  1. I just think we can like both; just because something is popular doesn't make it inherently devalued. People worship Michonne and for good reason. For me, I just can't let a specific subset of dumb fans dictate what I enjoy, or how I process the show and its own merits by worrying about those people on the outside of it. Trying to anticipate the movements and reactions of a slice of the audience doesn't make for a fun viewing experience, and it's not fair, IMO, to the characters or actors or the story that's being told. There's always going to be idiots who worship Daryl or whoever, but that doesn't mean I can't like Daryl (or whoever or whatever else) too while also having what I hope is a bit more of a nuanced take on the entire ensemble. I adore Carol and Rick but it doesn't mean I love Michonne or Sasha or Maggie any less. I think if we worry so much about factionalism, then we end up joining them ourselves. It's just a TV show - I watch it in my own way, I enjoy it in my own way, I leave the idiot fringe completely behind. Otherwise it becomes about filtering the show through other people first. What will they do, what will they say, how should I feel about this scene because of what other people will think about it - who cares?
  2. I don't see why it's an either/or for Sasha or Daryl. I really like both characters, and I think they both have valid reasons for their issues and their pain. I think either would be a real loss, but I do have a feeling Sasha's number may be up. I hope not. I thought the same about Carol last year and I was pleased to be wrong. I also think she's begun reconnecting more with her own emotions a bit, with Sam and such. She doesn't want to go back to being that vulnerable and feeling, but she is, bit by bit. They all are and they all have different reactions. Rick's is the worst and it's supposed to be. As to Rick, he's just being deconstructed. He's having a breakdown and I think they've made it abundantly clear in the writing and direction that nothing about his connection with Jessie at present is healthy. His fixation on her problem - and his unnaturally swift, superficial and domineering attraction to her - is just a symptom of his violent sort of struggle to reconnect with humanity and with any kind of civilization beyond the group's nearly primal, roving existence on the road. Thinking back over it in the last few days, I realized that this is something the show has been trying to reflect and refract throughout the whole of the season, but I think the split in the year has hurt them with illustrating that properly, the same way I felt Season 4 was quite good but suffered a bit from the split when it frontloaded a lot of separation episodes for the back end. I didn't mind the separation but a lot of people did, and I think that had to do with the mid-season cutoff point. Anyway, as to this year: The group started out fighting the cannibals of Terminus, who went to the bleeding edge of their survival instinct, where Rick is approaching right now - killing anything that wasn't them in order to preserve themselves. Then you had Dawn and the hospital in Atlanta, where they had this very regimented, brutal system which looked secure on the outside but was rotting away due to its own sick pathology as it struggled to show some semblance of order. Now you have Alexandria. Rick and the crew have seen Terminus, they've seen the hospital and now they're all reacting in different ways to yet another new setup, another new civilization. Rick has come to trust nothing but what he knows or can hold and protect and it's sent him into a really dark place. Jessie and her family and that whole situation are just a signifier. It's got nothing to do with a woman and nothing to do with abandoning his friends or his people or his family. His tunnel vision is about what he's been through, and I think they have totally sold it.
  3. I mean a split, and beyond that I don't know. They might add to the episode order to help with a split, who knows? It's their biggest show and they have been floating the split season as a possibility. And yeah, it doesn't bother me.
  4. I think it's more likely they'll start splitting them a la The Walking Dead. Which is a viable option.

  6. I think that moment was there to be strange and uncomfortable for all of us, really. I don't think it was a Nicholas Sparks declaration of love. It certainly wasn't shot or played that way, IMO. I think Jessie was a woman with a family in dire straits who barely knows Rick but wants out of her situation, and because of that, however unwittingly, she enabled him to go full-on. She doesn't know how sick he is. Jessie and those kids remind him of Lori and his own family, and he is flailing about in this unfamiliar environment which he can't get a handle on. He sees an immediate wrong he can deal with (Pete) and attacks it. The situation isn't helped by the fact that he and Carol are partially right - the Alexandra people have no idea how to survive, and no, Deanna shouldn't leave Pete to his own devices. But it's like Michonne and Glenn, and now even Daryl all say - 'there is no them and us, they are us.' They're all together now and they have to deal with it and learn to live and function another way, not just steamroll the weak. That's what this story is about, and they underlined that at the end of yesterday's show. They've paid very little attention to building any romance for Rick and Jessie because they aren't currently interested in building a real romance for Rick and Jessie. Jessie and her dilemma are just a plot means to an end for Rick's breakdown. There's always going to be stupid fans who see it differently, or snap polls written by interns for social media or whatever else, but the story they tell is there on the screen. And the way the show chose to produce it, play it and air it was: Alexandria is troubled but Rick is out of control and Michonne did what she had to do. She, Glenn, Daryl are all being played as the sanest, truest voices in the mix.

  8. I agree, and I think the whole story is about Rick (and Sasha, and all of them) coming to grips with that inner conflict. Ultimately they have to decide how they're going to live going forward. It's obvious this isn't about some Rick/Jessie romance. That whole instant drama is just symptomatic of his breakdown. They know how it plays and they have written and shot it accordingly. As of now, AFAIC, there's zero sign onscreen that this is a great love story you are supposed to be rooting for. It's all just part of Rick's sickness.
  9. These have been two pretty powerful episodes back to back, and I'm just very pleased with the whole Alexandria storyline. I said Rick was losing it and the show has clearly validated that - while it's absolutely correct Pete must be dealt with, I don't think there has ever been any intention by the show or the writers of presenting Rick's thing with Jessie as anything but a rushed desperation search for something grounded and comforting while a troubled man has a breakdown that has nothing to do with any woman. And that's clearly what tonight laid bare after hinting at it for several weeks. Next to Sasha, Rick is the one who has taken the new environment the hardest and it was right that Michonne took him down. A lot of what he says is correct, but he is not the right man to deliver the message or refit the community into what it should be. Not alone ,anyway. Noah's death, BTW, was like something out of Lucio Fulci's movies. I couldn't believe they put that on the air. Also, I think Carol is adorable with Sam and I loved how she was the first to key into that situation. I hope those two stick together but I am not betting on the poor kid's survival (or hers at this point - I dread who's next). The show is evolving in fascinating ways and I hope it continues. Michonne continues to be the soul and the conscience of so much of the group and she really works in that role, as opposed to the sort of cardboard action heroine of the comics. I also really like how they've developed Abraham and Rosita over the last handful of episodes - I'd genuinely be sad to see them go. Abraham looked right at home on the construction crew, and he was so winning in that environment. Now that he's not barking orders on a fool's crusade, Michael Cudlitz's natural, jocular geniality as an actor can come out (he was great in Band of Brothers). Christian Serratos was also wonderful with Danai Gurira and Sonequa Martin-Green. They have built her from nothing and she's begun to work for me. Granted, several of these characters have to have targets on their backs, but I hope they keep developing some of them. I fear this may be Sasha's last ride as she is unable to cope with her losses, but I said that about Carol in Season 4 after Karen and David and here we are. If it is she's had a good run. We'll see. Also: Chandler Riggs on the couch in the ad for the irrelevant talk show I will never watch. That kid looks more like the third lesbian member of Tegan & Sara every day.
  10. Kyle MacLachlan sounds optimistic in a recent interview: I suspect it is largely the distribution/sales part of Lynch's bargain with Showtime. But I'm sure it will be worked out. They have too much on the line now, in public, to let it go, and they know it would be picked up immediately by Netflix or anyone else. Mädchen Amick talks to Visionarios [sic] Magazine, and says Shelly took her back to her formative years in Reno. The magazine seems to be under the impression the show begins filming in April, but I didn't think it was til June or July.
  11. It seems very dramatic but it's standard negotiation ploys, honestly. They have far too much invested in this to walk away, they have signed at least the star (MacLachlan) and presented him live onstage to the assembled industry media at a major public event, and they've pinned their entire future prestige slate on this show. They believe it is what will make them a real contender opposite HBO and GOT.
  12. EW runs a piece with a source insisting all is well. I think it is just typical negotiation drama.
  13. It's starting to sound like this may just be what I thought - a negotiating tactic. Rumors are swirling that it may be about Lynch wanting a bigger chunk of the sales profits from Showtime. Creative control is not an issue, Lynch and Frost received that first. I expect he'll get whatever he wants and this is all kabuki. Or so I hope. If it's a cast issue that is also doable.

I'm a little shocked he had wanted to hang around given his upwards career trajectory even before TWD (he has a major role in last year's Dear White People), but either way, I think we can all agree it had nothing to do with some fanbase. I would've liked to have him around, but honestly the minute he showed up onscreen I was amazed he had taken the job. He's got a big future ahead of him.
  15. Where are these legions of angry Beth fans? I didn't know Noah ever had any hate, and I can't imagine the show cared anymore than I do. If they didn't off wildly polarizing characters like Lori or Andrea until they damn well felt like it they're sure not going to do anything they don't want to do for anyone else. These people are out of sight, out of mind. The dude left because he has a very up and coming career in film and television and because he got a CBS pilot on a sure to succeed procedural spinoff, end of story. Nobody cares about the Beth people. I keep forgetting there are Beth people. Somewhere, out there.
  16. He wouldn't have done the TCAs if he wasn't signed and official, AFAIK. He's also been very close to Lynch since Dune. Sherilyn I thought was fairly confirmed, and I also doubt she'd say no to Lynch. I imagine we'll know more within a few days, or it'll all be resolved.
  17. I'm 95% sure the series is happening - this isn't Prospect Park. Too much money has been sunk into it by Showtime, cast are signed, it did the TCAs and is supposed to shoot in three months. It could be delayed, but more likely it's about some of the cast salaries. There are rumors that some want more cash, but I really have no idea. Either way, it'll get done.
  18. The WTTP twitter is dropping a number of hints, and suggests "another cast confirmation would clear all doubts." This makes me wonder if it's a contract snag with one of the leads. It wouldn't be Kyle MacLachlan who I believe is signed and sealed and very enthusiastic on social media, but I can't imagine who would give them trouble - much of the core TP crew is a very tight-knit and devoted group who love Lynch. They couldn't possibly be over a barrel with Lara Flynn Boyle at this point, either.

  20. In other news, Mädchen Amick, Sheryl Lee and Kimmy Robertson still seem pretty happy together. Also: Jennifer Lynch directs tomorrow night's episode of The Walking Dead.

David Lynch gave a lot of us heart attacks this morning at his exhibition in Australia by suggesting (or leading some to suggest) that TP's fate might be in doubt, murkily mentioning something about contract negotiations. This is Welcome to Twin Peaks' report, which is constantly being updated and IMO has an entirely unnecessary and scaremongering headline: Another poster indicated this post from a fan on Facebook, which sounds reassuring. To my very limited knowledge, contracts have already been signed for the production and at least some of the cast (Kyle MacLachlan was already very publicly confirmed at the TCAs) and they are ready to go in May or June, so this could be either a) Lynch trying to play public hardball with someone over something, or Lynch being Lynch and just being fussy and not wanting to discuss it, leading to people getting worried over nothing.

    That's cute. He should do a guest spot sometime. They can afford it, they're still on the verge of using Peter Jackson as a director every year. That reminds me, you never did tell me how Episode 2 of Telltale's GOT game went for you. (Or TWD)
  23. Nicole Forrester was not untalented, but at the same time she was basically a nonentity on the show. I wasn't some big fan of Cassie, but she was a completely different character. It was bizarre.
  24. There is literally no one they can run against her. This email [!@#$%^&*] will be a dead issue in six months, let alone next year.
