Yes, that was the "official" reason given. Apparently it was the head of daytime that encouraged them to use a great deal of popular music during that time. Besides the copyright music expenses, residuals could have also been part of it. Many years ago, Ilene Kristen told a poster at the old Soapnet forum she couldn't wait for 1982 episodes to begin on Soapnet so she'd start making some real money off them. Of course, Soapnet rebooted every time before it ever got to those episodes. And another poster, who was a huge Pater Haskell (Hollis) fan, had become friends with Peter and his wife. She had lunch with them and when she told him she was excited that his episodes would be coming up in a few months (this was back in 2007) - - he told her that the contracts beginning in 1982 (the year he joined the show) had residual payment clauses for the actors and he doubted Soapnet would ever air the 1982- 1989 episodes for that very reason.

DRW50 said Also in the movie, Lovespell, were Diana Van Der Vlis (Nell. Sherry), Kathryn Dowling ( years before she played Lily Darnell #2 on RH), and John Scanlon (JP, the original Ryan's Bar bartender when the series began) I knew the movie was made quite a few years before it's 1981 release date, but had no idea it was made back when Kate was still on RH. Someone had posted on the old Soapnet forum that in 1979 Claire Labine was very distracted by another project and the show seemed to suffer because of that so I thought that was the year she made the movie (and Kate's official website, Totally Kate lists filmed the movie as being filmed in 1979 ) but that had to be some other project Claire was working on because it doesn't fit with Kate's timeline of the film. There was another timeline issue for me. Kate said her mother came to visit her in Ireland to celebrate her 21st birthday while she was filming Lovespell ( Kate's birthday is April 29, 1955 ) Kate, later in the chapter, says how hard it was for her adjust back to New York after she returned home from filming. She said boyfriend David* suggested, soon after she got home, they should go away to a B&B for the weekend and that was when & where Kate said she became pregnant. Kate gave birth in early May of 1977 so that would be a late July conception date. So, she was filming Love Spell in Ireland from some time in April until some time in July of 1976 -- she certainly wasn't missing from the RH screen at all during those many months *Kate's boyfriend name in all the soap magazine back during RH had been given named Ben – in her book she says her boyfriend's name was David (with a completely different last name, too)

And that wasn't even a legal marriage. Jill and Frank went off by themselves and legally got married off camera in January of 1984. I wonder whose idea it was for the hospital bedside wedding and the off-camera ceremony (this one would have been written Pat Falken Smith ) because in 1983 both Nancy Addison and Claire Labine said Jill and Frank should have a big, big wedding.

I don’t recall anything about Dallas. She only talked briefly about Mrs. Colombo. At that first meting with Fred Silverman and others, Kate blurted out that Peter Falk was old enough to be her father (and her grandfather). They explained the concept to her. She politely declined... she wanted to do theater (she explained earlier in that chapter that being on Ryan's Hope had confirmed her suspicion that TV did not fulfill her creatively) Her manager had her talk to Fred again, There were what she called extravagant promises made (she does not go into any details of the those promises) and so she said it was an offer she couldn't refuse. The main thing she said was she worked 7 days a week and that left her weary and sleep deprived (that had her sneaking naps wherever, and whenever, she could) She called Mrs. Columbo TV series well intentioned but misguided.

I'm about a quarter of the way through Kate Mulgrew's new book. Some RH related items Up first, this cute tidbit -- Kate was devastated to learn that her Our Town (1975 play she appeared in) co-star, Richard Backus (later Barry Ryan on RH) was married with children because she thought that it would be his professional duty to fall in love with her the same way his character falls for her character. She talks about her fist meeting with Claire and about her screen test. Kate on Mary ...Mary Ryan in particular attracted a diverse and sweeping viewership. Women of every stripe tuned in to see what Mary would do next. They loved her because she was an independent spirit, unafraid to speak her mind, passionate, impetuous, and brave. Seldom lauded for her beauty, Mary had something else to offer, something women could grab hold of and understand. She had a powerful sense of self and this proved more magnetic and more relatable than any other single quality. Claire poured her heart and most of her own unique qualities into the character of Mary Ryan. Claire was Mary Ryan, and Mary Ryan was, in many ways, me (Kate). And mentions how her friendship with Claire has deepened over the years. Kate describes Nancy Addison as a dazzling beauty and as a salacious gossip (who fascinated Kate’s sister) Although Kate and Nancy were from two different world, she says she and Nancy were partners in crime. Kate tells Claire that she is pregnant and may have to quit the show. She also tells her that she is having the baby and then putting it up for adoption. They talk, and then, right there, is when Claire came up with the whole Mary & Jack storyline. Claire tells Kate that Mary will find herself pregnant, too. Jack won't want to be a father and they'll break-up. Claire continues on saying that Mary will have the baby (a girl, of course) and Claire even named the baby Ryan Fenelli during that first discussion upon learning Kate was pregnant! Kate says the ratings soared because of Mary's trials and how Mary handled them with courage. Kate returned to work 3 days after giving birth (!) to shoot one scene. She says that was the episode where Mary and baby Ryan came home from the hospital. Wasn't that around the time when the ABC camera operators were on strike? That would explain shooting episodes out of order because Kate's Mary had a number of episodes while Mary was still in the hospital after giving birth (Kate's Mary talked with Sister Mary Joel, talked to Jumbo, talked to Faith, talked to Tom, she reacted to Delia losing Little John in the park - and Kate no longer looked pregnant in those scenes) before she came home. At that point of time in the show, Kate says the ratings are sagging. Seems like the ratings soared, and then sagged, awfully fast.
