Bold and Beautiful August 2021 Discussion
Loving the return of the old musical cues, and hoping we get some good flashbacks like in Sheila’s past returns. I am guessing Finn would have been conceived at some point after Sheila ran off with Mary and before her first return to LA, but who knows if that will be cleared up?

ALL SOAPS: GRADE MAY SWEEPS 2021
Since Sheila was brought up...have there been any updates on Kimberlin Brown’s visit to the studio? Supposedly it was for some sort of special, but I haven’t heard anything about it since.

Iconic female friendships on soaps
Y&R: Cricket and Nina, Sharon and Dru B&B: Stephanie and Sally (also an iconic rivalry), Brooke and Sheila (which obviously didn’t last)

Accent Work on Soaps: The Good, The Bad, and The Godawful
My mind immediately went to her. Losing Adrienne Leon for Sursok was a raw deal. I generally find Australian actors unconvincing as Americans. Ingo Rademacher didn’t fare much better as B&B’s Thorne.

I’ve never been able to figure out what she actually says either, but I always thought it was “You lie and cheat and treat me like an animal.” Thanks for re-posting this clip; I can’t think of a more thrilling period of the show. All beats played to perfection, a Shakespearean play compared to today.

Which death of a character was totally unnecessary and damaging?
That is fair. And certainly TPTB wouldn’t have dared to recast. Still, with KSJ having passed and Olivia nowhere in sight there is a large hole in the Winters family I wish Dru were there to fill.

Sheila’s 2017 return started off pretty well but it became clear after a few months Bell didn’t really know what to do with her. By the time she became a busybody waitress it was clear there wasn’t much foresight or direction (unlike her previous returns, which varied in quality but all had a full narrative arc). The worst was when they had Sheila blab to Eric about seeing Katie with Wyatt—like, what? Then she just kind of disappeared. If Bell knew Kimberlin Brown was running for office he should have sent her out with a bang (literally).

When did "Bold and the Beautiful" stop being good to you?
I don’t recall Sheila and Massimo having a past...apart from a fling in 2002. I think the show has gradually deteriorated from its golden era in the early-mid 90s, but it remained mostly good up until 2003/2004, by which point Nick and Jackie ate up a lot of the show for years. Darlene Conley’s passing, the introduction of the horrible triangle, and Susan Flannery’s departure were just nail after nail in the coffin. The show has a decent cast but they are not used properly.

Suicide in Soaps
Sheila attempted to off herself twice on B&B, both by drinking poison and jumping off a roof.

ALL: Characters obviously developed to “replace” popular departed characters
Ivy Forrester replaced Steffy Forrester on B&B for a while. Xander was also a pretty obvious Zende stand-in.

Why do you watch soaps, and has the reason changed?
I started watching as a young kid with my late grandfather in the early 90s. We had about 5-10 channels on the antenna and CBS seemed to be what was always on. I mainly recall watching Y&R and B&B. I loved all the characters but the Lauren/Sheila storyline was what got me hooked. Sheila terrified me as a kid. The last I recall from that time period was the infamous “goodbye party.” I think I started elementary school right after that because I don’t remember seeing her again until she returned in 2002. I still watched both shows during the summer, long after my grandfather passed, and particularly loved the Glo by Jabot teens in the early 2000s. I occasionally watch because it’s fun to see characters I have “known” for 30 years but I don’t find the storylines very gripping. I returned to B&B full time when Sheila came back but we all know how that turned out. The classics were a godsend and I already miss them.

Y&R to air classic episodes
My favorites, in chronological order: - The masquerade ball - Sheila, Lauren and Molly at the farmhouse - The bachelorette party for Christine - Jill and Kay’s attic fight - The Glow by Jabot pool episode (wasn’t the main s/l but that’s what I most associate with that era) - Kay’s intervention (both episodes) The ‘81 episode was before my time but fascinating to watch from a historical standpoint.

Y&R to air classic episodes
I always found it strange that Sheila was never in the opening. Then again, I don’t think Michael was in his first run either. I am guessing Bill Bell knew they would inevitably be written off the show due to their crimes and thus didn’t bother.
