A 90-year old underground steam pipe burst, created a huge crater in the street and steam and debris gushed out of there like a geyser for some time. Reports so far are 1 fatality (they're saying a heart attack apparently brought on more by shock than anything else) and 16 injuries. Here in NYC, ABC News has been covering it since it happened. It really is amazing that there weren't more injuries. Although, who knows what may happen long term if asbestos or other toxins were released into the air. Con Edison could not shut down the valve all at once for fear the steam pressure would back up and burst forth somewhere else in the city.
