Born in Sydney, Australia, Randell began a career in Australian radio at the age of 17 and moved into Australian theater with appearances in “There’s A Girl In My Soup,” “Of Mice & Men” and “The Voice of the Turtle.” In 1946, he starred in the motion picture “Smithy,” the story of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith’s historic Australia/Los Angeles flight. Retitled “Pacific Adventures” in the U.S., it caught the eye of Columbia Pictures czar Harry Cohn, who signed Randall to a film contract and brought him to Hollywood. His U.S. film debut was “It Had to Be You” in 1947 and he went on to appear in more than 30 films, including “The Sign of the Ram,” “The Loves of Carmen,” “Lorna Doone,” “Mississippi Gambler,” “Kiss Me Kate,” “I Am A Camera,” “The Story of Esther Costello,” “King of Kings,” “The Longest Day” and “Exposed.” He continued acting on Broadway as well, beginning in 1949 with “The Browning Version,” “Harlinquinade,” “Candida” and “Mrs. Warren’s Profession,” then was cast by Joshua Logan to star in “The World of Susie Wong.” His last Broadway productions were “Sherlock Holmes” and “Bent.” Randell also worked in British theater and television, as host of interview show “On the Town” and BBC’s “What’s My Line” and appearing in TV series “The Vice” and “OSS.” On American TV, he was a frequent gueststar in such series as “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” “Mission Impossible,” “Bewitched,” “Wild Wild West,” “The Rebels” and in daytime series “As the World Turns,” “One Life to Live,” “General Hospital” and “Search for Tomorrow.” Randell is survived by his wife of 48 years, actress Laya Raki. How many days must we endure cackling hen Steffy. I can't stand Hope, but day in and day out cackling from Steffy about winning ( with talentless Daphne and thoroughly miscast Greenlee Taylor) is torture. Fast forwarding day in and day out through most of this horribly written show. There's literally no one worth rooting for, and no likable characters. It's time for some other Forresters to be front and center. Steffy and Hope are both so beyond played out. Brooke's magic va-jay-jay is obviously on the fritz.

She had a cute supporting role in the "Hearts Around the Table: Jenna's First Love" last weekend, which rolled into this week's "Shari's Second Act" and will continue on in the next two weeks. She had some great Snark, but the real scene stealer was Mindy Cohn as the woman that fostered the characters. I don't blame them for bringing back Mishael for an ark, but I think she'd be much better served at BTG (JMO). She'll never get competent writing under Griffith. It will be great to see her back, but my expectations are low.

So, I have only read this thread as far as BTG goes. I've only read the casting notices because I wanted to have only unbiased opinions on the show up til now. I did take advantage of the castings to set up profiles in the Soap Hoppers thread -- which i also used over the holidays to get a feel for the many non- soap alumni. Surprisingly, I recognized most from works I'd already seen. I finished up that week more than impressed with the choices they made. One theory I haven't seen mentioned is that Keith G. Robinson could have possibly been the first choice for Ted, but he was tied in to a contract and Johnson was hired to film until Robinson was available. Johnson's been great so far in his scenes with Duplaix. He's very at ease with the rest of the Dupree/Hamilton/Richardson clan -- not to mention Eva and those scenes shared with Leslie, I would have expected him to be a keeper. Ben Gavin was my first thought for a recast, but I don't think the character will last through the summer. I think Jen Jacob will pick up steam once Derek goes or moves on (turns stalker?). My other casting question has been Alex Alegria. There's something off in his delivery or something. He's attractive, but something needs a fix. Especially if he's got a ton of scenes with Fairmont Crest's own version of spoiled Nellie Oleson. I so remember Robinson from American Dreams (post- Power Rangers)

Cosgrove will just be "there". He's a capable actor, but the last thing the show needs are more characters. Instead of hiring actors in roles that go nowhere and just never go away... (Looking at Wallow -- who should have been collateral damage as Dawn of Duh was ending) or hiring actors that just stink and then giving them a contract <cough> Molly <cough>., maybe write off a bit of dead weight and write for characters that are already there. Now if they could find a way to quickly drop Drew, Wallow, and Nina ( and Natalia) -- I could see more wiggle room. If you want to stunt cast former daytimers, ring them in for a two - three week story as a patient at the hospital like they used to do back in the day.

Photo by Carol Rosegg. On national tours, says out actress Beth Glover, she only plays “evil” roles. So naturally, in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, this month at the Hobby Center, she’s Madame, the vain, despotic (though oddly endearing) stepmother in gorgeous gowns by William Ivey Long. The last time Glover twirled through Houston, she says, “In All Shook Up, I was the mayor—a mean, bigoted, racist mother. I came to Jesus at the end of that.” She adds, “I am incredibly mean in this show,” but audiences should detect some sign of contrition by happily-ever-after. “I play her my way, trying to show glimpses of [her humanity and] the person she can be. But I don’t ask for forgiveness at the end—that wouldn’t be her personality.” Glover got used to gorgeous gowns as a “pageant girl” in Mississippi, where she was fourth runner-up at the state’s Junior Miss pageant in 1982. As Miss Southern in 1984, she was a top contender for Miss Mississippi, a preliminary to Miss America. But Glover says she was done in by a poor song choice in the talent competition. The pageant mom who made Glover’s gowns—“They were stunning,” she sighs—“asked me why, why my coach had me sing ‘Touch Me in the Morning.’ She said it was too sexual. It was one of the dumbest choices ever. They were staring at me.” Returning to the University of Southern Mississippi, Glover left pageants behind like a glass slipper and wrapped up her studies in broadcast journalism. With the scholarships she won in pageants, says Glover, “My parents didn’t have to pay a dime for my schooling.” In classic over-achiever fashion, Glover landed in the newsroom at Cable News Network (CNN) in Atlanta, just as Ted Turner was revolutionizing television journalism with 24-hour cable news. “It was incredibly exciting,” she says. And though her internship came with “no promise of a job,” Glover got hired—and promoted three times in the next two years. However, she says, “I absolutely heard a voice—I heard an actual voice—and it said, ‘You’re in the wrong place.’” She explains, “Whether you believe in God or the universe or trusting your gut, or all of that, I believe that if you listen, you’re going to be put on the right track.” Glover’s gut told her to strike out for New York City and study acting. CNN didn’t want to lose her, so it transferred her to the Big Apple, and she stayed in news for her first year as a drama student. During her second year in New York, Glover left CNN and shed any doubts about her sexual orientation. “I had dated women in college, but I thought it might just be a phase,” she says. “But I realized, ‘I’m gay.’” Her parents had opposite reactions to Glover’s coming out. “My dad ran a little theater, so he was around gay people the whole time I was growing up,” she explains. “He said, ‘Oh? Who are you dating? Can I meet her?’ He was just my daddy.” In contrast, it took a while for Glover’s mother to come around. “Eventually, she did a full 180,” says the actress, who is married to Karen Lewis, a writer who won Emmy Awards for All My Children, including one in the late 1980s for a groundbreaking storyline about AIDS. “It was perfect. It was fabulous,” boasts Glover. “Karen wanted to [write an AIDS storyline] in tribute to her dear, dear friend Matt who died with AIDS.” After the network rejected Lewis’ first storyline involving a gay male character, she had angelic Cindy Parker contract HIV from her husband, an IV drug user. Adam Chandler’s lovable identical twin, Stuart, married Cindy and adopted her son, Scott. Ratings went through the roof, and Ellen Wheeler (as Cindy), David Canary (as Adam/Stuart), and the All My Children writing team won Emmy Awards in an emotional, televised ceremony in 1988. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella was nominated for nine Tony Awards in 2013, including best musical revival, book (for out playwright Douglas Carter Beane), leading actor, leading actress, featured actress, lighting, sound, orchestrations, and costumes—the 14th nod for out costuming legend William Ivey Long. He won the Tony (his sixth), but Beane lost to Harvey Fierstein’s book for Kinky Boots and consoled himself with Nathan Lane’s Best Leading Actor nomination for Beane’s play The Nance. Beane’s book is a big reason Glover wanted to be in the show. “I love it,” she says. “It’s very contemporary. The audiences gasp at some of the changes. I can’t tell you them—they’re surprises—but Cinderella is empowered. There’s more to this than little girls leaving the show thinking, ‘If I’m pretty, I’ll get the Prince.’ “I wish the title said, ‘Something for Everyone,’” adds Glover, “because every generation gets something out of the show. Mothers know the score. Little boys like the prince and his armor, and he fights. The set is so rich; the forest is magical.” The lush production is based on a television special that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II composed in 1957 for Julie Andrews, who was Broadway’s newest star in My Fair Lady. A stage version of the musical premiered in 1958 at the London Coliseum. The day that Glover graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, she landed both an agent and a role in the touring company of the off-Broadway hit The Taffetas. Her next agent advised her not to live openly, but she refused. “I acted like a person in a relationship,” she explains. “My girlfriend would come to my shows. It was the ’90s and I was out, so every kid coming through the theater who was kind of grappling with their sexuality, I would have them in my dressing room” seeking advice and support. Glover met Lewis about 20 years ago. “She’s from Alexandria, Virginia, and she kept telling me she’s Southern, and I kept telling her she’s not,” says Glover. “You and I know she’s not.” Indeed, we know that “Southern” is Blanche DuBois, the Tennessee Williams heroine whose portrait by Glover is one of her greatest triumphs. Another was playing Edith Bouvier Beale and Little Edie Beale in Grey Gardens, winning Best Leading Actress in a Musical from the San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle. Times Archives Jan. 19, 2006 12 AM PT From Times Staff and Wire Reports Don Stewart, 70, a stage and screen actor best known for portraying Michael Bauer for 16 years on the CBS soap opera “Guiding Light,” died Jan. 9 at his Santa Barbara home. He had been battling lung cancer and aplastic anemia. After joining “Guiding Light” in 1968, Bauer was once voted the most popular actor in daytime television. While on the show, he also performed in musical theater and solo concerts and had a nightclub act. Stewart was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and grew up in Norfolk, Neb. He served as a pilot in the Air Force for six years before he left to pursue a career as an actor and singer. He continued to fly with the Naval Reserves. After leaving “Guiding Light” in 1984, Stewart moved to California. His nearly 20 films include “Lost” (1983), “American Ninja” (1985) and the television movie “The Betty Ford Story” (1987).
