sheriff's deputy that was killed and a lot of people were on the corner as it drove by on it's way to the freeway.
