Yeah, I got the sense that that was coming.

Same. Didn’t want to come across like a MAB apologist in my previous post. But I really do feel like she gutted the show. After LML, who just didn’t appreciate what was good about Y&R at all and didn’t understand or even like the characters outside of a precious few, MAB initially seemed like a breath of fresh air. But her show was so dark and nihilistic in an incompetent and insulting attempt to reference old-school gothic Y&R. It was like watching a desecration.

I liked MAB until late 2009/2010 than she just got stupid

Huge sets and EXTRAS! The rec center, Crimson Lights and GCAC used to be bustling.

With the budgets now being in the range of 35-60 million a year, how much revenue are these shows generating? I know ratings suck but it's nothing to scoff at that these shows can still bring in 2-4 million people per day, some primetime shows barely have more than that weekly (for instance, ABC's top rated drama Grey's Anatomy averages 6 million viewers, of course more of them are in the desired demo compared to the soaps) .

True!, I think the soaps do better than just neilson also. Because we know from toups with the live+7 YR had just over 4 million viewers, and we do not know streaming numbers

It's very evident is watching these "classic episodes" that the budgets are a fraction of what they used to be even in the 1990s.

Still, the production values of Y&R and B&B are so much better than DAYS. it got to the point that I found it distracting...like that "blue room" that was redressed over and over to be everything.

I noticed. Camerons suite in the 2004 episode was Huge,  Devons rec center set was also gigantic. And the chancellor mansion had a dining room and bedrooms. Sigh. But yes they still look better than poor af days.

ONE rumor has that it was staff reaction to a lukewarm reception of Brown & Kruger in the roles that lead to the Katherine/Jill twist. Not sure how true that was but sheesh Katherine & Jill would probably find peace together gushing over the same grandchild.

I do blame Jack Smith all the way though. Y&R was the #1 soap and has an already well established, seasoned, and talented  Emmy winning team. Yet Smith became desperate for attention, shocks, ratings grabs, and Emmy grabs, something Y&R never ever did before.

Agreed! Katherine was such a nasty old rich lady with nothing but time on her hands lol. Under Latham & MAB they gave her sainthood and even talked up about what a “successful smart businesswoman” she had always been. All I could say was “Oh dear God in heaven...”

I know Jeanne would never hide her distaste for some regimes, How was she with the stuff you mentioned?

Yes, on the other side of the foyer. It was only seen occasionally.

Same with the original Newman Ranch - I recall a dining scene with the set extended to house a dining table.

But we've never seen what's adjacent to the Abbott living room...

I watched the CDN. The GCAC suite looked HUGE. And crimson lights backroom wasn't just a broom closet. Ughhh. I never realised how beautiful these sets were

@AdamNewmanFan I just love reading your updates! I could do without the 2002 wedding since that's been aired before but the rest of the week sounds really solid.

Here's a longer recap for 4/14/98... this is the one where Victor does Nikki's makeup in the hospital. https://www.soapcentral.com/yr/recaps/1998/980413.php#tue
