I was waiting for this. The point in 1990 when GL first drops below a 5. I believe this is GL's first HH rating below a 5, unless I missed one in 88/89

The wonderful Excel sort gets us the numbers super fast, so here's a sort I just did for you:

GUIDING LIGHT: LOWEST-RATED WEEKS (5.1 OR LOWER): JANUARY 1980-MAY 1992:

Bonnie Burroughs has just finished playing Gladys on GH. This week I was startled to see her playing Gretchen in Nov. '91 DAYS. I found a beautiful picture of her at that time.

That's the autographed photo she sent me back in 1991. Perhaps the exact one (with the autograph portion cropped out). A long time back, I think I saw her email on a casting website and asked her to confirm her birthday (not the year of course). She was one of the contract cast members I wasn't able to find a birthday for, so it was nice that she took the time to answer so I could add her to the birthday database. Of course, now that she's more famous, her birthday would be easier to find!

@JAS0N47I tried to search earlier in the thread to get this answer with no success, (so forgive me if it's been addressed), but is there any demographic data from the 1990s?

I am consistently fascinated that prior to Peacock, around 80% of DAYS audience was over 54.  So, I wonder if 20 years ago the demographic proportion was higher because the same audience was within that age range?

Yes, for the 1990's we have the demo data for every week from January 1990 to May 1992 except for those two missing weeks (5/20/91 & 5/27/91). So, the most recent data I can post would be over 31 years ago (from May 1992).   20 years ago would be 2003.

Line A is the weekly average. Line B is the quarterly average. Line C is the season average:

I just got through uploading 2 full episodes of DAYS Nov. '91 & there was a brief glimpse of a BREAKING NEWS screen during 11-18-91. The day before was 43:12 & that day was 35:21. So, when you get here, this is waiting for you. Just adding a drib or a drab of info.

There were no preemptions that week for any soap, so perhaps you had a local preemption.

    Here's what I have through 2/2/90:

    10/16/89-10/20/89
SOW has GL ahead of DOOL because of the 19 share (the numbers you have are the same though).

    10/23/89-10/27/89:
You have B&B's share at 20. SOW has 22.

    11/6/89-11/10/89:
Same numbers, but SOW has GL above B&B.

    11/27/89-12/1/89
I didn't type them all out but the share is different for virtually every show (this must be a fast national week?)

    12/25/89-12/29/89
OLTL and AMC are reversed from what SOW has. Same for Loving and SB but I think that's SOW's error.

    1/1/90-1/5/90
Nearly every show's ratings are different.

DIFFERENCES IN SOAP OPERA WEEKLY CHARTS VS. NIELSEN BOOKS (SO FAR)...

10/23/89-10/27/89: SOW has BB share at 22....Nielsen book has 20 share,
11/27/89-12/1/89: All shares in SOW are higher than in Nielsen book.

Thanks so much for comparing!  I see the problem with the "1/1/90-1/5/90" SOW chart. Those are actually the ratings (which match exactly in the Nielsen book) for the "missing" 1/8/90-1/12/90 SOW chart.  So SOW actually never published the ratings for the week of 1/1/90-1/5/90, which happened to be the week that GH tied YR for # 1. I will make that correction on my website and confirm that is actually the numbers for 1/8/90.

So, for the moment, my two best guesses are that SOW had a typo for BB's share the week of 10/23/89, and that obviously there was some miscalculation with the shares in the report sent to SOW for the week of 11/27/89, since every share in SOW is higher than the Nielsen book.

So, now we know there will sometimes be a discrepancy, but so far it has only involved 1 full week of shares (and 1 share for BB). All of the ratings SOW has published so far have matched exactly to the Nielsen books.

(And, yes, I don't care about the "placement" differences, when SOW places the higher share show, while my Excel chart just places them by title alphabetically when the rating is tied, so those you don't have to mention....only when either a ratings point or a share is different. Also, fast national weeks ended in 1987, so those are no longer a thing during the Soap Opera Weekly era).

    FROM THE VAULT: FARAH FAWCETT'S U/5 APPEARANCE ON "DAYS"...EPISODE # 1230...SEPTEMBER 18, 1970

In just her second year of acting, in September 1970, Farrah Fawcett appeared in one scene of "Days of Our Lives" as Blonde U/5 with Ed Mallory (Bill) and Bill Hayes (Doug). Her character does get a full name in the dialogue: Diana Washburn. The character reminds Bill of Laura.

As sometimes would happen on the master telecast report, the person writing it would seem to just sound out the name, so that is why she is incorrectly spelled on the report as Fara Fosset.

Jason, what was Pat Falken Smith's position between 1975-1978?

She left Days in April 1977, but she was the head writer from 1975-1977.

The Days scripts from 1975-1977 all said:

    Story by: William J. Bell

Written by: Pat Falken Smith (then followed by the dialogue writer)

These ones are ok. I can do it going forward, I'll just reply with thumbs up or a correction. If you want me to look back, let me know what weeks.

Thanks!  If you can check back to the first Soap Weekly chart from 10/16/89, that would be great.

1973-1975 Bill Bell was writing both Y&R and Days. Bill Bell wrote both Y&R and B&B from 1987-1993.

Bill was still the story consultant with Days into Spring 1978, so he was still on the Days payroll until then.

Join us tomorrow in the 1990's ratings thread as 1990, 1991 and 1992 start being posted.

Also, I don't remember getting a response the last time I asked this, but each day as I post the next batch of ratings, can some ratings fans here please compare these charts to the Soap Opera Weekly charts on this page and let me know if you see any discrepancies between the two. Thanks!

I was interested in the non-soaps sweeps period lists you were posting, if you could continue those. Thank you in advance!

I'll get to those eventually. I'm working on the daytime specials for 1982-1991 now.  The demos are easier to post since it's just a quick post of an image. The lists you want require more time to compile, so those will get done eventually.

Are there 1979-1989 lists for all the shows? I found the 1978 lists, and the 1990-1999 lists, but I've lost track of these! I've gone through 10 pages of this thread and only found AMC 79-89 and B&B 87-89.

I didn't convert those yet (I did for DAYS, AMC and BB), the rest are still in the "confusing" format I originally posted them in. But the full lists for 1979-1989 are in this thread, just not as "clean" as the lists now are for DAYS, AMC and BB.

  13. Thanks for the compliments! It's been a fun journey!!

I am wrapping up the 1992 books in the next few days, so I should have time this week to help out with any specific 1980's requests this week. If there's a certain week from the 1980's or early 1990's that you would like the demos of a show posted, please let me know.

  14. TWO BIG NIELSEN RATINGS EVENTS HAPPENING IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS!

Tomorrow, I will be posting the last weeks of 1989, which completes the entire decade!

On Tuesday, the week of 1/8/90 will be posted, which is the last week that Soap Opera Weekly did not publish. So, as of Tuesday, every week of Nielsen ratings from 1979-Present will be available online (except the week of 8/24/81)!
