Having grown up in the NYC Metro/Tri-state area, I can attest to the aspect of NY having some fairly sophisticated public access and public television programming, even in the 80s. I feel quite fortunate to being raised around that time where there was a bit more room for experimentation. The programming now has become so tame and risk-averse.

I agree with you so much on so many things, we must be around the same age! :) What the hell happened to creativity and risk-taking? It's like we've gone back to 1950s-style censorship (just censoring different things).

Such a great interview. This Alan guy though starts interjecting at the worst times though. I wanted to hear more about how they felt as black actresses on daytime, they all seemed up for talking in-depth about it.

He's abysmal and ruins most interviews but apparently there's nobody in his life caring enough to stage an intervention.

  3. Marie definitely needs to come back but I'm a bit biased as she's my favorite Days character. She would make a great matriarch for the Hortons. I think it's mystifying that they never brought Bill back before killing him off. He would have been a great patriarch and would have been interesting with Maggie. They could have been the new Tom and Alice. Mike is now the most glaring omission. Not sure what current writers have had against him. They should bring back him and Jeremy. You know, actual Hortons with the hope of passing on the name. If they want younger characters, Jeremy would still be considered young. They could easily bring him back on and this time make him less douchey. The writers just don't seem interested in perpetuating the Hortons.

I saw the livestream interview with Paul Leyden and was astonished about his revelation that the show actually coughed up the cash to fly out half a dozen Australian guys business class to NYC ca. 2000-01 just to test for the Simon Frasier role?? You could already see cuts to the show production. I wonder what went into that decision to fly all those Aussies from one side of the world to the other just for a few days? Was this the best use of the show's decreasing budget?

I thought that was strange too. Why go through all that expense? If they wanted an Australian character, why not just hire a New York actor who can do an Australian accent? Isn't that what actors do? Accents and such?

I actually sent her a message to be sure. Here's what the Suzanne on FB said:

"I’m afraid I did not play Betsy, but how nice of you to write!  As it turns out, my cousin did direct ATWT, Heather Hill, so I do have some connection.  Wishing you well, as well, warm regards, Suzanne"

    I guess mystery solved!

Thank you for going the extra mile and how nice of her to write back! That mystery solved but I'm afraid the mystery of whatever happened to the Suzanne Davidson who played Betsy may forever remain a mystery.

  6. At the risk of appearing to be a stalker, a sufferer of OCD or having way too much time on my hands, I went to the "adult" Suzanne Davidson's LinkedIn page and it says she was an "associate" from 1976-1978 and a "co-chief operating officer" from 1978-1983. These were the years the "child" Suzanne Davidson was a pre-teen and teen on ATWT so I don't think it's the same Suzanne Davidson. Unless she was very precocious.

P&G claimed that they dropped the THE in order to "modernize" the soaps (TGL and TEON) and attract a younger audience.

(That excuse...er, explanation has always seemed delirious and stupid to me.)

Well, it makes sense to some degree. Young people are known to have an aversion to articles. :)

Don't let the trolls get you down, vetsoapfan!  Whoever is attacking you for preferring the best years of a genre or show is probably the type of person who considers Ellen Wheeler a visionary. Not worth getting upset about.

It sure looks like her, but who knows?

Do you think so?I was thinking it was't her because it didn't look anything like her. Of course, I'm sure she's changed a lot since way back then but I didn't think the facial features look similar at all. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong photo.

I agree. I’ve never really liked any of his characters but he was so personable during this interview.

I just watched the interview and was coming to write this very thing. I never liked VI because I never liked the way he came across on screen. I guess it was his characters. He seems very likable in real life.

  10. It's not like they went out with a bang. They went out with a whimper. It's like they're celebrating the death of the show. Why would they want to celebrate and remember when the show was at its worst? I don't get it. It's not like a prime time show that decided to end their own run and go out in style.

Chandler Massey what a hunk. I should move to Georgia.😊

I'm Ray Charles singing and playing the piano and Chandler on the piano shirtless.

And I was crucified for 💕 Chandler.

Colleen was thrilled to learn he was in Florida since she lives there too and asked Andrew where and Alan cut him off.

You have good ears because Alan was cutting him off as he said where.

Yeah, I could have filled in the blanks out of sheer frustration at Alan's interviewing skills. I tend to do that a lot with his interviews.

LOL much better. Thank you! ;)

I see Freddie has indeed moved my way. LOL. Not sure why people love to come to Florida. We are a hot mess. I'd rather have Chandler ;) (slightly kidding; I like Freddie) but Georgia isn't far

Do we know what part of Florida Andy Kavovit is in? lol. What is it about Florida?

It's interesting. The only place in Florida I would want to live in is Miami Beach (which I did for several years) but I know A LOT of people would rather live anywhere in Florida EXCEPT FOR Miami Beach. To each their own.

I THINK, and I could be completely wrong about this, that Andy Kavovit said he lived in the Tampa area. He said during his interview but it wasn't clear because someone was talking over him (probably Alan). I think that's what I heard but, like I said, I could be completely wrong.

As of Feb 44 Mary Rutledge Holden was still on The Guiding Light according to newspaper promos.

Interesting. I wonder what she did after she married Ned in 1941. There's no storyline mentioned for her after that. I guess she just hung out.

It would be nice to be able to see more of the episodes that aired during the show's anniversary. I know we've all seen April 1986, for instance, but what happened on the anniversary episode that aired April 1987?

From perusing @Brolden's episode archive thread, I can see that there were many preemptions due to the Iran-Contra hearings but those began in May, not April, which makes me curious.

Another random question: was ATWT the only soap that has an episode featuring a family sitting down to eat Easter dinner in the 1980s? Or was this common among the soaps during that era?

I can't speak for the ABC soaps because I never watched them but it was very rare for any soap that I watched at any time. Easter was just rarely mentioned in soaps except maybe The Guiding Light when they would have a sermon or sermonette on Good Friday. Part of that had to do with Easter not being a major holiday like Thanksgiving and Christmas and part of it had to do with Easter obviously falling on Sundays when the show wasn't on. I think for those two reasons, it was easy to just skip over Easter. I remember originally watching them celebrate Easter on ATWT during the 80s and thinking it was strange. Great but strange.

The Variety review said that a divinity student delivered the lamp in the first episode of the Selby Flats episode so not Ned Holden?

    Some summaries from the 40's

    June 10 1940

In this episode, Myrna returns to San Francisco in a depression and tries to bury her grief by returning to her broadcasting career. Martin Kane thinks she's sad because her ex-husband, Ned Holden, is marrying Mary Rutledge. However, Myrna says that isn't the case. She confesses that she met a man on the East Coast and fell in love with him. Myrna refuses to give details, but says that the relationship ended. Martin says that she may have misinterpreted the entire affair and that he'll wait for her.

NB Myrna is Torchy Reynolds actual first name.

    June 12 1940

In this episode, Rose Kransky remains after hours with her boss, Jack Felzer, to compensate for the time she took to attend Ned and Mary's wedding. Jack asks about the nuptials, which leads to a discussion of how Rose, Ned, and Mary all grew up in Five Points. Rose realizes why Jack knows so much about her background: He had read about her in the newspapers during her recent court appearance. Jack tells her that he admired her conduct under such trying circumstances. She admits that she wanted to escape her former life. Implying that he's romantically interested in her, Jack counsels Rose to simply accept her destiny.

    May 7 1945

In this episode, attorney Peter Manno talks to Angela Mason about the custody case he is working on. He explains that much of the judge's decision in the case will depend on the testimony of a woman named Nana. The program is interrupted by a news update, which informs the public on the progress of the official end of the war in Europe. The program resumes as Manno says the nation should establish federal regulations that will protect the rights of people who adopt children.

    August 10 1945

In this episode, lawyer Peter Manno has decided to come clean about a mistake he made seven years ago, despite the fact that only his wife Angie knows of the misdeed. Peter goes to Mr. Burrows, confessing what happened after he was assigned to the 1935 jewel robbery case. Mr. Burrows never knew that Peter's brother, Tony, was involved, nor the fact that Peter gave Tony a second chance after the heist. Peter begs that Tony be left alone, as Tony has "gone straight" by becoming an accountant, getting married and having two children. Mr. Burrows agrees, but says that Peter will be judged by the Bar Association's grievance committee the next day -- and may end up disbarred and disgraced

    August 14 1945

The bar has censured Peter for his wrongdoing. Peter decides not to run for office and hands in his resignation as assistant state attorney.

Yeah, I think that Variety review you posted is the only place that says it was a divinity student. Everything else I've read (2, maybe 3, other sources) said it was Ned. Who knows? As I've lamented before, there's a lot of misinformation in those history synopses. I would probably go more with something that was written at the same time that the story was actually being told which would be the Variety article I suppose.

Where did you get those episode summaries? I knew the June 12, 1940 episode existed but I've been unable to find it. I never knew, however, that the May 7, 1945 episode or the August 14, 1945 episodes even existed. Is that from a museum website or something? Thanks so much for posting that! It gives me hope that there's a lot more out there than I'm aware of!
