@JAS0N47  and anyone else reading who collects print issues of soap magazines:
You might be interested in the above posts (and previous page) of this thread,
discussing the new issue of TV Guide print magazine with its special feature on soaps written by Michael Maloney.  It's a two-page feature.
It's not a "soap magazine" but still interesting.
Cover date "Nov.  27 – Dec. 17, 2023  Triple Issue"
Print issue cover is "NCIS: Sydney"

Thanks for thinking of me Jane!

TV Guide was actually the first magazine I started collecting, before I had ever watched Days, in the 1980's. That is my longest-running collection, although a little incomplete, with just 140 issues missing from 1953-Present, so a 70-year collection!

So, that, plus my complete sets of Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly, are the three magazines in my collection.

Coming back to this, I found these two possible ATWT preemptions that I couldn't eliminate because there were no times listed. Nothing from 1992 or 1993 seems to fit.

Can you double check if GL was preempted on these days?

1/23/91 Unrated War in the Gulf 29 (unknown timings)
8/20/91 Unrated CBS Special Report: Soviet Coup 6 (unknown timings)

I didn't miss anything, but it looks like the 1/22/91 GL "breakout" episode would most likely have been re-aired the following day. On 1/22/91, GL only aired for 22 minutes (3-314 & 321-329PM). My guess is they re-aired it the next day (and even then there were a lot of preemptions). On 1/23/91, it only aired from 339-4PM (21 minutes), so actually the second half of the 1/22/91 episode that didn't air anywhere.

So I would say 1/22/91 is the likely full preemption.

    7/23/90-7/27/90:
GH - You have 6.3, SOW has 6.2
GL - you have 5.3, SOW has 5.2

    8/6/90-8/10/90:
    Y&R - You have 8.1/28, SOW has 7.3/25 !!!
DOOL - You have 5.5/18, SOW has 5.1/17
both are noted by SOW as having preemptions

    8/20/90-8/24/90:
GL - You have an 18 share, SOW has 19
AW - You have 4.1/14, SOW has 3.4/12

Thanks. We had a good run of "thumbs up" all correct. Was hoping that would continue. I will keep a note of these and check on them at some point to see if I mistyped something.

@JAS0N47 Thanks for the demos. I know you’re just posting the books but some numbers don’t make sense and I’m curious how you interpret them. Again, you just post the Nielsen numbers. In May, 1982, I do not believe for a second that Texas was beating GH in the women demos. GH had 3X the audience of Texas. These numbers need some explanation.

(I think you mean Feb. 1982, but other than that)...I never really looked much at these pages, but I do see what you are seeing, so it is confusing. I'm not an expert in Nielsen ratings, especially the demos, but I can certainly see why you are confused. I am confused by that comparison too.

It says Total Persons watching Texas that week was 1487 and GH 1286, yet GH had a 10 rating and Texas had a 3 rating.

So, as for the demos, I am just as confused as you by that!

  5. DIFFERENCES IN SOAP OPERA WEEKLY CHARTS VS. NIELSEN BOOKS (SO FAR)...

10/23/89-10/27/89: SOW has BB share at 22....Nielsen book has 20 share,
11/27/89-12/1/89: All shares in SOW are higher than in Nielsen book.
6/4/90-6/8/90: SOW has ATWT at 5.5/20 and AW at 3.8/14 (The removal of Monday breakouts for both made ATWT 5.6/21 and AW 3.9/15).
6/18/90-6/22/90: SOW has GH at 6.8 (a typo). GH is 6.3.

I'll be on the lookout. I'm sure it'll get figured out.

I might have caught the preemption for ATWT and missed it when checking on GL, so if you see something for ATWT that looks like it also preempted GL for that time frame, let me know. I remember that happening once I think with AMC, but I caught that omission and added the preemption to the AMC list.

Is my math off or could there be a missing Guiding Light preemption or double numbered episode somewhere?

    According to random script covers:
Episode #10900 aired on 5/3/90 and
    Episode #11711 aired on 8/10/93.

I know that sometimes the script date turns out to be wrong, if there was an unaccounted for preemption before the airdate, but I don't see anything like that during those periods (just sports and holidays). There's also confirmation here that #11,421 aired on 6/12/92 https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2014/03/26/gl-40th-anniversary-special-1992/ (I am assuming the Primetime special doesn't get an episode number, since it was behind the scenes, not an episode - but who knows!)

When I try to chart out the numbers, I think we need one more preemption to make the dates work? I don't think CBS was doing holiday classic episodes yet as of 1993.

Hmm, the later ones from 1992 and 1993 I did from a different list, where I just checked the calendar dates, so I could have possibly missed a random date somewhere. When I start doing the remainder of the 1992 and 1993 books, that should be caught if I missed something.

    Week of 6/4/90
ATWT - You have 5.6/21, SOW has 5.5/20
AW - You have 3.9/15, SOW has 3.8/14

    Week of 6/18/90
GH - You have 6.3, SOW has 6.8

    Week of 6/4/90
ATWT - You have 5.6/21, SOW has 5.5/20  (Monday breakout got a 5.2/19)
AW - You have 3.9/15, SOW has 3.8/14 (Monday breakout got a 3.5/13)

Looks like the removal of the breakouts made ATWT and AW's final numbers higher.

    Week of 6/18/90
GH - You have 6.3, SOW has 6.8

I thought this would be a typo by me, but it's a typo by SOW. GH got a 6.3 that week.

Thanks I am doing some research, trying to find out how bad GH was, when they brought in Marland & Monty in 1978. My bad luck there's no '77. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

There will be in the future, so eventually you will have 1977.

Is there any information available on Tribes in those Nielsen books?

I just looked at the debut week (3/5/90) and finale week (7/9/90) books for Tribes, and nothing is in Nielsen. Wiki says Tribes only aired on a few FOX stations around the country, so it wasn't a full-network FOX show.

Thank you, Jason! I'm guessing that Win, Lose or Draw was filler until Marsha Warfield's show debuted in March. I'm wondering if it was reruns of the network run, or if WNBC was briefly airing the syndicated version.

For the 1990-91 season, WNBC's 3 p.m. timeslot went to The Joan Rivers Show, which previously aired at 9 a.m. on WCBS. Joan was the lead-in to Donahue.

Also of note, WNBC, WCBS and WABC came to play at 4 p.m. in those days, with Donahue vs. Geraldo vs. Oprah. Geraldo lost -- by spring 1991, WCBS was airing Matlock reruns in that timeslot.

I didn't compare it to the Nielsen NBC list, so I was just thinking Win, Lose or Draw was still in its network run, but I see now that ended in 1989. Also, I noticed WNBC brought back Scrabble later in 1990 (just as a local run, it didn't seem to air on any other affiliate) up until Joan Rivers took the time slot in September 1990. I don't see any mention of Scrabble having a syndicated run, so I guess being they were the main NBC affiliate, they could just air repeats of a former network show like Scrabble?

Question -- When in 1990 did WNBC in New York change the soap lineup to Generations at 11:30, Santa Barbara at 12 and Days of Our Lives and Another World in pattern? I ask because I see that it had already happened by mid-May.

Per the Daily News archives, WNBC schedule:

    Ending 1/19/90:
    Golden Girls 11AM
    227 1130AM
3rd Degree 12PM (syndicated, not NBC, game show)
    Generations 1230PM
    Santa Barbara 3PM

    Beginning 1/22/90:
    Win, Lose or Draw 11AM
    Generations 1130AM
    Santa Barbara 12PM
    Classic Concentration 3PM
    Scrabble 330PM
