Every time I see a 1990s-era Guiding Light clip, I’m struck by what a one-note actor Mark Derwin is, with his clenched-mouth, constipated portrayal of Mallet.

I didn't think much of Mark Derwin acting when he was on Y&R, so I was surprised that he became so popular on GL, winning SOD 1993 Hottest Male Star over Antonio Sabato Jr. and getting a Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination that same year. He also became a Friend of Jill, as I'm pretty sure she brought him over to One Life to Live.

  2. January 16, 1978 One Life to Live and General Hospital expand to 1 hr each.

The new ET schedules starting w/ the soaps until the end of the day were

CBS: 11:30 am Love of Life, noon Y&R, 12:30 pm Search for Tomorrow, 1 pm Local programming, 1:30 pm As the World Turns, 2:30 pm Guiding Light, 3:30 pm All in the Family reruns, 4 pm Match Game

ABC: 12:30 pm Ryan's Hope, 1 pm All My Children, 2 pm One Life to Live, 3 pm General Hospital, 4 pm The Edge of Night

NBC: 1 pm For Richer, For Poorer; 1:30 pm Days, 2:30 pm The Doctors, 3 pm Another World, 4 pm Local programming

The soap time slot rivalries were now

Search for Tomorrow vs. Ryan's Hope

All My Children vs. For Richer, For Poorer

As the World Turns vs. All My Children/One Life to Live vs. Days

Guiding Light vs. One Life to Live/General Hospital vs. The Doctors/Another World

Eden's rape, although violent and graphic, turned out to be a very distasteful and insensitive storyline.

@Khan I don't know if you saw the Entertainment Tonight Y&R 50th anniversary special, but there was a segment on social issue storylines where Lauralee Bell talked about Cricket's date rape and how Bill Bell wanted to tell that story properly. I got the impression that Lauralee Bell was taking a swipe at how other soaps told rape storylines and I think one of the rape storylines she was swiping was Santa Barbara Eden.

Even when Bill Bell still was head writer, B&B was a show I never could tolerate for more than a couple of months at a time.  I loved watching Susan Flannery, of course, and Darlene Conley always was a hoot, lol.  But the rest of that cast, I could take-or-leave.

    Thanks for the reply.

It's the same for me re Days and the ABC big three. I tried to watch them but I wasn't drawn to them at all.

And despite what Marland would later think of him, I think Allen Potter was an excellent EP who really brought GL into the modern age. He never gets any credit for his contributions either.

I think its safe to say that GL's best EPs in its final 30 years were Allen Potter and Robert Calhoun.

I think it was more that ATWT was the #1 show for many many years so that when it faltered it threw P & G for a loop.

Plus CBS and P&G were really shaken by ABC huge rise and dominance, thus CBS rearranging the soap block and changes to the shows themselves.

Proctor & Gamble insisted that ATWT be the # 1 soap on CBS and GL should be at best # 2. Since GL was # 1 in the ratings, the executives were pissed off a bit.

This makes no sense to me. One would think P&G would be happy that one of their shows was CBS's highest-rated soap.

Do you have Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing syndicated ratings for this time? It would be interesting to see how they fared in comparison to early Oprah.

eternal frat boy, Joshua Morrow, refusing to be reunited with the only on-screen romantic partner his dull ass has ever made sense with.

Joshua Morrow is a month away from 50 and his whole overgrown frat boy persona is just so ridiculous at this point. It boggles my mind that his 30th anniversary is in June.

The fact is that the chemistry is off the charts for Sharon Case and Joshua Morrow only when they are together. They are endgame, and everybody knows it. I wish they'd get to that endgame now.

Nick and Sharon are end game but the writers want to keep them forever young and beautiful star-crossed lovers even though they are well into middle age and have grown children.
