  1. Ratings are typically lower on holidays, and depending on the holiday, ad revenue is generally lower due to the depreciated audience. Sometimes in the past networks would air new content on Thanksgiving or Christmas because they could still get respectable ratings for their more popular shows at higher ad rates but that's not happened in decades practically.
  2. For the first time in 24 years, Julie Che Moonves will not welcome the latest person evicted from the “Big Brother” house following news that the reality show’s veteran host has tested positive for COVID-19. “The Talk” co-host Jerry O’Connell will step in for Chen during the Thursday, September 12 live eviction episode. Julie Chen Moonves Sonja Flemming/CBS In an Instagram post, Chen said, “Friday morning, I woke up with a sore throat and went to see my good friend who is an ENT [Ear, Nose, Throat physician]. That night he called to say I have COVID. Thankfully this is only the second time for me and it’s been very mild! No fever and just a sore throat. “Unfortunately, I am still testing positive as of this morning… despite feeling good, strong and my cough being gone, I must sit tonight’s ‘Big Brother’ live eviction out.” Noting that O’Connell will step in for her, Chen joked, “I hope Jerry fits into my dress, has a ball and tells the houseguests I miss them but will be watching from home. See? Chenbot is human after all! Love one another and enjoy tonight’s show.” In addition to her “Big Brother” duties, Chen Moonves previously served as moderator of “The Talk” during the show’s first eight seasons (2010-2018). O’Connell joined the daytime talk show’s panel of hosts in 2021 at the launch of Season 12. In an Instagram post, O’Connell teased his appearance as the fill-in host of “Big Brother,” saying, “Jerry O’Connell here; I’m one of the hosts of ‘The Talk.’ Tonight, I’m going to be the substitute teacher for ‘Big Brother.’ Julie Chen Moonves is a little under the weather, we love her.” The live eviction episode of “Big Brother” airs Thursday, September 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS. 3. While already set to appear in the upcoming 15,000th episode of “Days of our Lives,” releasing later this year on Peacock, Kristian Alfonso will again reprise her role as Hope Brady alongside long-time co-star Peter Reckell, who portrays Bo Brady, for a story arc slated to air next year on the streaming service. According to TV Insider, which first reported the news, Alfonso and Reckell are actively taping episodes “for a special story arc” that will air in May 2025. The actors last appeared on screen together in April 2023 when Bo fell into a coma after being shot by his son, Shawn (Brandon Beemer). That storyline twist left a sour taste in the mouths of fans and saw current breakdown writer Jamey Giddens (“Ambitions,” “Tyler Perry’s Sistas”) take to X (formerly Twitter) to defend now former head writer Ron Carlivati who had been receiving backlash. In an April 27, 2023 post, Giddens revealed, “Ron pitched a Happily Ever After where the couple reunited, returned to Salem, saw Doug, Julie & Victor then went off to hunt Megan. For whatever reason, that story wasn’t approved.” His post was in response to one of the show’s fans who directed their ire at the writing team, saying, “@Jamey_Giddens Got to ask because I’m just curious? Why do the Days writers dislike the Bo and Hope fans?! We have been a loyal and dedicated fanbase for forty (40) years and to get a payoff like this after all the hype and time! Feels, like another 2015 slap in the face!” In July, it was announced that Carlivati would be exiting the show as head writer after a seven-year run. He was immediately replaced by new co-head writers Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie. “My material will continue to air through April of 2025, so I really hope you enjoy what’s coming!” said Carlivati to TV Insider. Peter Reckell, Kristian Alfonso @kristianalfonso/Instagram As for Bo and Hope’s return this time around, it looks like their reunion will help put fans at ease, with Reckell telling TV Insider, “[It’s] just like riding a bike,” in reference to playing his character again. He added, “And thank goodness they keep one at the ready for me in Salem. This ride is one we know the fans are really going to love. Stay tuned!” “There is a saying I love: ‘Life takes you to unexpected places but love always brings you home,’” shared Alfonso of the experience. “Anyone who knows me knows how grateful I am to have all of you supporting me and welcoming me back when I’m back in Salem. These episodes with Pete will not disappoint.” In a post on her Instagram story timeline, Alfonso shared a photo of herself standing beside Reckell with their arms interlocked, captioning the post, saying, “Back in the Brady Pub. Hope you join us.” In addition to Alfonso and Reckell, “Days of our Lives” has also announced that Alison Sweeney will reprise her role as Sami Brady for an arc set to begin airing sometime in 2025. She told TV Insider in August, “I love playing Sami and I am always happy for the chance to come back. We always have to figure out scheduling and such, but if at all possible, I’m so glad to make it happen.” Although the show’s 60th anniversary season kicked off on Monday, August 26 on Peacock, “Days of our Lives” will officially turn 60 years old on November 8, 2025, having premiered in 1965. On Saturday, November 2, “Days of our Lives” will host its annual fan celebration (“Day of DAYS”) in honor of the show’s anniversary season at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event will be hosted by “Dishin’ Days” superfan Tony Moore. Note: The post Kristian Alfonso & Peter Reckell Back to ‘Days of our Lives’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Read More

  5. “Ambitions” creator and executive producer Jamey Giddens has been named head writer for the upcoming eighth season of “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” on BET, premiering Wednesday, October 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The news of Giddens’ promotion comes the same day the network unveiled new key art and a first look promo for Season 8 and comes on the heels of a successful Season 7, which is when Giddens joined the show as a staff writer. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Giddens said, “Earlier this year, I was honored to be asked to take over the writers’ room for @SistasOnBET as Head Writer. Here’s a sneak peek of what my amazing team and I came up with. #SistasOnBET.” According to Nielsen, for the second consecutive season “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” was the #1 series on television among Black viewers in the Adults 18-49 demographic and was the #1 series on cable among Black viewers aged 2+ and Black Adults 25-54. In a statement, the network notes, “‘Tyer Perry’s Sistas’ increased fandom is a testament to BET’s strategic collaboration and expansive creativity with Tyler Perry Studios and the ‘Sistas’ cast, which creates entertaining stories reflecting the Black experience.” “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” follows a group of single Black females navigating love in their 30s, self-discovery, careers, and friendships through the ups and downs of living in a modern world of social media and unrealistic relationship goals. The series stars KJ Smith, Mignon, Ebony Obsidian, Novi Brown, Crystal Renee’ Hayslett, Devale Ellis, Chido Nwokocha, Brian Jordan Jr., Angela “Angie” Beyincé, Branden Wellington and Kevin A. Walton. In addition to creating “Ambitions,” which aired for one season on OWN and starred Robin Givens in the lead role, Giddens has been a breakdown writer at “Days of our Lives” off and on since 2020. He also wrote for the spinoff series “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” and episodes of ALLBLK’s “The Rich and the Ruthless.” Before his television work, Giddens made a name for himself as the editorial director for Daytime Confidential, a popular TV news destination featuring breaking news on soaps, talk shows and game shows, daily recaps and spoilers. In 2009, he co-hosted “The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Pre-Show” alongside former Soap Opera Digest editor-in-chief Stephanie Sloane and the late Canadian journalist Nelson Branco. 6. Nearly four years since a primetime reboot of “All My Children” was first placed in development at ABC, it looks like Lifetime will instead become the new home for the latest happenings in Pine Valley. Soap Opera Network has confirmed that the cable network is in the early stages of development on a series of TV movies that will utilize characters from the long-running daytime drama series, which ran from January 5, 1970-September 23, 2011. Lifetime According to TV Line, which first reported the news, the network is in active development on at least two “All My Children” TV movies, one of which is said to be holiday-themed. Initially, the outlet reported that talks of a revival were in the early stages, with one source describing the conversations as ‘exploratory.'” The outlet later updated its report with confirmation from a network representative. A continuation of “All My Children” at Lifetime comes more than 10 years since Prospect Park Networks, which had licensed the rights to the show and its sister soap “One Life to Live” from ABC, failed to sustain an online continuation series. Available on Hulu and iTunes at the time, the online reboot of “All My Children” ran for just 43 episodes from April 29, 2013-September 2, 2013. Prospect Park Networks TV Line notes that Disney, which owns a 50% stake in Lifetime parent A&E Networks, has been looking for opportunities to “mine” the intellectual property of “All My Children” for years. This includes the defunct “Pine Valley” primetime reboot that was in development at ABC which would have followed a young journalist with a secret agenda who comes to Pine Valley to expose the dark and murderous history of the town only to become entangled in a feud between the Kane and Santos families. The series was expected to explore all the secrets that came with the Kane and Santos family names, and would have been executive produced by “All My Children” alums Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos (Hayley Vaughan Santos and Mateo Santos), hosts of the highly rated daytime talk show, “Live with Kelly and Mark,” which is nationally syndicated by Disney. In the time since “Pine Valley” was first announced as being in development, several former “All My Children” alums have indicated they would appear, if asked, including the legendary Susan Lucci (Erica Kane), Kim Delaney (Jenny Gardner) and Alicia Minshew (Kendall Hart), among others. Susan Lucci, Walt Willey (“All My Children”) Paul Skipper/JPI Studios Robert Nixon, son of the late Agnes Nixon, who created “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” had signed on as an executive producer alongside Ripa, Consuelos and Andrew Stearn. “Pine Valley” was based on a script written by Leo Richardson (“EastEnders,” “Katy Keene,” “Star”), who also would have served as an executive producer. In 2023, “All My Children” fans were thrilled to see actor Walt Willey reprise his role as Jackson Montgomery on “General Hospital” during a multi-episode arc that saw the character at certain points appearing in his office in Pine Valley alongside Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) and Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner). He later appeared in Port Charles as an attorney hired by Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) in a lawsuit she filed against Deception. Since the cancellation of “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” in 2011, the daytime landscape has sustained itself with the likes of “General Hospital,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” remaining in production on broadcast television. Meanwhile, “Days of our Lives” continues to flourish on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal. In January 2025, CBS will introduce “The Gates,” the first new daytime drama series since the debut of NBC’s “Passions” in July 1999. Created by veteran writer Michele Val Jean, who will also serve as showrunner/executive producer, “The Gates” tells the story of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. It is also the first daytime drama series expected to feature a predominantly Black cast since the 1991 conclusion of “Generations.” Note: The post Lifetime Developing Revival of ‘All My Children’ As TV Movie Franchise appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. 7. The carriage dispute between Disney and cable/satellite provider DirecTV (including U-verse) has greatly impacted several ABC programs since it began on September 1, 2024, with “General Hospital,” “GMA3: What You Need to Know” and “The View” seeing some of their lowest ratings during the week of September 2-6, 2024. Incidentally, the dispute comes exactly one year after Disney was involved in a similar disagreement with Spectrum parent Charter Communications. That dispute ran for several days (August 31 to September 11, 2023), and also put a dent in ABC’s ratings performance. As for the current dispute with DirecTV, things don’t seem to be going too well with both parties remaining at odds, according to a recent report by Deadline. The View Launching its 28th season on Tuesday, September 3, “The View” (2.101 million) got off to a rocky start among Total Viewers, down -250,000 viewers compared to its final week of originals for Season 27 (week of July 29-August 2, 2024). Meanwhile, the show’s year-to-year performance saw an even steeper decline, dropping -0.06 among Women 18-49 (0.15 rating vs. 0.21 rating) and down -0.11 among Women 25-54 (0.24 ratings vs. 0.35 rating). “The View” moved into a new studio and unveiled a new opening theme for Season 28. General Hospital Kicking off season 62 on Tuesday, September 3, “General Hospital”(1.813 million) hit a new season premiere low among Total Viewers. Compared to its performance one week earlier, the show was down -97,000 viewers. It was down -48,000 viewers compared to its performance during the same week last year. This marks the show’s 21st consecutive week where it has averaged less than two million viewers. The streak began during the week of April 15-19, 2024. Among Women 18-49, “General Hospital” topped its year ago performance with a 0.20 rating, up +0.02 from last year’s 0.18 rating. That said, the show was down -0.05 from its year ago 0.35 rating among Women 25-54, pulling in just a 0.30 rating this year. The Young and the Restless / The Bold and the Beautiful At CBS, just 162,000 viewers separated “The Young and the Restless” (2.858 million) from lead-out “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.696 million) among Total Viewers. The week also saw “The Young and the Restless” average less than three million viewers for the eighth consecutive week, while “The Bold and the Beautiful” topped its lead-in among both unrounded Women 18-49 and unrounded Women 25-54, marking the third time in four weeks the half-hour series has done so among unrounded Women 18-49. “The Bold and the Beautiful” was up +75,000 viewers week-to-week and up +95,000 viewers year-to-year. “The Bold and the Beautiful” pulled in a 0.24 rating among unrounded Women 18-49 compared with the 0.22 rating pulled by “The Young and the Restless.” Among unrounded Women 25-54, “The Bold and the Beautiful” pulled in a 0.40 rating versus the 0.39 rating for “The Young and the Restless.” Compared to how both shows performed one week earlier, “The Bold and the Beautiful” was down -0.02 among unrounded Women 18-49 and up +0.01 among unrounded Women 25-54, while “The Young and the Restless” was down -0.02 among unrounded Women 18-49 and down -0.08 among unrounded Women 25-54. Compared to both show’s year ago performances, “The Bold and the Beautiful” was virtually on par among both demographics, while “The Young and the Restless” saw notable declines. GMA3: What You Need to Know / NBC News Daily The competition among the daytime news programs got much tighter this week, with “NBC News Daily” (1.179 million) topping “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.148 million) across the board. Daytime Confidential reports that the ABC daytime drama series has hired “All My Children” alum Alexa Havins (ex-Babe Chandler) to portray the daughter of Luke and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis and Anthony Geary), and the younger sister of Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). Since Daytime Confidential‘s reporting, TV Line has confirmed Havins has been cast as Lulu. Last played by Emme Rylan, the return of Lulu marks a turning point for the character who was placed in a coma in 2020 when an explosion at the Floating Rib left several others injured and caused the deaths of Lulu’s love interest at the time, Dustin Phillips (Mark Lawson), and teenager Dev Cerci (Ashton Arbab). Although a return date has not been announced, recent episodes of the series have seen a body double taking the place of Lulu as her friends and family gather to visit her at General Hospital following news that she needs a liver transplant or else she might not survive. Reportedly, other actors in the running for the role of Lulu Spencer included Jennifer Landon (“Yellowstone,” “As The World Turns”) and Marci Miller (“Days of our Lives”). Since exiting daytime in 2007, Havins went on to make several guest appearances in such primetime shows as “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: NY,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Castle,” “Constantine,” “Barry” and even “Sweet Magnolias,” which features her real-life husband and former “All My Children” co-star, Justin Bruening (ex-Jamie Martin), in a starring role. In 2011, Havins briefly returned to “All My Children” to help close out the character’s story arc as the series was concluding on ABC. That same year, she starred as Esther Drummond in the BBC America original series “Torchwood.” Check out a clip from the Floating Rib explosion below. The 15th and final season of CBS’ “The Talk” began on Monday, September 9 with the show’s co-hosts breaking into song as they entered the Radford Studios stage in Hollywood, where the show tapes, to the tune of a reimagining of Bill Wither‘s 1977 chart-topping hit “Lovely Day.” In the opening number, Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell and Sheryl Underwood each take a verse from the iconic song as they prepare to have a lovely day preparing for a new season of their outgoing daytime talk show. Out for a jog, Gbajabiamila can be seen using his two feet to get to work, while Underwood finds herself wheeled diva style (all in fun) while laying on a couch, and Morales rides in epically on a horse. Featuring multiple dance numbers, including Kloots utilizing her “Dancing with the Stars” experience, the group gathers together for some fun, games and laughter. Plus, they’ve got cake! Two weeks to the day since Soap Opera Network exclusively broke the news that Kelly Monaco had been let go from her role as Sam McCall on ABC’s “General Hospital,” and that the character would be killed off this fall, fans have been rallying in support of the actress, who was “blindsided” by her abrupt firing, in the hopes of her getting her job back. Receiving more than 12,000 signatures thus far, a fan campaign to save Monaco’s job was launched immediately after the news broke, with the actress trending across X (formerly Twitter) every day since. Multiple media outlets picked up our story, including “Entertainment Tonight,” E! News, Deadline, PEOPLE, NY Post, Daily Mail, Variety, TV Line, Entertainment Weekly, Us Weekly, Los Angeles Times, Parade, The Independent, TV Insider and Toronto Sun, along with a host of other national and international news stations and print outlets. Since breaking the news, ABC has only confirmed Monaco will be exiting the series, noting the reason as “storyline dictated.” Meanwhile, on Monday, September 9, as “General Hospital” returned from a two-week production hiatus, a bright and blazing phoenix-colored billboard was driven around the Prospect Studios in Hollywood where the daytime drama tapes to make the message clear: “Rehire Kelly Monaco on ‘General Hospital’ and save Sam McCall!” The billboard included information on how anyone is welcome to join the cause across social media by connecting with the handle @IStandWithKelly and interacting with fans via the hashtag “IStandWithKelly.” Three memorable photos of Monaco were featured on the billboard, including her headshot from the show’s latest promotional campaign launched in the spring, along with clips featuring Monaco as she portrayed her character in scenes from the show.
