DAYS: Happy 50th Anniversary, Suzanne Rogers (First two scripts)
FROM THE VAULT: 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK: MAGGIE TELLS MICKEY WHAT HAPPENED TO HER PARENTS... Here's a look back at Maggie telling Mickey what happened to her parents. It was the third episode Suzanne Rogers appeared in, Episode # 1951, and aired on August 27, 1973. MAGGIE: I was brought up to believe that's what life is all about...people caring about people. MICKEY: You must have had very special parents. MAGGIE (nodding): Gentle, soft-spoken, church-going, heart-warming. Never an unkind word about anyone. They never turned down a stranger. MICKEY: As you didn't. MAGGIE: You have them to thank. MICKEY: I take it they're dead. MAGGIE: Yes, nine years ago. We were on our way into town, the three of us, in our pickup. It was my birthday. I was seventeen. I'd been invited to a dance that night. Dad said he wanted to buy me a dress, the prettiest one we could find. It was halfway between here and town...a crossroad...we were hit broadside by a semi. They were both killed instantly. MICKEY (referring to her crutches): Then you were left with those? MAGGIE (pause): I thought about selling the farm, but when I asked myself...to go where? To do what? Close myself off from the world and feel sorry for myself? (pause, then warmly referring to her crutches) Today they're the two best friends I have. I wouldn't go anywhere without them. Thanks to them I can do everything I ever did, it just takes a little longer, but I have time. MICKEY (beat, he looks at her): Maggie, I can't tell you what an inspiration it's been to meet you.

DAY'S Arleen Sorkin has passed away at the age of 67
ADDITIONAL TIE-IN BETWEEN "DAYS" CHARACTER CALLIOPE AND DC COMICS CHARACTER HARLEY QUINN... I was just told this "fun fact" I did not know. Harley Quinn, who was inspired by "Days of Our Lives" character Calliope Jones (the late Arleen Sorkin) has a pet monkey whose name, in tribute to the inspiration, is Calliope! DAY'S Arleen Sorkin has passed away at the age of 67
ARLEEN SORKIN IN LOVING MEMORY OCTOBER 14, 1955-AUGUST 24, 2023 (Calliope Jones, 1984-1990, 1992, 2006, 2010) "Days of Our Lives" actress Arleen Sorkin has passed away. Sorkin died on Thursday, August 24, per The Hollywood Reporter. She was 67. Sorkin played the lovable Calliope Jones on "Days of Our Lives" from 1984-1990 and in return guest stints in 1992, 2006 and 2010. She was paired, for most of her run, with John de Lancie's Eugene Bradford, providing "Days" fans great comic relief during the late 1980's. The duo appeared on an episode of "The Newlywed Game" (on "Days") in 1986. Calliope memorably had her dog, Martha, have a dog wedding in 1987. Her performance in a fantasy sequence on "Days of Our Lives" in February 1989 inspired the creation of the DC comics character Harley Quinn, a role Sorkin would later voice on "Batman: The Animated Series" from 1992-1994. Sorkin co-hosted "America's Funniest People" from 1990-1992 and was a co-writer of the 1997 Jennifer Aniston movie "Picture Perfect." She was nominated for two supporting actress Daytime Emmys in 1988 and 1989 for her role as Calliope, and won four Soap Opera Digest Awards. She leaves behind her husband, Christopher Lloyd (the co-creator of "Modern Family", not the actor) and her two sons, Eli and Owen. Ratings from the 50's.
I'll start this off with an "eerie" find! When I was doing research tonight, I happened to find this page in a 1954 magazine called Broadcasting Telecasting. I couldn't believe the headline, mentioning CBS, Y&R and B&B. I thought I had stepped into The Twilight Zone for a moment, but then was happy to see that was not the case! For those following along with my 1970's and 1980's ratings posts, here's a treat for 1954 ratings fans: 1954 SAMPLE INFO.... There are a few 1954 issues, from microfilm, very hard to see, but from what I can make out, this is a sample of what would be available in 1954 issues. I think back then they only gave the 2-week average of ratings, but they actually gave program coverage to an extra decimal point! I think I am typing up the correct rating data, it's in quite a different format than the ones I am used to. Also, the NBC data is pretty much useless as it can't be read on the charts in the microfilm. ABC & Dumont do not seem to have programmed anything against the CBS soaps, so that's why they have such a big share. Search for Tomorrow, if I'm reading it right, had a 79 share! And, the sponsors are listed as well, so actually you get more data points in the 1950's issues than in the 1970's (although only 2-week averages of ratings, not the weeklies). The 1955 stuff should be all readable, so at least we know now every data point (and more) are around in 1954 (in 2-week average format). Weeks of 4/12/54-4/16/54 & 4/19/54-4/23/54: Valiant Lady...Coverage: 90.2...Rating: 10.2...Share: 53.9...Sponsors: General Mills (M/W/F) & Toni Gillette Razor Co. (Tu/Th); (Aired M-F) Love of Life...Coverage...93.0...Rating: 14.5...Share: 70.0...Sponsor: American Home Products; (Aired M-F) Search for Tomorrow...Coverage...96.0...Rating: 17.2...Share: 79.0...Sponsor: Procter & Gamble; (Aired M-F) Guiding Light...Coverage...95.8...Rating: 15.7...Share: 73.9...Sponsor: Procter & Gamble; (Aired M-F) Brighter Day...Coverage: 79.9...Rating: 6.5...Share: 41.3...Sponsor: Procter & Gamble; (Aired M-F) Portia Faces Life...Coverage: 31.6...Rating: 5.4...Share: 32.9...Sponsor: General Foods Corp.; (Aired M-F) Secret Storm...Coverage: 56.5...Rating: 5.4...Share: 31.7...Sponsor: American Home Products; (Aired M/W/F) (Sustaining Tu/Th) Hawkins Falls...Coverage: 80.1...Rating: N/A...Share: 17.8...Sponsors: Wesson Oil & Snowdrift (all but Mon-Week 1) & S.O.S Co. (Mon Week 1); (Aired M/W/F Week 1; Aired W Week 2) Three Steps to Heaven...Coverage: 87.8...Rating: N/A...Share: 21.4...Sponsor: Procter & Gamble; (Aired M-F Week 1; Aired M-W Week 2) Based on the Soap Opera Encyclopedia, Woman with a Past (CBS) also aired at this time, but is not listed at all in the ratings book. The CBS 4PM time slot, when it aired, is blank on the chart. In another book I found, it says that Woman With a Past was "sustaining", meaning it did not get any rating. So that would be the reason it is not listed on the charts. Upon further research, I've found that Secret Storm was sustaining on Tue & Thu, that's why it's not listed as airing those days.

1978-1989 is available at the moment. The 1955-1977 data will be coming in more slowly, but over the next few years, that should be available. Just not sure when that will be. Also, not sure how far back the affiliate data goes (if they list that sort of thing in the 50s or 60s) but I believe it may go back to at least 1970, so you will have that info in the coming years.

Remember if you do those, Nielsen only counts the 48 weeks. The 4 "fast national" weeks don't count, and are only preliminary data, not the final #s, which may change a little.
