Perhaps, if I hadn't been worn down by years of awful writing, @BetterForgotten, I would agree with you.  However, by the time Laiman and Passanante came along, I was desperate for anything on AW to hold my interest -- and you know I'd have to BE desperate, too, to even give two shits about something screwy as Lumina!

Oh, @Khan, Lumina was so bad! David Halliday/Jordan Stark with the facial disfiguration, UGH, can we say Phantom of the Opera?!!

And, David/Jordan was after both Rachel & Amanda. Yuck!

And, Cameron, of The Secret Garden with Amanda & Ally, had that soft "barely there" hair & spoke just as softly. Where The Secret Garden was really just a maze of shrubbery.

However, in a way, that neglect worked in AW's favor.  When AW was cancelled, it was in much better shape, overall, than it had been in quite some time.

I thought the end 90s were better than you did. Carl & Rachel's love story & time walking through the Poet's Corner were wonderful, if you ask me. Of course, Matt & Amanda were always against that. In real life, my brother was against it too. Our family grew up with both AW & DOOL.

I don't understand why everyone felt compelled to stay there and listen to her, though.  She wasn't detaining anyone.  Just walk out the [!@#$%^&*] door, people.

It's interesting that with all the characters DAYS has brought back from the dead over the years, Renee DiMera is one who has STAYED dead.

We have to realize, though, that the writing was on the wall. I do respect her for a last ditch effort to try something different to save the show. It was a disaster, but at least they tried.

Yes, the writing was on the wall for both ATWT & GL. Then, of course, across the pathway, the writing was on the wall for AMC & OLTL, too. We have lived through a truly terrible time.

He used a pseudonym for the three novels he successfully published. With fans online, in RATSm, he used another pseudonym. He was a best firend to Anna Stuart (aka Donna Love). He & I were very close.

VanessaReardon, The next time you talk to Marcia McCabe, ask her about knowing this P&G writer, Tom Petitjean. I believe he was a friend of hers & of Chris's.

Was Jenson B a drunk back during her AW days?

If she was, no one knew about it. But, you have to remember that when she had the DUI & terrible accident, it was years after she'd left AW. End of AW, she was at ATWT for 2 days. Then she went directly to GH. Didn't she do Y&R after that? And, then, she had the accident. I think that tracks.

  7. 11 minutes ago, VanessaReardon said:

Donna - can you PLEASE stick to facts! Goutman & McCabe divorced in 2016 - LONG after ATWT went off the air. Stop spreading misinformation. God you’re annoying!!

If Goutman & McCabe divorced in 2016, I'm fine with that. I still would imagine from everything we've all heard about Chris Goutman from 2004 on that he was living a miserable life. If that's an issue of fact to you, okay. It's not to me.

  8. While I'm talking about Ellen, which I rarely do unless I'm talking to AW fans or people on the GL team, I'll sort of break my habit & post an interesting anecdote: "My agent called me on a Friday at about 6 pm and said 'Now, what soap did you audition for first?' I said, 'RYAN'S HOPE.' And he said, 'Then what?' I said 'SANTA BARBARA.' 'And then what?' 'DAYS OF OUR LIVES.' 'Well, you were just cast on ANOTHER WORLD and you start on Tuesday.' Imagine how fast she had to begin. (She played Marley Love Hudson and Vicky Love Hudson 1984-1986; Marley Love Hudson 1998-present. ALL MY CHILDREN 2 roles Cindy & Karen; BOLD & BEAUTIFUL Sarah, Sheila's friend; AS THE WORLD TURNS Director; GUIDING LIGHT Executive Producer. Marley & Cindy won Emmys.) Wheeler left the role in 1986 and returned in 1988. ... "I felt that total connection to Jensen, the second I was back. I didn't even know her, so that's really weird. We had been parts of the same person. We had helped create the same people. A part of what I did influences how Vicky is today and part of what she did influences how my Marley is today, so it's an odd thing to say, but it gave us a common ground immediately." (Oddly, at the end of ANOTHER WORLD, Ellen played a taller Marley than Jensen played a shorter Vicky. - twins that were different heights.) Ellen Wheeler was once married to Tom Eplin. She has nothing but glowing things to say about him as an acting partner to different actresses - herself, Anne Heche, Jensen Buchanan and Molly Conlon.

  9. You are welcome to JFP if you choose her. I definitely do not choose her. And, I am a huge fan of Ellen Wheeler's. That's not a new thing for me to be saying here. I've said it before. She was a complicated lady but she was on the side of brilliance. And, she was strong. And, she made hard decisions. There's no way that Peapack was worse than killing Mo! Heck, John Conboy was probably one of GL's show killers! And, he wasn't even alone: he had Weston with him. She came up with solutions when they were needed. And, after Conboy spent his own budget & hers, too, leaving her with a deficit, she came up with money, with budgets. And, then, there was the writing: Otalia and Jammy were two of GL's best storylines. The Wednesday shows were so special. Going out into the community & building houses was an amazing that that they did. While I'm at it, did you all know that Beth Chamberlin knew how to use every power tool?!!! The only thing wrong with GL at the end was that they had to scramble so much for budget - which they successfully did - and that they needed to have been free of ConWest period - and that they didn't have enough time. If they had only had the amount of time that ATWT did ... If Jess hadn't had to be away for maternity leave ... GL just had a crunch.

I didn't feel AW ended on any type of creative high - Leah Laiman and Jean Passanante's writing was boring as sh!t. But AW was generally a very neglected show, by both NBC and P&G.

Charlotte Savitz was a very bad EP & she competed to see how many people she could fire. JFP was a very bad EP & she fired 2 more people than Savitz had & brutally murdered Frankie Frame by a serial killer. Michael Malone was a terrible HW & never understood the show or the characters & tried to turn it into a show bible called 13 Bourbon Street. Margaret Depriest was a terrible HW who wrote two serial killers while she was HWing. Leah Laiman and Jean Passanante were terrible HWs & Chris didn't even want them & had them pushed on him. P&G wanted the best for AW. NBC wanted to either own AW itself or push it out the back door.

Chris Goutman had a good run at AW for maybe a year and a half or less - taking the show off the air with dignity.

"We all felt that we had truly turned the show around." - Donna Bridges, all the fan activists thought that Chris Goutman had turned the show around! "In daytime it takes a long time to lose loyal fans and it also takes a while to get them back. We all felt that in the last six months in particular that the show had improved dramatically."

It really made no sense that NBC's Susan D. Lee gave Sunset Beach a 6 month extension when AW had better ratings. And, MADD had put AW on a deadline & then came back in the country just to cancel it before that deadline was up! Chris, like everyone at AW, openly wept at the end of the show.

Quoting Vee: He then had a few good but controversial years at ATWT. That was a long, long time ago. The minute he pushed Sheffer out ATWT became unwatchable and stayed that way til it ended its run, a long slow death he regularly seemed to treat with utter contempt in public behavior. He was allegedly responsible for inadvertently truncating Julianne Moore's appearance as well. Goutman is a talented actor and director with a long, long history in daytime. He also should've been dumped from ATWT long before the end.

Me: In 2005 Chris gave a Q&A to Jen Lenhart, ATWT Editor for "Soap Opera Digest", in which he said that he knew what his show needed & he didn't want any fan mail or calls to the studio. Besides that & burning Martha, he was very arrogant at the end. I asked someone who worked for him at both AW & ATWT what in the heck happened & he said that in 2004 Chris went over to the darkside. That's just the way he said it. And, sometime in there, he & Marcia McCabe got a divorce, so you know the man lived with tension all the time.

Lau was at Another World from 1986 to 1990. He wasn't on the show when Farren Phelps was there. She was executive producer from 1995 to 1996. Gary Tomlin hired Lau on OLTL. There are closing credits featuring Kale Browne online from March 2001 that show Tomlin as executive producer.

Okay. Thanks for spelling that out. I remember when Larry came back to work, at AW, and for soaps, in general. He had been through some sort of rehab. He looked great, healthy & had lost weight. I was hostessing him & his delightful girlfriend in our courtesy room at a fan event & he was just really great. He was in a black tshirt & tight black jeans. He & Stephen Schnetzer looked alike! LOL

I agree with the comments about what Ron has done re Julie.  I have enjoyed the Doug and Julie scenes in which they've been alone, but I give credit to Susan and Bill for that.  Now Ron seems to be working on dragging down Kayla, making her an incompetent and unethical doctor.  And none of this is making me like Gabi either.  Just makes me resent her.

Yes, it's true that I have really felt settled into it when they've put Doug & Julie alone. And, there's no good reason for him to be writing Kayla this way! Kay is a jewel.

But I hate that viewers who don't know the real Julie – who didn't see her progress from troubled schemer to romantic heroine to high-powered businesswoman – are labeling her racist because of the way Ron is writing her.

Yes, I was just reminiscing about what a spoiled little girl she was. But, Julie has had character growth in front of our very eyes like no other.

Okay, I know that a canonical definition of camp is out there somewhere from Susan Sontag, but I don't have it to hand right now.

    Here's the dictionary.com definition:

something that provides sophisticated, knowing amusement, as by virtue of its being artlessly mannered or stylized, self-consciously artificial and extravagant, or teasingly ingenuous and sentimental.

a person who adopts a teasing, theatrical manner, especially for the amusement of others.

    verb (used without object)

Also camp it up. to speak or behave in a coquettishly playful or extravagantly theatrical manner.

    adjective

campy: camp Hollywood musicals of the 1940s.

See?! Nope, this is not camp. Not sophisticated. Not with knowing amusement. Not artlessly mannered. Not stylized. Not artificial. Not extravagant. Etc.

Why do you consider Laurence Lau to be a FOJ? I don't see the connection.

I thought at the time that Larry Lau was considered to be an FOJ & considered himself to be one. I could be wrong. I know I remember it being said, but that in itself could be wrong. We had Lau at AW & then he was at OLTL.

Glad to hear that Pam had a gap.

Ya know, something that we need is a canonical list of FOJs!

Actors & JFP colleagues just don't have the same view of her as we do.

I literally just opened this thread to post the exact same sentiments.

This is not Julie. This is a unlikable, alternative-reality pod version of the character, being butchered by a hack writer who lacks the talent (and probably even the interest) to write consistent, nuanced, adult drama.

The show has butchered and warped many of its veteran players over the years, including Maggie, Marlena, and now Julie, and it only turns off long-time viewers like me, who remember how good the writing once was.

AMEN. I've hurt for it with Maggie and Marlena both in the past. But, I am more in pain for it to be Julie.

    6 hours ago, Wendy said:

But Ron cannot write nuance. Subtlety? Forget it. He has his white hats and black hats and the end.

It may not be right or fair as far as my issue with Gabi/Julie goes, but it's how I feel.

And, I find myself really worrying with great concern if Ron is going to cause DOOL to go under?!!! Can the ratings sustain this?!!! Will we lose one of the last four to what is such a mess where the writing is concerned?!!! I really care about that. I'm not watching Y&R or B&B or GH. I'm only watching DOOL. And, I find myself feeling a little desperate. Heck, one day last week I felt myself in a cliffhanger moment where it seemed like Julie had died! I didn't know for sure that she had not until Monday's show. And, it is the writing. The Directing is solid, with Scott McKinsey in there pitching with others. And, that's a good cast for the most part. Oh, I have whined about Stacy Haiduk and about Robin Strasser but they are only two. The bulk of the cast fits fine into the town called Salem.

It's just a shame this has to involve such a rich, complex character. He should never be allowed to write for anyone who has ever provided any worth to this genre. Fortunately for him, that leaves a lot of characters.

Okay, now, there's a problem with definition. This is not camp.

Did Pamela K. Long go to OLTL directly from GL? And, at OLTL, she wrote the Kramer women, that matriarchy, strong & interesting & female instead of male, right? And, then, she wrote the Rappaports, too, right? How many FOJs did JFP turn into Rappaports? Kale Browne & Larry Lau? It's just a wonder that she could find enough FOJs to go around at times!
