  1. It seems there is a lot of late 70's/early 80's material for all the other soaps on youtube, except Y&R.

I have a DVD that has like a Y&R music video on it circa 1982. It is the vocal theme playing and they are showing random clips of the show. They show Deborah Adair's Jill kissing John Abbott on a picnic, Paul breaking a mirror in anger while he is undercover in the mob, Leslie Brooks playing the piano for Robert Lawrence, Chris Brooks Foster modeling, Nikki on a plane and is clearly pregnant etc.........

  2. It cannot be repeated enough: save those vids while you can! It is really easy to download stuff from YouTube - do it, folks!

We aren't always that lucky like with you, Y&Rfan23, that you take the time and effort to reupload stuff. It is downright criminal what great episodes/scenes CBS has killed on YouTube… Just think about formicida (?) - the Sheila channel. Deleted TWICE, everything gone. sad.png

There was a complete 1975 episode of Y&R at one time about Bill Foster retruning home terminally ill/Phillip asks Kay for the divorce/Leslie finds out Laurie is writing a book about her mental breakdown. It was deleted. It then was uploaded by another poster then was deleted yet again.

These vintage 70's/80's/90's episodes are rotting in a back room at CBS to never see the light of day again, and they get pissed about home video recordings being shared on youtube. I think that if it's a home recording that is at least over 10-15 years old, it should be public domain and be free from any copyright claims.

Speaking of uploading, what program do you use to burn the episodes from DVD to your computer ?

  3. He was just the Jabot dayplayer photographer and already replaced in1986/1987 with the dude (Skip?) who later married Jabot secretary Carol. There was no real attempt to build up any family relationship between Joe and Cricket.

I remember when Joe was on, but I just wondered why they never built his character up. Yes, Joe was replaced by Skip (who was played by Todd Curtis from Capitol). Skip married Carol and they adopted a child. They went through a custody battle then dropped off canvas. Before Skip came to town, Carol mooned over Terry Lester's Jack.

  4. Ashley is an interesting one with her screen partners. Brian as you said disappeared about the time Eric Garrison turned up in 1983, then Ashley wasn't sure about her relationship with Eric, In 1984 she went to Italy and met Frenchman Marc Megeron and eventually paired up with him a few months later, which didn't last long as the whole Ashley/Victor romance began in 1985.

I am also curious about James Houghton being on the writing staff, I have seen his name a few times on credits, I assume it is the same actor who played Greg initially.

    Yes James was Greg # 1 (1973-1976).

Bill seemed hard pressed to find Eileen Davidson someone he thought she had chemistry with. I thought she had great chemistry with Rod Arrants who played Ashley's first husband Steven. Eileen loved working with him, then they killed him off.

  5. Yes, it was. He wrote for the show for a lot of the 90s and up to part of the 00s I think. Wasn't he one of those pushed out by LML?

Yes, LML pushed him out. James has a sister Mona Houghton who is also a writer. She wrote for Y&R and several other soaps. She and Jim wrote some Knots Landing shows as well.

I wonder how James version of Greg would have worked with Nikki. I always thought Wings Hauser wasn't soap material. He was too skeezy looking.

  6. Stuart apparently died off screen of a heart attack, not sure when this was mentioned, and that is why Liz moved to England to be with Chris, Snapper and Jennifer. I think Colbert stopped airing sometime in 1983 and McCarthy stayed on recurring until around 1985. I am almost sure she was gone by the time Jill's affair with Jack was uncovered.

Yeah 1982 is interesting as everything was shifting. I think Tom Ligon and Lynn Topping were supposed to stay, then JLB left and they were off the show almost straight after, along with Howard McGillan. Only Victoria Mallory was there until the very end of 1982. Robert Colbert and Julianna McCarthy were around but as recurring characters.

I am also interested in Nick Benedict, in all the interviews he did, it seemed he was supposed to be a main character and on the show for quite a few years, when he and Meg Bennett got the pink slip, they both seemed shocked and unhappy about it, more Nick than Meg. I wonder what Bell had in mind.

I don't know why they let Nick Benedict go either. Bill Bell wanted to hold on to Eric Braeden and redeem the character of Victor so viewers would warm up to him. So maybe he wanted to get rid of the Michael character and quickly forget that storyline ever happened. I remember an old interview where Bill Bell said he was fond of Meg and wrote her into a corner and didn't know what to do with her. He then asked her if she had considered writing since he saw her handy work at doing some rewrites onset when a scene wasn't going well. Viewers then started seeing her name in the writing credits and wrote in asking if they would see Julia again. Meg then pulled double duty recurring till the end of the 80's.

I didn't know they were wanting to keep Tom Ligon. I wonder where they would have taken Lucas if he had stayed on.

In 1982 shorty after Ashley and Traci's arrival, they introduced a character named Brian Forbes that worked in the Jabot lab. He and Ashley became a couple till early 1983 then he went to make a phone call and never came back. Bill Bell's writing was all over the place at that time and seemed he couldn't make up his mind what to do with the over bloated cast.

  7. In 1982 Nikki was with Victor, got pregnant and was pushed to marry Kevin Bancroft, Nikki and Greg may have shared a scene together but no storyline. Howard's Greg didn't have much story, they re-introduced his unrequited love for Chris Brooks, which didn't go anywhere, then Chris left town in September and Greg left, I think the same week. Howard came on when all the original characters were being shipped off the show.

I think Wings Hauser left around late Oct 1981 and Howard was on by Nov 1981.

Yes, I remember preppy blonde Kevin Bancroft. He had that 80's Ted McGinley type look. Kevin and Nikki fought like cats and dogs. His psycho mother Allison was always trying to break them up.

Your right about Greg going after Chris again. I think that helped drive a further wedge between Stu and Liz since Stu told him to go after her. Stuart told Liz he wished Chris had married Greg instead of Snapper. I don't think the show ever resolved what happened to Stuart Brooks. He was gone by 1984 and Liz reverted to using Foster as her last name.

I wish some 1982 episodes would surface. That was a period of a mixed bag of new and old characters. I have a copy of the one 1982 episode that's in fragments on youtube with John talking to Patty about Jack not going to marry her and Jack and Diane are carrying on. John also offers Chris Brooks Foster a job as a model and Snapper says goodbye to Chuckie. I wonder what Bill Bell had in mind with Chris working for Jabot before he wrote the character out all together ?

It's funny how there is quite a bit of late 70's/early 80's AMC, GH & Days material on youtube, but hardly anything pre 1984 for Y&R. I assume there had to be fans with VCR's that were taping Y&R if there is other soap material from that time period.

  8. If I remember correctly, there was a storyline where a young girl played by Doug Davidson's wife Cindy (this is how she and Doug met), stole an expensive car and came to Brock to ask him to defend her. Brock told her they would talk to the owner and maybe they would be understanding. Victor showed up and demanded she be prosecuted. Julia was sympathetic towards the girl and wanted to forget it. Victor was a bully and Julia was afraid of him. In court Brock made Victor leave the room and Julia told her side of the story. The charges were dropped. Later Julia wound up in the hospital from a fall. Snapper & Casey told Brock that Mrs. Newman had been brought in. (hinting at domestic violence before it was dopped after Bill Bell became smitten with Eric Braeden and wanted to keep him on the show).

Julia was like a bird in a cage and was mostly at the ranch by herself. I think Casey got her a job in the hospital gift shop before Victor put the kabosh on that. Eve Howard was also brought on and revealed to Julia she and Victor had an affair and was the father of Cole.

Brock & Julia grew close. Victor hated Brock. There was also some crap where there was a break in at the ranch and Victor taught Julia to use a gun for self defense. I think the plan was for Victor to set Brock up to come to the ranch and have Julia accidentaly shoot him thinking it was a prowler. Later Brock saw Victor with Laurie Brooks and he decided to persue his feelings for Julia. Julia couldn't bring herself to leave Victor. She married him at 16 and they had been married ten years at that point. Beau Kayser decided not to renew his contract at this point since the show was now an hour long. The character of Michael Scott was brought into the Victor/Julia story and then it proceeded in to the dungeon in the basment storyline.

I can't remember if Greg and Nikki interacted much if at all after she took up with Victor. Greg was upset when she started stripping at the Bayou and wanted her to stop even though they were no longer married. I also think when the Edward stalker story started, Greg was having headaches and it was hinted maybe he was the one sending her crazy stalking notes since he still cared about her.

Wings Hauser had left the role around late 1981 and Howard McGillin came on as Greg and stayed into late 1982. I can't recall what his storyline was or if his version interacted with Nikki.

  9. I have been watching the final season of the old 60's sitcom Hazel. I read that Ray Fulmer who played Steve Baxter that final season was on Somerset. Fulmer also played the role of Lee Gantry on Guiding Light in the late 60's/early 70's.

Lynn Borden who played Fulmer's wife Barbara Baxter on Hazel is listed as having a role on General Hospital in the early 60's.

  10. 1979-83 period also included the 1981 storyline of Victor going psycho over Julia and building the bomb shelter in basement and locking Michael in. I think they also had him serve him rats on a platter like Baby Jane.

Eve Howard also turned up to try and kill Victor in 1983 and Victor faked his death.

  11. Thank you so much for finding that. I will have to watch those before they're taken down. More of 1987 is especially wonderful (Faren isnt't singing is she...? Eh)

Anyway, Vee mentioned this article in the status updates. MTS chooses her five craziest Nikki moments. Some of these clips are very rare - I'd never seen them.

Those vintage Nikki clips are great. I cracked up when Addison was doing his heart attack and final collapse in the hotel room. Someone posted that it reminded them of something that Harvey Korman would have done of the Carol Burnett Show......LOL

According to IMDB ,Paul Savior who played Walter Addison is a soap veteran appearing on several shows dating back to Love of Life in the 60's.

  12. A while back when the 1974 Y&R episode was posted there were several people asking who was the actress who played Katherine's maid Teresa.

Today I was watching a 1970 episode of Adam-12 and she popped up. Her name is Ann Morrison. IMDB lists she died in 1978. In the A-12 episode she played a woman who's house is broken into. It turns out it was a member of her bridge groups son. The son was played by Butch Patrick and his mother was played by GH's Norma Connolly who had a theft raquet going to keep up her ritzy lifefestyle. Also according to IMDB Ann played a character named Mrs. Nelson on GH in 1971.

  13. Thanks.

I'd forgotten Tom was 15 on the show at one point. I'd just sort of assumed that he went from a kid to an adult back from Vietnam.

According to the cast list, Tom at this time was played by Paul "O'Keefe who was Ross on the Patty Duke Show. I also noticed Dan was being played by Stephen Mines. Stephen played Moondoggie on the 1965-66 series Gidget with Sally Field. I saw that Mines is on eBay selling autograph photos from his career and wood crafted items he makes in his workshop. Someone should email him and ask about his time on ATWT.

  14. This comment from Considine makes sense as to why we see Donnely Rhodes with a moustache and gray temples. Donnely Rhodes was only 2 years younger than Considine, but Rhodes was only 37 years old When he debuted, a full 10 years younger than Jeanne. Michael Muhney right now is a YEAR OLDER than Donnelly Rhodes was at the time, mull THAT around for a minute.

I know it's kind of freaky. People looked so much older back then. Most of the cast at that time were in their 20's and they looked so much older and sophisticated than what 20 somethings do now. Robert Colbert who played Stuart was 42 when the show started. Dorothy Green who played Jennifer was 11 years older than Bob.

Speaking of Donnelly Rhodes, I remember seeing the scene where Kay was drunk and signed the divorce papers and noticed he has this Kennedy accent thing going on. I remember he had a line that went " Kay, I told you when I telephoned you".....and I could picture one of the Kennedy's saying something like that.

  15. So Considine was cast before Cooper. Way back in this thread, there was mention(I think) that Phillip appeared before Katherine though I can't see how that would play. Phillip being younger than Katherine could have been worked into the story and made her seem more desperate. I can't think of anyone else who was recast on Y&R until Espy,Houghton and Lynde left.

That's how Considine words it in his book. I know Kay was said to of first appeared in November 73, I just wonder who the Chancellors interacted with prior to Jill. Did they just appear in sole scenes together as a couple with their marriage on the rocks or did they have dealings with other characters like the Brooks ? In the January 1974 filmed episode Jill talks about having done Kay's hair after the other girl had problems with her, but I doubt 2 or more months had elapsed sine they first met.

  16. I did a little research and found out why John Considine was released from Y&R as the original Phillip Chancellor. I found out he had written an autobiography of his life and looked at the preview sample on amazon.

He said when Jeanne was cast (who he referred to as the fabulous Jeanne Cooper and the anchor that has kept Y&R going), they thought he looked way too young to be her husband and started applying heavy makeup to him look older. He said within weeks they gave him his walking papers. He said he had never been fired from a job and it hurt him to lose Y&R.

He then tells an amusing story of being cast on Bright Promise. He said another actor who he refused to name on the show convinced him to smoke pot before taping in his dressing room. They were taping live and he had a scene in the lab where he was telling another character the latin names of the rodents. He said when he got to the last name he couldn't remember and started to mentally freak out. He said he almost said cunnilingus as the name because the word kept popping in his head. He said he made up name and got through the scene some how....LOL After that he said he never use any mind altering substance again before a performance. He did mention Tony Geary was on the show with him ( I wonder if he was the pot pusher hmmmm).

  17. I have to say I think I watched this episode about 7 times by now! LOL

So what I'm also wondering, if Snapper had just gotten married to Chris around this time, wouldn't the Brooks be able to help out the Fosters with their financial problems? at the same time I can see them offering to help and Liz declining but I was just curious.

You are not the only one that has watched this multiple times. I love the background music, especially the theme playing when Jill is looking at the magazine daydreaming before Hazel comes in. I could put that on a loop and listen to it over and over. I remember them using most of the 70's themes on up to the 90's. It's a shame they got stupid and dumped them. I started watching the show as a child around 1979/80. The opening credits with the sketches was used up till 1988 when artist Sandy DeVore retired and they switched to the live action shots. They have kept Sandy's Y&R logo that debuted around 1984.

I wondered that too if the Brooks wanted to help the Fosters. I know Stuart wanted to help Snapper & Chris many times, but Snapper's pride wouldn't let him accept charity. Stuart & Snapper were often at odds due to the fact that Snapper fathered Sally's baby out of wedlock. Stuart also felt that Greg was the better match for his daughter Chris and encouraged him to persue her several times over the years. There was a stupid soryline in the early 80's where Chris wanted new furniture and Stuart gave Chris the money to redecorate. Snapper had a fit and I think she wound up having to take everything back. Stuart also suggested one time she and Snapper move into the Brooks home and he get himself a place to live. Snapper told him to shove it.

  18. I forgot to ask, since Kay made her debut in November 1973, did she interact with any of the other characters on the show prior to meeting Jill ? Did Kay know the Brooks at this point ? I think it would have been interesting had she been friends with Jennifer.

  19. Alphanguy74 Thank you so much for this awesome episode. I love everything about it. Hearing the vintage lush background music makes me sad they no longer use it on the show. Little did Kay know that the minute Jill stepped foot in her home, her life would never be the same again.

I wonder why they replaced John Considine as Phillip ? If he had stayed in the role, they could have gotten his brother Tim to play his brother on the show.

I noticed that it being taped live the Mrs.Foster/Mrs.Chancellor flub by Brenda and the music edit when they skipped ahead to the part of the song they wanted to finish the closing scene with Jill.

  20. I hope some more 70's episodes show up. I would love to see Leslie's mental breakdown episodes and Nikki & Greg Fosters 1979 complete wedding in the Brooks house even though I never cared for Wings Hauser. I wonder if Nikki & Greg may have lasted longer if James Houghton had stayed in the role.

  21. I just saw it.. WOW. I never knew she did anything like that. That was some pretty heavy stuff. One thing I loved about this Y&R episode is how Lorie was trying to blame Leslie for Brad not practicing medicine, and Leslie turned it around and made her SQUIRM. this was AFTER Leslie had been in the mental institution, and yet here Lorie is, trying to saddle her with psychological guilt. also, one thing that made the Peggy scenes so emotional is that a few weeks before this, Peggy had told her mother that she wished she were dead, that's why Jennifer hid her condition from Peg, because she knew how much guilt and turmoil it would cause for her. Peggy wasn't told until the biopsy came back positive and surgery was certain. The scenes where Jennifer is waking up, once again.. CREEPY AS HELL, it's amazing to see just how this show was just a couple steps above Dark Shadows, it's just so very dark, and that's what made it so special. When they try and do darkness today, it always falls flat, because the show isn't produced right for it. Also, look at Pamela Peters compared to the young actresses on the show today. MILES ahead in talent, not one young actress on Y&R today comes even close to being that good, that engrossing.

Thanks for the classic episode. I agree, Jennifer coming out of it was creepy. The way she was moaning and crying was chilling and Snapper trying to talk to her and pulling her hand off her chest. Dorothy Green should have won an award for her performances during this storyline. I can't believe Bill Bell got rid of her and killed off the character just a few years later.

Lorie had her nerve talking to Leslie that way after she caused her to have a mental breakdown. Janice Lynde was so good. Victoria Mallory in the role was mediocre at best.

    Top notch acting all around.
