Moving shows around the schedule in the search for better numbers was part and parcel of programming.

In the Tank Jobs/Sabotage thread we've discussed how/why this was done when programmers lost faith in a show for any number of reasons.

In this thread let's look at timeslot changes that actually benefitted a show.

One example was Dallas. Originally on Sunday night it did well, but CBS saw how it suffered when up against strong movies on ABC/NBC. So it got moved to Saturday night for 78/79. Bit with a weak lead in (American Girls) and strong competition it floundered. So CBS tried Fri@9 following new show Dukes of Hazzard. The ratings picked up and the rest is history.

Six Million Dollar Man was struggling Friday nights in it's first season but once ABC moved it to Sun@8 it hit the Top 10.

Time Slot Hits

Dukes had a rocky season 82/83 when Schneider and Wopat were absent for most of the season and the ratings dropped. However the competition Benson/Odd Couple ABC and Powers of Matthew Star NBC didn't flourish so CBS was biding their time until the original stars returned.
And Dallas/Falcon Crest were still strong.
Once Schneider/Wopat returned, ratings improved and the show was regularly Top 20.
So I guess CBS was reluctant to shift the show when it was stabilizing. But later, it probably should have been moved and replaced with something of similar appeal.
Dukes was one of those few shows that never switched time slots.

ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years

When WGPR now WWJ-TV Detroit started up as the first Black-owned television station there were plans for a Black soap opera called "A Time To Live". This was in an old Department of Education report.
WWJ-TV struggled to keep even news on the air during it's time so this idea was too ambitious to get off the ground. The only soap it ever aired was "Santa Barbara" amongst an assorted lineup of network shows. Ironically it is now a CBS affiliate.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread

Just read that Charita Bauer appeared on Broadway in 'The Women' in 1936 that was filmed with Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer in 1939. Charita must have played the daughter of the main character.
Such a pity that performers like Charita with such long and diverse careers were never properly interviewed. She would have had some stories to tell.

Once Brian Frons in 83 arrived at NBC this, along with Scruples and some others were dropped. Santa Barbara got the go ahead instead.

LOL...besides the end, when he just smirks when Van lays down her terms, I think my favorite part is him stalking out of HB's, muttering "I've got a DATE." sigh* the angst of it all.
The girl in the pink is Samantha Marler (Philip's full biological sister.) She came to town in early '89, and stayed with Ross. (Her relationship with Dylan drove him nuts.) Her dad is Justin Marler, Ross' older brother, just recently returned to town and being played by Christopher Pennock. His protege, the dark haired younger man, is Daniel St. John. In case it wasn't clear, the children with Beth and Phillip at the end were Michelle Bauer and Ben Reade (before they were slightly aged and recast.)

any idea why they stopped providing that info? it’s the one metric that really gives a sense of how shows are faring — particularly beyond the gates — what is their total viewership compared to a year ago?
