It was quite telling to me that Alison was the only one who did porn.  It was implied that both Amber and Alison had done some meth but only Alison was the one who developed an insatiable appetite for it and was doing porn to support her habit.  From what I remember, Amber was the one who ended up contacting Emily (against Alison's wishes) to rescue Emily and oddly, Emily engaged Dusty for help with the rescue effort.  The show was just so random at that point.  As unpopular as Amber could sometimes be on Y&R, I found it fascinating that the show still wanted to "protect" the character by restricting her to a little drug use but not the full-blown dark underbelly of drugs & porn.  I just think that the two shows were in completely different places and it showed.

I vaguely recall an online component, so you're probably correct on that.  I know that ATWT was trying to develop more of an interactive feel and engage viewers with an online technological component.

Had the show hung on a few more years, those interactive seeds that were planted may have borne some fruit but as it was, most ATWT viewers (who skewed older and were not exactly tech savvy) weren't quite ready for it and ATWT really didn't fully invest and implement it properly anyway.

I was on and off with the show in the last decade but I do remember the InTurn contest as yet another attempt to engage viewers in an interactive way.

I would have love a cross-over during the 1980s or even early 1990s when both shows still resembled themselves and were at a high in terms of critical success.

To see a power conference of corporate leaders in the region with Lucinda Walsh and Alexandra Spaulding would have been lit!

Or to see a medical convention with the likes of Dr. Bob Hughes, Dr. Ed Bauer, Dr. Susan Stewart, Dr. Rick Bauer, Dr. John Dixon!

Or to see some big lawsuit over water contamination that is affecting Springfield and Oakdale's water pipes and have Ross Marler, Tom Hughes, Jessica Griffin all consulting on the suit!

Or to see one of those natural disasters that hit several mid-Western towns and cities affect either Springfield or Oakdale, or parts of both and have the towns/cities pre-eminent families come together to raise funds to aid in the recovery.

    So. many. ideas!

    Sucks those cant happen now.

Maybe if abcs soap reboots are sucessful cbs may try but idk

And the P&G soaps had a long history of referencing the others---at least obliquely. For instance, road signs or travel destinations might have been "Bay City", "Oakdale" and "Springfield". (With occasional nods to Love of Life with Rosehill, Search for Tomorrow with Henderson or Edge of Night with Monticello...)

I was always puzzled why ATWT and GL never in later years did any kind of crossover---especially when they were still taping in the same building.

RE: the Y&R/ATWT crossover---wasn't there some kind of "see content online" hook to that story? I seem to recall something about that---I don't think Amber went over well on YR and they were trying to seem edgy with the story about Amber & Ali and how they met doing porn or something.

oh idk if i would have wanted a GL ATWT during those final years when they decided To turn the show into a psuedo reality show with no music and handheld cameras. I don't blame GL because the budget was trash by the end but still.

Why is this new?  CBS Daytime is dead.  Get more Talk, get another hour of Price is Right, another hour of Wayne Brady on Let's make a Deal, and then have him cross over to B&B and maybe Sheryl Underwood could be on B&B, and Drew Cary Could be on Y&R or Bob Barker could be on  B&B....wait....alot of this already happened.  And the haters - you don't need to worry for much longer.  We are out.  We're done and we're not coming back.

But Go Adam Newman.  He is the face and the future of the show.  He's everything.  So you go with that.  I hope you do go with Adam and this version of the show because when i say 1 or 2 minutes a week - I mean it.  So maybe that's why the show is so great and I don't understand it.  I'll say it again, my entire family has stopped watching.  I watch awful Lifetime Movies now and can't wait for Kelly Clarkson's show to start and for Ellen to resume.  But disregard me and do what you're doing.

Do you know why I still post?  Because I see what is so bad.  But go do you, you're doing awesome.

what are you talking about no one mentioned you.

@cattykittens Do you not remember when Mary Williams constantly mentioned sauerkraut (along with her famous spare ribs)?   That was sort of a big part of Paul's stories for awhile.

DD really likes JG huh. He has had one scene in a month and he hasn't complained once.

    No, they're really not.

That little stint they did with Alison and Amber was something of a lark, borne out of desperation for synergy.  Y&R was Sony/Bell and ATWT was P&G.   Had both shows truly existed in the same universe, Michael Baldwin would never have been able to go on ATWT as Michael Baldwin, where he was once known as Kurt McColl.

TBH, ATWT existed more in the same universe as AW and other P&G soaps.  That's why the Jake and Cass cross-overs made sense. Bay City was often mentioned as existing not too far from Oakdale.  I always wanted GL and ATWT to do a cross-over, they were both P&G soaps, had a legacy of having shared some of the same writers and had a similar feel of having a matriarch-centered canvas with "warmth" to it.

Y&R had more of a cool, slick tone and it really had no legacy of being matriarchal-centered. I think that, for the most part ATWT and Y&R naturally existed in two different universes.  The Alison storyline, for the most part was still relegated to ATWT's universe, it had no impact on any existing stories in Genoa City.

I think the couple of episodes where they said that Alison was in Genoa City seemed oddly out of place with the regular show.  It also seemed as if those episodes were filmed separately, apart from the rest of the show, as if it existed entirely in a vacuum, away from the regular Y&R.

thanks :)  Sad i never got to watch these shows while they aired. I hear P&G really wanted out of the soap business when GL and ATWT got cancelled right?

How do we even quantify this anymore?  What is airing that we would call a Knots Landing or Melrose Place etc?

Grey's Anatomy is close to a pure network soap, in that the entire show (even the events) are about how the characters relate emotionally to each other- romantic, family, friendships.  It has maintained very strong ratings over its entire run.  This is Us is a soap to me too, also high ratings.

But everything that is not a done in one procedural is a form of continuing drama, and most of those have soap elements.  Even something like The Walking Dead has some soapy elements.

i mean like the REALLY soapy series. Dynasty and ambitions.
but yeah i consider this is us a soap too. epsecially with that back from the dead twist lol

  6. Mark did an interview with SID. He talked about how nerve wracking it is to be a recast and replace so many good actors. He also said adam is a good guy but wounded "He suffers from abandonment issues… and trust issues,  Adam didn’t grow up in this world. He doesn’t feel like he belongs, [whereas] Victoria and Nick grew up with silver spoons in their mouths.”

He also talked about hiw stuff will be revealed about delias accident

"There’s some stuff coming up, and things will be addressed a little more” regarding that “tragic accident.”

When this happened at ABC they canceled two soaps which should say it all LOL. Not having someone there dedicated to soaps makes it easier to look at their budgets and want to replace them with cheap talk shows. GH has managed to stick around somehow, but there seems to be the opposite of what Angelica was accused of in terms of interfering with the show. For years nothing has happened on GH. The show has good scripts, a good (extremely large cast) and is watchable, but the storylines a dull and rarely go anywhere. It's just kinda moving along slowly, but you can tell there is nobody focused on making sure the show is good. Now if they had a good writer/producer in place it would be heaven being able to write in peace, but the team they have is just so bad.

yeah i heard they keep frank for his money saving skills

Both things can be true. She did lots of good things, but also did lots of bad things and the bad has been outweighing the good lately. Throw in the fact that she isn't going to be replaced and it's certainly troubling regardless of what you think of her personally considering what happened when other networks did the same thing.

for ABC this happened after frons right? How did GH change?

I only really mentioned Raúl because he is Cuban-American like the Rosales.  I'm not sure why a Mexican American family wasn't introduced but perhaps politics was the determining factor in that decision.  I wasn't opposed to Arturo (perhaps the casting wasn't ideal), I wasn't even opposed to the actor but he was introduced so poorly, his character made virtually no impact.

I was just thinking that had Lauren had a better storyline for her struggling boutique, Neil and HWG could've been consulting on the transformation of Fenmore's and told her that she needed to revamp the flagship store and she would need a contractor and while Brittany was in town doing some shopping, she could've mentioned that Raúl has a cousin who is a contractor. Despite Lauren's reservations about how she can afford it, she decides to take a meeting with this contractor, eventually paving the way for Arturo's introduction.

So many possibilities to seamlessly introduce new characters but Y&R's staff weren't up to the task.

This show could been so much better.

when sally tried to do some stuff she got noted to hell.

How does steve kent effect things? I know he casts and angelica introduced her muse lola and the rosales.

Y&R was still being aired on PoPTV?  Wow.

Honestly, I don't think that Y&R being pulled off PopTV would have been much of an influence in the decision to pull an entire Division.  If anything, it might have been the reverse.  I think Y&R being pulled might have much more to do with programming changes going on at PopTV.  Networks tend to make these kinds of decisions in the same part of their seasons so it appears that everything is happening at the same time.

From what I read, PopTV wants to invest a lot more in original programming.  They found a lot of acclaim from being the U.S. broadcast network for Schitt's Creek and I think they are eager to replicate that prestige with other series, which is why they pushed so hard to get the rebooted One Day At A Time series.

How do primetime soaps do in ratings?  I see we have alot more of those.
It wont ever happen but lets say YR was moved to that timeslot would it do better?

    Amen!

If Josh Griffith isn't trying to roll back the clock to the last time he was writing Y&R, he's stealing shitty ideas from other soaps that played out during the George W. Bush administration!  Whatever hangups he has about 2019, he needs to let them go!

isn't he like really petty. I remember i heard MAB didnt allow water bottles on set or something and when she got canned he brought a whole bunch of them

Say what you want about Sussman, but she salvaged and reinvigorated Sharon and Victor before she got the boot for hacker Mal Young.

mal and Angelica screwed her over.
she wanted devon to get shot by the cops and Reed to become an aloholic and angelica said no.
mal wanted HW job from the beginning
