  1. I didn't care for JVD's submission for his second win. The first episode was so annoying, but obviously the panelists liked it. The supporting acting categories always have some of the most bizarre wins. As for GL, there were some egregious omissions. MY top omissions would be Michelle Forbes and Beverlee McKinsey not winning lead actress emmies. Yes, Susan Lucci hogged up a spot she didn't earn because most of her material throughout the years was incredibly shallow and one note (hence, her one win was something substantial). On the other hand, Erika Slezak deserved her noms except for the year that McKinsey submitted because even press at the time said Slezak had been supporting the last six months of that eligibility window. AW and GL were definitely "undernominated" in the mid to late eighties.
  2. I think Frank Beaty should have won over ver Dorn or Sutton. I did not see Deas's submission, but Maule's was excellent. The same happened with Jaclyn Zeman who lost to Rena Sofer's submission (a submission I did not care for but I also never liked Sofer on GH). I can only guess their episodes did not play well for people who were unaware of the story. That happens occasionally. Also, I wonder if actors win because they have been on other shows, and have stronger connections to the daytime community. JFP certainly knew how to work the Emmy system. I'll give her credit for that.
  3. That sounds about right for what a network would do. SB seems to have been interfered with constantly so it's hard to know who's responsible for what because the Dobsons haven't always been reliable in their versions either.
  4. I never got the appeal of Buzz in any shape or form and I especially didn't like when he put on that fake accent. Obviously, he was so bad at it that he eventually lost it. I was an inconsistent GL viewer when Buzz was eating up airtime, but all that trouble for a character who didn't deserve it. I don't understand.
  5. I get recommended a lot of Robert/Eden/Cruz scenes on youtube. A lot of them involve Cruz or Robert manhandling her (Cruz/Eden in the cave during the Robert barr storyline; Robert throwing her around while reenacting Raul's murder) which strikes me as very odd considering this was after Eden's rape storyline. Was there any criticism of this at the time?
  6. From what I've seen of Elizabeth Dennehy's Blake, I like her a lot as an actress. Her character doesn't make sense because she's always up to something but I didn't understand what. I also liked Nicolette Goulet as an actress, but Meredith is another character who confuses me. Seem to be a lot of characters around this time that do not make sense. Alexandra Neill's character is another one.
  7. I've been watching some GL episodes, and I have little memory of the character of Rose. I like the actress (Alexandra Neill) but I can't think of one storyline of hers. Also, was Elizabeth Dennehy really fired because she looked like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction? Some people online indicate that it is so. In the episodes I watch, Ed is upset because he feels Maureen is in love with Fletcher. I like this storyline and I wish it had been fleshed out/continued. Also, Carl Tye Evans was such a cutie.
  8. I'm glad Beverlee McKinsey didn't return to AW as Iris as I grew up with Carmen Duncan and I think she was a phenomenal actress. She should have won the Emmy for the chief and Mac's death storylines. Beverlee MCKinsey was so good as Alexandra and also should have won an Emmy for her work there (even if her last months were a mess for Alexandra and Simms's Mindy).
  9. I always had the idea that the Dobsons didn't like A. Martinez because of his connection to JFP. When SB won their first emmy, Bridget walks past him while hugging everyone else. I'm glad JB and AM could reconnect again.
  10. I did soap hop so I'm trying to remember any time that I switched to another soap because of an actor and I can't think of one. It was usually because I got bored with a soap and I heard about a storyline on another show. As much as I adore Colleen Zenk Pinter, I didn't start watching YR recently. I have no memory of Marcy Walker's time on the show storyline wise except I thought her full name was Tangerine and that she and Robert Newman presented the emmy to Susan Haskell for supporting actress. As a young kid, I bailed on GL when Maureen left the cabin. I kept up a bit through plot summaries, but it was not until Brett/Marian that I actually watched episodes. My mother adored the Kyle/Reva pairing and always disliked Josh for coming back. I don't think she was watching the show when Rosh/Jeva were first a couple. I suppose that's why I always picture Ron Raines as Alan because he's the Alan I'm most familiar with.
  11. I don't understand the point of stunt casting because if someone were popular on another network's show, most viewers of their new show would most likely not have watched. I think there are a small number of viewers who soap hopped especially in the early nineties.
  12. From what I remember reading about Walker's decision to join GL, she was promised so much that was not delivered. I know there was an interview with another GL actor who commented that the GL cast were all shocked that Marcy Walker was given so little to do. I want to say it's either Crystal Chappell or Liz Keifer but I'm not sure.
  13. Didn't JFP hire Marcy Walker to save her job? I do feel sorry for Marcy Walker because she did her best but the writers had no idea what to do with her. From her comments, I don't think Walker ever forgave JFP for her treatment at GL.
  14. I think it could be worse now for an actor to come out as gay as the climate in the U.S. has become so anti-gay. I'm sure actors' representatives would scare them into not coming out. Maybe I'm just being overly pessimistic.
  15. Janis Paige was such a good Minx even thought the ages didn't seem to match. Such a talented woman who lived a very long life.
  16. Everyone passed the buck when it came to Frankie Frame's death, so I don't believe any of them. MDP and JFP have a track record of violence against women. They also have a history of putting the blame on other people for their mistakes. It was only a few years later that JFP got in trouble at GH for how violent and dark GH became with all the violence and yet another serial killer storyline. As for the 1987 serial killer storyline, it seems to go along with MDP's obsession with punishing strong women. It was all designed for a character (Lisa) who had no lasting impression on the show. As someone else said on this thread, Lisa's backstory and connection to Glaser is so distasteful. I can't think of a serial killer storyline on a soap that had a long lasting effect on a show. They just seem designed to fire people and get immediate ratings that inevitably fall because there's no longterm story.
  17. Can we please keep this thread on topic so administrators don't shut it down? I'm surprised Laibson did not work well on GL because I liked his time on AW for the most part.
  18. AT least the Ben Read nonsense gave MAtt Bomer something interesting to do, and if daytime emmys were given out to the best performers, he would have been nominated and won. JFP and Beyond, I felt too many of the producers had real contempt for the audience and the characters. They never seemed to understand what made the show special. I think JFP did immense damage to the show (and not just the mistake we're still talking about 30 yrs later) but it could have been salvaged. There were times post-JFP where the show did right itself, and then the wheels would fall off again. The whole Zaslow "wizened old man" controversy shows what kind of people had power at the network and P&G.
  19. My memory of GL starts from around 1986. I found post-Reva plunge GL (in Calhourn's tenure and a bit into JFP's) so compelling because a lot of the canvas was being used. There were long-term storylines that had actual ramifications rather than storylines for dramatic shock. However, I think Justin Deas and Tom Pelphrey did much more damage to GL than Kim Zimmer did.
  20. I have to put a word in for the Sonni/Solita. I adored it, and Michelle Forbes was robbed of a Best Actress emmy for her work. She was phenomenal. Like Cynthia Watros, she came in and took the focus away from Zimmer's Reva through her acting.
  21. I don't think it's interesting to have everyone in the town hate a villain if that villain is going to stick around. Maureen was definitely needed to humanise Roger. Roger and Maureen's friendship could also have come into play during the Ed/Lillian affair and created more story. When I watch the takedown of Roger scenes, it makes me angry how much potential was there for all of the characters and how JFP indeed squandered so much of that for the sake of easy/sweeps drama points. Leaving Maureen aside, Mindy became brain dead and desperate once JFP took over. It's to Simms's credit that she made a lot of it work, but once Simms left, Mindy was never the same.
  22. Going off what Kalbir wrote, I think the Maureen/Roger friendship was an important one and it should have been explored. That's something soap never understood. Viewers appreciate these odd friendships because they not only give depth to the characters, but it provides more avenues for drama. That's something so many producers don't understand. It's not about these big sweeps storylines or dramatic storylines; it's about the character interactions and the ramifications.
  23. I totally forgot about the way John was introduced. Ugh. I must have blanked it out as it was my least favorite soap trope. The whole Mary saga is so annoying because I so enjoy watching Denise Alexander on the episodes I've rewatched, but it's obvious they didn't have a game plan. She has chemistry with everyone she interacts with on the show so why write off her family, Reginald, and Scott? Along the same lines, I wish Sharon Gabet had gone to another soap or they had written for her talents. Her character makes no sense to me when I've watched episodes from her tenure. She seems to have a different personality every episode. Losing Nancy was so odd to me. I have no idea why they didn't recast if Jane Cameron could not be lured back. I could see Judi Evans as Nancy. The John/Felicia affair was such a mess, and didn't even make sense within the writing. I'm glad it won Anna Holbrook an Emmy, but yeesh was it not well thought out. Speaking of Sharlene and John, I actually wish the Taylor portion of the Sharlene/John story had lasted longer. I found Andreas and the character so intriguing. Contessa, it's not letting me quote you. I think Timmins was the superior Paulina, and the Jake/Paulina story with Evans was so icky to me. As for the Red Swan, I thought it was an incredible waste of time when it could have been done so much better. That seems to be a common refrain of mine with these magic wand wishes.
  24. There are a lot of "I would" statements here. Off the top of my head and I'm sure there are a lot more: I would have had a definite end game for the Red Swan I would not have fired Cali Timmins and recast Paulina. I would not have let Iris Duncan languish in storylines beneath her talent and then write Iris into a corner. I would not have had Jake rape Marley. As far as I'm concerned, they could have killed off Jake. I would not have hired Jensen Buchanan to play Marley/Vicky. I would not kill off Frankie. I would not let JFP or Charlotte Savitz anywhere near the show. Lumina would never have happened. Lorna would not have been raped. I would have made Cecile's return something longterm and interesting. Joy Bell and Allison Hossack would have been better integrated in the show and given something to do. The Lawrences would have been a proper family storyline wise on the show. 1986-1990: Mary/Reginald story would have been plotted and Reginald would not have been written off so weakly. Quinn would not have been killed off. Scott would have gotten the big storyline that was always on the edge of happening. Jane Cameron would not have left the show. The MJ prostitution story would not have happened. Sally Spencer would have been given something else to do.
  25. Of all the things that happened to AW the last five to seven years of its existence, the gorilla doesn't bother me that much. In fact, it probably wouldn't even place in the top ten. I know it's a sticking point for some, and I understand why, but If I had a magic wand and could erase mistakes from let's say 1990 to 1999, the gorilla would remain there because I'm using my wand to change other things. And I went back as far as 1986 (pre-1986 is before my time), the gorilla would fall even further down the do-over list.
