Working out at the moment and fell down a Y&R video hole and came across the memories.

I can't believe they only had ONE scene.

Sigh! A time period of goodness where Nikki, Victoria, Jill, Diane and Phyllis were all walking around town to pick a fight with someone. LOL

Victor loves Nikki, but he doesn't respect her. IMO in his heart he considers her a child. He had respect for Lorie, Ashley, Hope, and Sabrina.

    THIS!!!

I always liked the Nikki scene above, where she flicks her Jabot business card on Victor's desk as she struts out the door, and he barks out, "Take your damn card with you!" lol

While a little bit harder to digest as a business woman than Jill - who had the streetsmarts and dedication to BECOME someone in 80s and 90s - Nikki entering the business world under Kay Alden's penmenship felt like a natural evolution.

Sorry I didn’t see this but the main thing about Phyllis during that time period was not only her paranoia and also spinning her great web of lies and deception as foundation. Phyllis pulled her own intriguing supporting cast with her lover Peter Garrett to make Danny jealous while Dr. Tim Reid and Sasha participated in her nefarious schemes to make everything look good.

I think Phyllis' appeal came from DANNY and CRICKET both being holier than thou for so long that it was so delicious for them to have an adversary who was so much fun while being a "baddy". And as you pointed out: all sidekick characters were great in their own way. I'd add Joanie the nanny who had the most excruciating pieces of dialogue with "Mrs. Romalotti". During most of Phyllis' first run, Nikki was held hostage at the Newman ranch by the writers similiar to Phyllis being stuck in her living room 24/7 but it was light and day in regards to the character having appeal and driving story.

If anything, I would have revealed that Brad was born into a Mafia family and had changed his identity in order to escape from that life.  They could have even said he had been overweight and homely-looking before he underwent reconstructive surgery, which would explain why the man was always so damn in love with himself, lol.

I think we all agree with you that there were at least 1001 better storyline ideas of what we got as the reliquary mess. LMAO

I always wondered why he needed to be recast - was it something he did? - or they decided they needed "singing Thorne" and Norcross couldn't sing (that's what I assumed)?

I read rumors that alcohol was the reason for him getting fired very sudden. And they brought in Jeff Trachta because he had screen tested for Jack Abbott on Y&R (which of course went to Peter Bergman).

    Both Jeff and Winsor are looking very 'preserved' at this point where as Clayton is looking way more natural;

Interesting because of the three Clayton originally had that 'Ken doll' look.

    True!!!

Winsor Harmon will always be Thorne for me…

    Story-wise for sure.

Jeff Trachta was perfect for the 80s musical romance (even though the story took place in the 1990) with Macy, but Harmon had the strongest stories.

Nowadays, Harmon looks like Heather Locklear. And this is not a compliment. It would not be pretty to watch him on B&B anymore.

As for Taylor, why did they change Ashford for Hamilton, any ideas?

I don't think there was any real reason except that the writers had not made up their mind about details of Taylor's backstory yet. Take Saul and Darla as well - who walked around in LA without a last name for years. In an 1992 Saul introduced himself to Karen als Saul "Feinstein" - in later credits it would be Saul "Feinberg".

I think that Felicia na Zack leaving town was a bad decision. They made a good couple kind of rebels both of them. Would have enjoyed watching some more.

I liked ALL of Felicia's pairing but not this one. The story with Ganz was just too bad. Actually the whole Hamilton faily angles leave rather dry and cold. Just yesterday I say the big reunion at the chapel between Taylor/Jack/Zach. IMO, the writing was just not there for any of this. Maybe it's because Taylor's backstory was always developed as the story progressed unlike other Bill Bell characters who are clearly defined. The only thing established for Taylor was that she met Storm at college and has an ex husband. Blake failed to the extent that he was nothing more but a plot device to stir up trouble for Ridge&Brooke and Zach/Jack have too little connection to Taylor's actual on-screen life. Taylor/Jack were an okay father/daughter eventually, especially when she came back from her first death.

I am currently watching episodes from summer 1991, and one thing just struck me.

In the history of B&B, we have several times had a storyline where a woman wanting to wait until marriage to have sex, or "save herself for the right guy", is seen as a sign that she has morals/values/character strength/whatever. The same expectations have never once been expressed for any male character.

But these episodes in 1991 is the first (only?) time I've seen the other side of these gender stereotypes. Jake and Felicia are actually breaking up because of Jake's inexperience! The story goes that since Jake hasn't been with any other woman besides Felicia (due to his childhood abuse), he has actually missed out on important developmental milestones, so both of them agree that he needs to go be with other women in order to become a whole, healthy person (even though he loves Felicia and has a sexually satisfying relationship with her).

While a plot twist in the rather short run of Jake, I thought this was kind of refreshing and honest that a man his age wondered what was "out there". There were some tennis students who made a play for him after all. This strokes your ego...

Besides that, though, I think the show did an incredible job of incorporating Sheila in the Forrester world.

There were some terrific angles. As someone else pointed out before: Sheila fake-befriending Brooke and teaming up with Stephanie was AMAZING for instance. And the romance with Eric is heartwearming, even though Miss Carter is not that ar from her slightly too tight grip with which she pursued Scott Grainger.

You're right about CBS promoting the hell out of the crossover. There are many promos on YouTube. And of course Y&R was No 1 so it made sense to stub Y&R viewers into checking out B&B. However, outside the US nobody knew about Sheila. And by 1992 B&B was just sooo big worldwide that this should have been considered somewhat more.

  9. Major THANK YOU to our benefactor. It is indeed a dream come true to have the chance to (re)watch these episodes...

I'm currently at #1382. Lauren Fenmore has arrived in Los Angeles and Sheila's wonderful new life in L.A. is about to crash and burn. But hey, she just started therapy with Dr. Garvin who - while still a live - is not yet having his own office and offering consultations in Taylor's office and the Forrester Creations infirmary. Highly unusual for the early 1990s, but so common for soaps in 2021 where few people have their own set. LOL

For those who reached this far or further: what's your assessment on the show tackling Sheila's backstory?

I'm kind of torn. While Sheila is a fascinating character (her two-sided relationships with JUDY, Brooke and Taylor) and Kim Brown is playing all the beats to it, I don't think B&B viewers were given a proper introduction to Sheila's story on Y&R. The first flashbacks just started, but I think this is little to little (and late) if you NEVER knew Sheila before. Nowadays we know all that is coming and have seen the Y&R baby switch backstory (if only in flashbacks). The few references to Y&R in those first 4 months of Sheila's life in L.A. were too vague and ambigous to paint the full picture, IMO. However, I just realized that if Brad Bell gets his act together: KImberlin Brown will celebrated her 30th anniversary on B&B this May! She was gone for many years in between but this is still a HIGHLY unexpected milestone anniversary.

  10. Interesting points. I always though that the show wanted THIS actor and Jeff Connaway was only willing to sign a shortterm contract as he was somewhat a "name actor". Terri Ann Linn also wanted out if remember correctly. That's why Mick&Kristen didn't go any further and left rather abruptly in January 1990.

Maybe Nicholas?  The whole thing is kind of a blur to me, as there weren't any real "surprises" in it.  The Gary Dawson character was pretty quiet and assuming, and Victoria was at her LOUDEST and most STRIDENT then.  I'd kind of hoped that Gary wouldn't turn out to be the stalker, that he and Victoria would develop a relationship, and he'd teach her to be a little quieter and less bossy.  But nope, he was the stalker.  When the duct tape came out, that was the highlight of the storyline, lol.

I liked the storyline mostly due to acting of Ricky Paull and Heather Tom. I admit that Gary's boss (?) Ross as the red hearing, scapegoat culprit, was pretty transparent and it was a rather luke-warm surprise when it turned out to be Gary. If I recall right, the inital builup with the magazine shrine wall of Vickie's centerfold being shown in a lot of episodes with some spooky music was cool.

I remember Gary putting some duct tape over her loud, screeching mouth (a much appreciated gesture!), but I don't recall him raping her.

Hahaha - Vickie sure had a biiiiig mouth back then. I also remember the show to tackle the serious angst and psychological issues Victoria was suffering from due to Gary's stalking and the tree house finale. However, she in my memory also saved before things got REALLY bad. Was it Cole who rescued her? I can't remember.

You were always wondering if and to what extent was it possible that Clarke, on some level was capable of true love of another person?

Spot on assessment. He definitely wanted wealth, power and recognition, yet sometimes it seemed that he was also able to love sincerely. Sometimes at least. LOL
