Primetime Soaps
If you've been following the daytime ratings threads, you've seen me posting the weekly daytime ratings for 1979-1989. For primetime fans, the primetime charts for some of the 1960's and 1970's are arriving long before the daytime charts will, so if anyone has a specific week of primetime soap or other primetime show they would like the chart posted for, let me know. Here's the primetime chart of the night that "Days of Our Lives" premiered, 11/8/65...

Ratings from the 60's
Unfortunately, the primetime ratings are coming in first for the 1960's and 1970's, so we still have to wait awhile for the daytime batch, but in the meantime, here's a look at the primetime ratings on the day that "Days of Our Lives" premiered, 11/8/65...

You're in luck, since there was some overlap at the beginning of September 1987. There's a few weeks where they issued books with the old numbers, but also issued books with the new numbers, and the results are quite different between the two. I was only going to post the "official" numbers when it came time for that, but since you asked, I will post both sets of numbers: the old system vs. the new system, so your questions will be answered then once we get to September 1987. PREEMPTION DATA CONFIRMED FOR THE TWO "MISSING WEEKS" IN 1991...ALL PREEMPTION DATA TO BE AVAILABLE FOR JANUARY 1979-MAY 1992 (except one week in 1981) Santa Barbara had one preemption during the two consecutive "missing weeks" of 5/20/91 and 5/27/91. A quick check of newspapers confirms that SB was preempted on 5/27/91 for NBA Playoffs. So, with that, we have the full preemption data for all soaps from January 1979-May 1992 (missing just the week of 8/24/81). Exact data on PARTIAL preemptions will not be available for the fast weekly weeks (4 per year) from 1979-1987, but all FULL preemptions will now be known for soap history fans! Telecasts (should all be 15 more telecasts if no preemptions during the weeks of 5/20/91, 5/27/91, 6/3/91) As of 5/17/91-6/7/91 AMC 159-174 AW 159-174 ATWT 165-180 BB 164-179 DAYS 158-173 GH 161-176 GL 160-175 LOV 161-176 OLTL 160-175 SB 157-171 (1 preemption during the two missing weeks of 5/20/91 and 5/27/91) YR 168-183

UPDATED CHART FOR WEEKS OF 11/11/85 & 11/18/85: With this missing page arriving as part of the update, AMC, AW, ATWT and CAP stations & clearances are now available for the weeks of 11/11/85 & 11/18/85. Here is the updated chart, also now posted in place of the old one: I can only speak for "Days", but "Days" has only been preempted 3 times for Christmas (and that is counting if it falls on a weekend too, no preemptions on 12/22-12/23-12/24-12/26-12/27): The 3 Christmas Day preemptions were in 1997, 2000 and 2006. So, "Days" has pretty much always aired a new episode on Christmas Day. https://jason47.com/days/preemptions.html

"MISSING WEEK" 12/14/87-12/18/87 Preemptions (confirmed via Telecasts as of 12/13 & 12/27): The Christmas Day preemptions for all ABC & CBS soaps means their telecast numbers should go up by 9 during the missing week, and the NBC soaps should go up by 10 telecasts, which they all do. So there were NO full preemptions for the missing week of 12/14-12/18/87. SOAP TELECASTS: As of 12/13-As of 12/27 AMC 55-64 (1 preemption 12/25) AW 51-61 ATWT 58-67 (1 preemption 12/25) BB 57-66 (1 preemption 12/25) DAYS 54-64 GH 55-64 (1 preemption 12/25) GL 58-67 (1 preemption 12/25) LOV 55-64 (1 preemption 12/25) OLTL 53-62 (1 preemption 12/25) RYAN 55-64 (1 preemption 12/25) SB 52-62 YR 58-67 (1 preemption 12/25)

I just looked in a newspaper from 10/17/87, and the World Series schedule is listed as all night games (all 8:25PM ET or 8:30PM ET starts), except for Game 6, if needed, which was a Saturday 4PM ET start. So it looks like 1986 was the last time they did regular daytime games for the World Series. As for the stock market crash, we don't have the partial preemptions for that week, just full preemptions. All the soaps aired 5 episodes that week, so at most, they were possibly partially preempted for stock market news stories.

PREEMPTION DATA CAN BE FIGURED OUT FROM THE FOUR "MISSING" WEEKS... Good news, about the preemption data at least, for the 4 missing weeks from 1987 and 1991. I realized we can compare the # of telecasts in the prior book to the # of telecasts in the next book and figure out if any soaps were preempted during the "missing week." For example, we don't have the 10/19/87-10/23/87 book, but by comparing the # of telecasts in the 10/12/87 book, and seeing if all soaps had 10 additional telecasts in the 10/26/87 book, that would confirm if anything was preempted in the 10/19/87 book. All of the soaps had 10 additional telecasts in their telecast column between 10/12 to 10/26, so that confirms there were NO full preemptions of any soaps during the missing week of 10/19/87. She was mostly focused on Our House. They used a body double for awhile while she was laying in her hospital bed. She'd tape multiple episodes a day (back when they didn't do that much) and then they put her on the island with Orpheus so she could quickly tape all of her stuff without involving a majority of the cast. These pages (the third section of the book) just tell us what the preemption reasons were. The first section of the book gives us the main info (the affiliates/clearance/days & times aired/demos), so that's where you find out when a show did NOT air. The second section of the book are the pages you've seen before (the weekly charts).

Yes, that's correct. You pretty much will still know why a show was preempted as well, but some of the time it will just say a generic special report. I was more speaking about myself personally...doing the charts for 1988-1992 will take a little more effort as opposed to how I was used to doing them from 1978-1987 (the way I preferred). But, yes, pretty much all of the info is still there (it just takes inference now, since they don't give the exact start time of the special report on that page, then you see that OLTL stopped airing from 2:22-2:27, so then it's obvious that's when the special report aired). I won't be getting to 1991 for awhile, but for the War preemptions, here's a sample of three weeks from February 1991. I don't know what the "average minute audience rating" numbers are, but I am just posting these for the preemptions data: Week of 2/4/91-2/10/91: Week of 2/11/91-2/17/91: Week of 2/18/91-2/24/91:

They don't give the duration, start time or end time of the special reports as of September 1987. ABC gives the start time at least, but not the end time. All they do is say a special report took place during the 130-2PM time frame or 2-230PM time frame, etc... And it doesn't even say what day of the week it happened. Just that there was a special report at sometime between Monday to Friday between 2-230PM. So, that leaves us with the program pages, which list what times the shows aired, so if a show didn't air from 212-218PM on a Tuesday, then you just match it up to whatever special report is listed in that time frame. That's funny you asked about this now. As I said earlier in the thread, once the Nielsen books changed in September 1987, they no longer easily list all the preemption data on a 5-page range. Now, it's listed by every half-hour time period for the week. To give you a quick example of a regular two-month period (say November/December 1989), that would usually involve special report preemptions listed on maybe 10-15 pages total throughout the 2 month period (an average of 2-3 pages per issue). I just checked March 1991, the month after the war ended, and the entire month of March 1991 had only two pages with special report preemptions, However, for the January/February 1991 issues, due to the war, there were 95 pages over that 2-month period involved which listed special reports about the war. Now, of course that's for the entire time periods of the weeks (not just daytime), but just thought it was a good way to show you exactly how many special reports there were during those two months. And they no longer list the duration, start time or end time of the special reports, so you sort of just have to piece it together from what times the programs are listed as not airing. ABC, howveer, is nice enough to at least list the start time of its special reports in its program title of the special report, so we do know the exact start times of all the ABC special reports.

Ratings from the 80's
NIELSEN RATINGS UPDATE: Good news for daytime ratings fans! Confirmation has arrived for the final "missing" weeks. All of the remaining missing weeks still needed from 1987-1990 have been found except for two weeks in late 1987. So, as we start to finish up this project, the final stats are this: From January 1979-May 1992, there will only be 3 weeks missing full data (1 from 1981 and 2 from 1987). At the moment, it looks like two weeks from 1991 are still missing, but those weeks are covered by the Soap Opera Weekly charts, so only two weeks from 1991 will be missing the additional data not covered in Soap Opera Weekly (affiliates, clearance, demos, preemptions).
