  1. Which is to some extent the exact role he played here, except patriarch who transitioned. I could only watch the first season because I thought the show was so sad. All of the kids were so screwed up and unhappy and I didn't feel a lot of hope in Maura's situation. I guess it was a realistic look at the life of a 70 year old trans woman who doesn't have Caitlyn Jenner's fame and money though. I am sorry people lost their jobs and trans people lost some representation though.
  2. Back to the dark ages one step a time.
  3. ^ The corruption is endless.
  4. That's a great way to put it. Someone on twitter said that about 30% of the adult population has been brainwashed by Fox and conservative radio to the point of no return. That rang true to me. It's heartbreaking. We could have had such a decent society. So much seemed possible even a decade ago and now we are just fighting not to slip into the worst of our past.
  5. It's a type of bullying. Some people are really getting off on trying to make other people feel less than. They think it's socially acceptable now. F*ck her. It's too bad someone didn't take a video and give it to her boss. Shaming these people doesn't work as well as it once did, but most businesses don't want to alienate customers.
  6. If I'm honest this tweet made me laugh. I've always had a weakness for gallows humor. I just hope this doesn't end in blood. I really wonder at the arrogance of a "man of God" who honestly seems to think more than half the world's population is going to hell, but he's good.
  7. This. Remember KJU made an unexpected trip to Beijing just a couple of weeks before things settled down. I bet the Chinese called him in and took him to task. Meanwhile, Trump then starts **** with Iran.
  8. This is one of the worst things I've seen in terms of discrimination, although I had to look it up to make sure it hadn't happened in NY as opposed to Israel. I cried when I first heard about it. http://www.israelhayom.com/2016/12/08/activist-urges-probe-of-trial-circumcisions-on-ethiopian-babies/
  9. Not really news but an interesting article. Which civil rights are they being denied? I knew they existed and that there is discrimination, but I hadn't heard about a lack of civil rights.
  10. Yes, it is wrong for them to turn away refugees. It's just that I'm having a hard time figuring out which country has the moral high ground from which to judge. Canada maybe? Germany to some extent. When people call Israel an apartheid state I figure they are talking about the fact that they (sort of) control Gaza and the West Bank, but those people can't vote.
  11. I read an article predicting this outcome a few weeks ago. Israel is our ally so this was the way foreign policy experts expected Iran to take revenge. Israel is our client state. That's why we generally take their side. It's not out of the goodness of our hearts. Even when Obama was in charge they got massive aid packages, because they are useful to us. I wouldn't say I trust them exactly. It depends on the context. That said, I am pretty unequivocally on the side of Israel, which isn't to say that I think everything they do is right. Still, if Gaza were on the US boarder with Hamas sending (and paying) terrorists to kill our civilians, we would have bombed it out of existence long ago. Look at how many countries we've carpet bombed for far less.
  12. Lord help us.
  13. Not a very capable one lately. I wonder if anyone in this administration can even articulate the plan. I doubt it since I don't believe there is one. I don't really think it's the fault of the Saudi's or the Israeli's. How can we blame other countries for decisions made by our own bad government? They lobbied for what they believe is in their own best interests. That's what foreign governments do. The buck stops in DC as far as I can see. If you believe that we would have a different government if not for Russian interference, then I would say some of the blame goes to them as well.
  14. ^ This whole thing is already so ugly. It's clearly going to get worse. I only hope that the people who deserve jail get it, but I also won't be surprised if the mask totally slips from the Republicans and they try to subvert justice entirely.
  15. Right. I think it depends on the criteria we're using to evaluate. More people are dead because of W and those around him. We set Iraq on fire under his regime when they basically did nothing to us. Some estimates put the number of dead around 1 million, if you count lack of food and medicine due to the war.
  16. That's awful. It's terrible that so many women's prospects have been impacted by these entitled men. Even though some have been rooted out I think there is an endless stream of them. It's disgusting.
  17. I certainly think there's a case to be made for Andrew Jackson. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/04/11/hunting-down-runaway-slaves-the-cruel-ads-of-andrew-jackson-and-the-master-class/?utm_term=.22a182c61d88
  18. I don't. At this point it's clear to me that there are some very violent men of all political persuasions. I might consider a set up for anyone in power accused by only one person. In this case the women involved told people at the time it happened, so it seems pretty clearly true. I bet there will be a few more victims coming forward before it's over. The ones coming forward in this case were very brave. I doubt I would have had the nerve because this is the kind of guy who can and will make your life hell. Thank God he's been stripped of his official power.
  19. And they got it and brought it to the rest of us.
  20. ^ Holy $hit. These women coming forward against him are incredibly brave. That's always true of survivors who come forward, but when you take on a guy with this much power, there is so much reason to be afraid. Schneiderman was elected to the New York State Senate in 1998, and served for twelve years. He wrote many laws, including one that created specific penalties for strangulation. He introduced the bill in 2010 I find this especially creepy. It seems like he had a specific fascination with strangulation.
  21. This is an interesting article. Even if we rid ourselves of Trump, parts of the world are going to be worse off long after.
  22. This one's for you Khan.
