Well, actually Chelsea & Naomi were critical of Dani in fairly "typical" mother/daughter ways & it had to do with Dani being overbearing & critical of them, which is a totally different side of Dani than the Wild Woman of Fairmont Crest!

Yabbut, that is also a smart thing to do & these people have made a great many smart decisions as far as I can see.

I tend to be leery of Guza, although I do credit the fact that he gave the revisitation of Luke raping Laura to MVJ to take & run with it. And, of course, he took Carly from the page (Labine) to actual existence. Our descriptions are so different!!! I just dropped a whole month of episodes. I watched Feb. 6 because of SSH. This is new to me. Don't forget Shari Anderson, who wrote BITD & again during the strike.

Okay, here's what's different. The first opinion is about the show. The second opinion is about the first opinion & those who espouse it. Obviously when people in good faith are discussing any reasoned, rational opinion about the show being discussed is fair game. No foul. But, when opinions turn to being about other people in the discussion, that is very different. In this example, using myself, I am being criticized for exaggerating, when in fact, IMO, I was not. I literally think this was one of the strongest launches of a new soap I have ever seen, in my lifetime & I offered several examples of other soaps where I watched the first episode/s. Santa Barbara had a fairly amazing start. Port Charles, if you recall, was so different it was actually bizarre, a primetime launch where among other things one of the new batch of interns used a 3/4 inch drill to perform emergency ad hoc brain surgery on Audrey. The City was basically just the next day after the Loving murders. Sunset Beach Meg moving from Kansas to this beach town where Ben was. Generations I saw but do not remember a thing, so def not memorable. I didn't see it but people say good things about the B&B first show. Passions, also did not see. Now, do any of these sound to you like I was exaggerating in the comparison I made?

Here we have the crux of our disagreement. To me false hope, unrealistic "possibilities" is a thing that is very bad for soap fandom.

I did not come to it on my own but now that you say it, I do see it. I think I have met my new soap obsession: Dani, written by MVJ & played by KaMo. I wonder if Dani is short for Danielle. And, I wonder if she might end up being a one name persona. Personally I don't see a need to seriously drag either Martin or Chelsea. Do they have greater distances to grow than others, sure. But, it's Week 1, there's time. These people seem to be smart so maybe there's an acting coach. If so, Martin, Chelsea, Ashley, Ashley's bf, first cadre formed!

I respect you & your opinion. We simply disagree. I have never posted "doom & gloom" for the genre. I have been a stalwart defender of the "final four" even when I have found it necessary to reflect upon & discuss the low bar they seemed to inhabit. And, now, with this very strong launch of BTG & experiencing the blitz of good solid promotion, things have changed, maybe dramatically. And, Frons hated soaps from as early as 1983. Moonves was not very interested, not very informed about them & frankly dismissive. With my immense interest in all soap history including writing about any soap I can find info on, I submit your comparison of them to me, is simply offbase. One would be hard-pressed to support it. Scott McKinsey did not dub me a true "daytime champion" without putting serious thought into it.

Oh, oh, I know this answer! There are IRL men who do not come to an understanding of their true sexuality until late in life. Meanwhile they marry women & have families. This was a grossly under-represented sub-group of an also under-represented group. These guys loved this story. The problem is they used the wrong couple!

I want to challenge all of us to say what were the 5 most important things that happened this first week. 1. Dani's slap of Hayley in front of everyone at the very end of S1E1. 2. Natural approach to sex & physicality including talk, after. 3. The Fairmont Crest community at the wedding even if they were dressed in black with sour expressions on their faces & refusing to stand for the bride processional. 4. The non-lethal discharge of a handgun at the wedding. 5. Naomi's confrontation with Bill. "My father is dead."

In zoom our group immediately all wondered out loud if either Eva was lying or if Leslie lied to her. It was like red flags went up.

I thought today was amazing just because it had so much contentiousness in it! Kristina, Ric, Sonny, Alexis, Ava Sasha, thank god, did the right thing. Maxie was def listening, too.

I would watch this show.

Dani really is a force of nature. She gives off a glow. He had the privilege of basking in that for apx 30 years, at least part of every day. She was his, all his. We know he doesn't want her any more but I bet he misses that glow.
