Any storylines altered or dropped because of real world factors?
Here are some I thought of for primetime shows: On the Sopranos it seems like they had plans for Livia Soprano to have a full on mob war with her son Tony before Nancy Marchand's death It seems like there were bigger plans for the "others " on Lost because Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros DUI.

I looked if this topic was already discussed before I decided to create a thread. My apologies if subject was already discussed

Actors who looked like members of their soap families (and those that didn't)
Sean Kanan, Chad Duell, Steve Burton look related Out of all Reva and Josh's kids Jeff Branson looks the most like those two actors Shemar Moore and Kristoff St John

All : Storyline risks that didn't pay off.
Point taken Although I disagree the revisiting of Luke raping Laura did not pay off I thought it paid off in dividends It planted the seeds for some great storytelling for the next few years after that On the other hand killing Maureen didn't do anything storyline wise for the canvas of Guiding Light.

It sorta paid off if you count Emmy wins as successful

Killing off Maureen Bauer. Storyline did nothing for the overall canvas, as a matter of fact the show fell off in quality without a moral compass type of character. Ed Bauer grieved for a couple of months, but started to have goo goo eyes for a younger woman was eye rolling material at best. One Life to Live Eterna Guiding Light clone storyline When soaps not named Days of Our Lives or Passions start dabbling in the sci-fi/fantasy stuff

Daytime Influence on the Primetime Soaps
It seems like the main thing primetime tv figured out about daytime soaps is the premise that an audience would be comfortable with a serialized format week by week. Ironically I think the first primetime tv show to use serialized format was the comedy "Soap"

ALL: Storylines that took the biggest risks and got the biggest rewards?
Well deserved Emmy winning performance from Linda Dano. She should have more than one Emmy for her work on Another World Talking about breathing fresh air into a show You could tell the writers really liked writing for the character

Unpopular opinions: cancelled soaps edition
Yea I kinda knew the backstory about Kanaly wanted a bigger role in the show. Which is ironic because he role in the show didn't increase. It was about the same after that plot point was revealed. I think a 4th Ewing son was a great idea for a storyline, but it should have been a new character Yea I kinda knew the backstory about Kanaly wanted a bigger role in the show. Bianca's lesbian storyline Up until that point gay characters were one off characters or were not part of the legacy family Really risky giving the biggest soap character of all time a gay offspring

The reformed trope
Todd Manning's redemption from a black hat villain to more of a gray villain surprisingly worked well. It was a stroke of genius making Viki his sister. Scott Bryce's Craig should be the blueprint into turning a character from a villain to a hero

The Felicia Gallant and John Hudson affair on Another World It gave those actors involved the best material they had in a while

In hindsight you're right I never got Colleen's death also, it just seemed like a way to create Emmy reels

The little I remember about Sunset Beach it was fun, but the acting was bad even by soap standards

ALL: Storylines that took the biggest risks and got the biggest rewards?
Killing off Cassie was a waste They knew it was a waste of storyline because they had to retcon a long lost twin The only thing that storyline added was pushing Nick and Phyllis together, and even the writers could come up with a better way to advance that plot point

That particular storyline how ramifications on the canvas directly and indirectly until OLTL was cancelled Brad Maule's first and only Emmy nomination

It was pointless making Ray Krebbs into the fourth Ewing son. It added a little tension at the beginning of the storyline, but it made no impact overall on the show. If they were going to do a fourth Ewing son at least make it a new character

I couldn't imagine Erin Torpey handling the over the top campy material that Bree had to work with It's not a knock on Erin, but her Jessica was a little more grounded The whole Heaven Can Wait storyline with Marcie and Michael was cringe even for soap standards, but I think every show needs the nice boring couple. That's what Marcie and Michael's purpose on the show. I think Roger Howarth's Paul Ryan was a chance for the actor to play a Todd Manning type of character without the rape aspect in the background Although my memory is fuzzy, but I thought Scott Holyrod's Paul was a good guy. It was weird seeing the character become a anti hero once another actor stepped in the role

JR Ewing and his copies
Funny enough Daniel Pilon who played Alan Spaulding # 2 was on a few episodes of Dallas I always thought his Alan was the most like JR ewing

The Dream Season was great If Knots Landing and Dynasty had a baby it would Dallas Dream Season The ironic thing about that season it really had a dreamy surreal tone even though it was supposed to play as a straight up continuation of the previous season Hopping on the China Beach love. Fantastic groundbreaking show Too bad network tv doesn't take risks with drama series anymore
