Katie (with EddieMan) found the tape of Margo offing Casey..and they were like, "Oh, that's sad...but she did what she needed to do," and that was the end. It could have been dramatic but..no. I didn't mind Katie that much either, though I enjoyed her best in her early trouble making days. She held her own with Hayes that great scene where Kim told her to walk away from Chris now if she isn't totally onboard...but I wasn't a regular watcher through most of Sheffer and beyond to really understand why people were annoyed with her.

ALL: Worst TWISTS
I thought I was the only one..that stupid ass mug that the actor would put on so you knew he was Stuart was annoying and offensive.

I can't believe McTrash screwed Gilly up by taking her out of Roger and the Spaulding's and having her chase after her own father..then McTavish tries to disguise it as a discussion on race by making her hot daddy a civil rights leader, when then shoots himself to frame Alan. Damn, McTavish was just begging to get that show cancelled. I know that they wimped out on pairing AM and Gilly (or is that what JFP wants us to believe so she could put him with her pet Sonia Santra...) but instead of this storyline, they should have paired her with Nick (did they have chemistry) and her Mom would be torn between her snobbery of having her daughter involved with a Spaulding with an issue of her daughter in a mixed race relationship. Alex could have accepted the mixed race thing ("I did live in Paris in the 60s dear...") but given the past antagonism with Gilly, be wary....but realizing that she had to let her son live his life (and gasp, show some growth.) England his still a piece of ass. I wish instead of Bridget and he getting together off screen they had them reunite during the Reva trial and then leave town happy. The begging of Bert's pathetic farwell....(funny that the last clip of the intro, which was Bert, is not Miss Sally, it really says a lot of what GL became in a short time.) I love that in the 80s..all of Mindy's boyfriends were matching her hair pouf for pouf!

God..I love that theme and the cheesy lyrics..I have a weird friend who if I ask how she is is will say..."Fine.....just living circles of ending strife..." and if I don't shut her up with go on with the whole song..then I have the damn theme in my head for the rest of the day. Ha...Zombie Mo breaking in the kitchen door to eat Lillian! It is weird...when other soap characters die its a "Oh, I will never recover " and next week everyone, including their lover has moved on...even when real people die their characters like Bert, Henry, H.B. its an episode or two and then move on, but this one was like real life...Nadine tells Bridget that the mayor was their, etc... So yea, I think they made it so intense that they were screaming "This is permanent, like in real life." I was watching a few scenes after the funeral...Blake telling Holly to get her ass together for this, Van forcing Lillian to get her ass inside so people won't talk and it would be all about the scandal and not Mo...and Bridget and Nadine in the attic...everyone had a brain and a heart (even Nadine is not acting as goofy as she did when Buzz returned...) and I forgot GL was so damn good at that time...plus I love Bridge's line to Nadine in her funeral dress "Nadine, my God, what happened to you, did you get hit on the head and suddenly get taste?"

I loved Hold on to Love...I am such a dork when I hear it in that slow version I kinda get..."verklempt" Whatever you say about JFP she knew music and there are some great scenes of Hold being played over a montage...a great one with Hamp on horn playing it...I just think it's GL...hold on to love is not just romantic love but for family or community or whatever. My second is whatever the theme is over the iconic Van/Nola coming down the stairs opening..but I HATED the cheap them and opening they replaced it with. The late 70s theme was so damn depressing!

I never understood why TPTB didn't do more with the 7th and 5th Street neighborhoods. Obviously 7th street was an inner ring area with the hospital across the street, and 5th street along with it. The most we saw was a bunch of cliched white characters in the diner and when Alan wanted to knock down 5th stteet....all proclaiming Buzz the King of 5th steet in really bad Greek accents. The first Hispanic family should not have been a mob family but a new family moving into the area with the Reardon's and Coopers reflecting on the changing neighborhood. Or instead of Mel...pairing Rick with a Latina who is fighting the Santos family for all the bad that they had done the community...(i.e. brining in drugs, prostitutes, strong arming biz owners...if your going to do a mob do it right.) and waking Chele up and putting Danny on the offense.

Yea, I think he felt about soaps like we all do about our jobs sometimes...its a way to keep a roof over our heads, we give total commitment even if it does get to be monotonous sometimes, and hopefully we can do something good and contribute once in a while. I will always like LB as during the height of the Dobson's obsession with having John on everyday, and moving Chris and Nancy to the side, so much so Wagner left and MEB put DM on recurring..he accepted his Emmy and thanked both Wagner and McLaughlin for lighting the torch for daytime excellence and showing him a good work ethic. It was WEIRD the John, who was connected to everyone just disappeared....no mention from Margo to Kim that John went to see Andy...weird.

I thought another interesting thing about GL that could be brought into the present day was that its core families, much more then say ATWT, were comprised of generations coming from immigrants, The Bauers, the Reardons, the Coopers and yes, unfortunately the Santos (which coulda shoulda been so much more of a latin family trying to make its mark in this country.) That was such an interesting premise which was basically ignored...the Bauer family should have been aspirational for immigrants as would Cooper and Reardon (who retained some of their blue collar background) with a new family coming in and mixing it up...the Spaulding's can stay as an example of WASP privilege "We have ours and we are damn well going to keep it" and well, I am sorry, dump the Lewis...they just don't fit into the theme (well Alex or India would say, "hillbillies" but...)

With a husband who was a broadway producers and years on the show..I don't think she really cared about the money, but more that she wanted to still contribute and be productive..so your right...work is important to us all and that is really humiliating if HS said that...making someone feel old and worthless....but from all reports Wagner was salty to the end so I am surprised if the next time contracts came up she didn't just tell them, "Uh..no!: Which reminds me when JER wrote Alice being killed (by choking on a donut no less)and someone said he was getting rid of all the "old people" FR reportedly s said something along the lines of "Who is he kidding, does he think he is a teenager himself.." and a disparaging comment on his weight. You do not screw with these old pros who have seen it all and have nothing to loose!

I do think Bob and Kim and Lucinda were written well until the end...( I would have brought back family members but...and I would never gotten rid of John, he and Lucinda would be the Bizzaro Bob and Kim...totally committed to each other and their families but sarcastic, caustic and not above making trouble for others) much better than GL wrote for anyone other than Java. But I disagree on Lisa....she would have been very easy to write for as she loved getting involved with everyone....she would be another greek chorus making catty remarks on what was happening and helping, in her own eccentric ways, the wayward youths of Oakdale. I do think that Lisa is more interesting without a romanctic involvement but she could still be in the action.

Now Sheffer was not my favorite but my memory of this is that in an interview he says he bumped into Wagner in the hallway and she said "You haven't been writing for me much!" and he admitted it and said, "She is our matriarch, she needs to be written for"..so maybe it was a different interview but he was not being rude here.

I don't know if he didn't know that much, or it was more of a joke...( I can see his Mom saying, "Oh I was kidnapped a lot") and Lindsay seems much more into her art, etc. and probably was while he was growing up..and let's face it, he was of a generation where ATWT and soaps in general did not have the iconic place in pop culture. He probably did know more about hid grandfather doing an autopsy on Laura Palmer and dealing with the a town full or weirdness due to the magic of film.

Bev looks like Garbo trying to be undercover..or someone's cleaning lady who got gifted a coat....damn Mark Lewis was so f*cking cute...I can't believe he was straight but alas..he is and happily married to Frankie Hughes all these years. He teaches drama near me, I wonder if his students know he used to be a heart throb for girls and a lot of gay boys at that time. Ferrel is so naturally cute too, too bad that things kind of went south for her in real life.

I loved her too..smart but nice....(My neighbor next door had the total hots for Meg Ryan's Betsy but didn't like this one..I said, "But her Betsy was so stupid," and he said, "Yea, that's what made her even hotter, cute and stupid.." So you see you can talk to straight guys about soaps! Frost's kid played for my team the Chicago White Sox...I saw an interview where he was asked what his mom did on the soap and he said, "I think get kidnapped..." They should have had both Betsy and Frankie back.

I always wanted Michael Shea to return...maybe during the time David had amnesia....he would have course have to have miracle soap plastic surgery but he would be able to push Lisa's ego and horn dog buttons and also get in Ellen's good graces in that he would be providing medical care for the homeless, something that Ellen would volunteer for. Maybe he would take the name of one of David's friends who had died...and of course "Chuckie " would be alive and fall for Betsy (much better then angry Steve..) Somehow the women would end up being threatened by him and held hostage and Ellen would get to slap Lisa when she was hysterical...Lisa, "I wasn't that hysterical," Ellen "I know, but it's a good excuse..that slap was years in the coming!"

My fault as I asked the question about the unabortion and I heard the unfortunate answer! I am glad McTrash got no where near ATWT or we would have the Grandpa Hughes collaborating with Nazis and Judge Lowell running a sweat shop behind the Wade Bookstore and he and Lisa had an affair and James was their son.... I love that "Rise"was playing...Poor Ian will be sorry he was rising later that night! The Stewarts weren't my favorites but they were part of the show..I never got the whole Hughes vs. Stewart thing that Sheffer tried to press down our throats...the two families were friends and allies for years, and Susan wasnt even a Stewart anymore! They could indeed have brought Dee back and Annie's kids. I do like what Wheeler did with GL in the end...characters like Van and Matt and Mindy made sporadic appearances and then Danny and Michelle. I hate how soaps write someone off the show never to be heard from again as if they have no ties to their old family and friends. Ellen would have been a character like that..during the dumb Emily and Tom affair she should have been there, reigniting her "feud" with Lisa...."Oh, it's funny you call my granddaughter a slut when the word was practically invented for you!"

I hear about the unabortion all the time...would love to hear what the whole storyline was played out....I imagine it had to be much like GL and Brandon is Amanda's bio-dad...soemthing that could have happened but was not what we saw on screen...(and no one could tell me that McTrash did not come up with that storyline...it came too close to her being shown the door and reeks of her stink.) But you can't blame her on the actor's intense reaction to playing that story out...it was a typical story with a bit of a twist...but it shouldn't have been played as many days a week as it was and it went on way too long. You think Sheffer was mean and nasty....McTrash had Brent making fun of Nadine as he was carrying her coprse around....this on the heals of JFP killing off Mo made GL the "Lets kill our moms" , soap.

ALL: Lack of Body Diversity on Soaps
Agreeing with you 100 precent..I think that the guys that used to be (and still may be) be on Days and Passions are...really boring looking. But as soon as a guy with no abs is on people start calling them "fat" (going back to the days Marland fired Mulwist as he thought he was too fat!)
-
ALL: Lack of Body Diversity on Soaps
Any type of body diversity has been with women (larger woman with skinny pretty boy...) but it would be nice to see a reversal of that, or even just two larger. people together (I guess Josh and Reva the later years applies but they had been together for so long.). I think its just a bit boring to see a generic version of "hot" on the soaps...it would be nice to seem some normal looking people in there (not against having "hot" people there either as its entertainment.) Speaking of Reva..it was odd during the Rauch years they had her as the goddess of love no man could resist...even in her heyday of Long she wasn't that...but especially since Kimmer, an attractive woman, was no a 40 something woman who had a 40 something body. I would have much rather they just addressed the fact and that Josh and occasionally someone else still found her sexy...(God knows Reva would know how to screw...)

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Agreed...after GL and ATWT were cancelled I just gave up on soaps (well, not that I had any hopes on the last decade of both but I hung in there out of loyalty and an occasional flash of the old stuff) but I am going to start watching GH just because of Mulcahey...even if I don't like some of his story choices (the Buzz centric GL was annoying) his writing is still intelligent and funny and has heart. Hopefully it will work out, it would be nice to have a "show" again.

Ratings From the 90's
McTavish...."You think your quality and ratings are down now..hold my beer!" and got us near cancellation. Which brings up another ratings question..does one specific actor or character ever impact the ratings. This is when they brought back Reva and the ratings continued to tumble and I could never understand why they thought Reva/Zimmer were such a draw that she would eat the entire show.

Ratings From the 90's
GL was still very good material wise, about to fall, and this is one time where you could see the ratings linking up with the quality. JFP can't blame O.J.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
The problem was...MK is elegant and beautiful and a good actress but she did not give fiery vixen vibes..she worked best as a stuck up elitist to the manor born woman, and that role was taken by Alex. That is why I wish they had put her in Alex's place when the fired Marj (and tried to have Amanda take Alex place) after she came back from the dead. Her almost death would give her a new lease on life and not want to sit around sighing with Matt or taking Dinah's [!@#$%^&*]. Instead of wasting her time on that dumb internet chat room romance, I would have her see Spaulding raided by Roger and Amanda and Alan too taken with Annie and Phillip doing whatever he was doing, Spaulding on the verge of bankruptcy or a hostile takeover and she gets pissed...so she starts buying up stock and comes back a hell on wheels. She could have been as Spaulding fighting with Amanda and Annie..etc. That clip of Wheeler era Van is actually quite good and addressed some issues with Matt that always simmered in the background. Despite the dumbness of someone using a trust fund (that is why the are in trust) and Van not knowing about it and loosing her money...she was kinda old Van there( I love when she tells Dinah to "Be Quiet"...Kinkaid was great as a stone cold woman with a hidden temper.) Did Kreizman fall asleep in the writers room and someone sneak in?

ALL: Characters who shouldn't have died.
I always thought that was an odd choice as Melinda had ties to everyone...Kim's niece, Babs sister, Bob's stepdaughter, Frances sister., Lisa's employee...and everyone was just kind of."Oh that's too bad...now let's talk about boring Dee and Annie." I know the decision came because the actress was causing trouble in the Zenk/Schultz push and pull to be the star of the show, but just sit all three down and tell them to stop their [!@#$%^&*]!
