As The World Turns Discussion Thread
This made me cry. I have never been able to wrap my head around the idea of Kathryn/Kim being gone. Julianne is the classiest of the classiest. Kelley sadly doesn’t even get much respect from ATWT fans. Melanie Smith left. Y’all still can’t get over it. Kelley played the hell out of that role. And that includes Emily’s stints as prostitute and attempted murderess.

Tina Johnson speaks of her time on SFT in Tom Lisanti’s recent book on TEXAS. Trying to remember how many TEXAS actors wound up on SFT…Tina, David Forsyth, Damion Scheller…was that it? Wouldn’t Donald May have made a great Lloyd? Carla Borelli as Liza? (Carla was foolishly written out of FALCON CREST.) Barbara Rucker as Patti?

You have to stop and think: was Estelle the mother to all five children? How many Mrs. Kendalls existed? Linda Cook played Aileen Kendall in flashbacks, but, at the time, we thought she was the only prior Mrs. Kendall. It seemed that Aileen’s name was changed to Estelle when Domini Blythe came on. But Lloyd (Peter Haskell) is said to be going through a divorce when he’s introduced (and when he’s pursuing Sunny). To me, Aileen is Estelle, and the mother to all the children. The wife Lloyd is divorcing is inconsequential. Wendy’s fate is never resolved.

Sarah was an adopted/foster child. The age difference between Michelle Joyner and Jackie Schultz would’ve been an issue. But I disagree with all the Women to Watch victims being sacrificed (and Suzi later). Joe Lambie (Lloyd) was way too young to have fathered the OG Steve and Michael Kendall. We never got to see all four sons on the show at once. That recast Steve was a joke, although I think we know why Steve Lundquist’s Speedo was cast…

TR eventually came to be a nickname for Theresa Regina, the name her kidnappers gave her. Estelle never referred to her as Rebecca, though, always Theresa. I guess that was what TR wanted. TR went to Switzerland. Jane returned for the last week. After Ryder died, TR never had a love interest. I assume they gave up. I wouldn’t have dropped John Loprieno as Danny but he got squeezed out by Quinn, really. A TR/Evie/Jerry triangle might’ve worked. David Forsyth and Jackie Schultz had good chemistry. I liked Luann though. I think Sharon Gabet would’ve been a more interesting recast, and she might’ve kept Joe Lambie on as Lloyd. But Suzi and Wendy were gone, and Liza was talking about leaving town to join Gary in Africa, so before the cancellation, I do believe Liza was getting phased out. Sunny and Patti and Evie were set up as heroines, and it was a small show.

Just imagining the last year of SFT with all of the flood survivors living in a department store owned by Judge Henderson, managed by Jo, maintained by Stu, with Estelle running the coffee bar with Bela as barista. Wilma sings at the piano in the center of the store, TR works in Juniors, Hogan and Patti run the publicity office, and Sunny is the onscreen spokesmodel in the local TV commercials. Liza models furs on the third floor, Cagney is store security, Quinn bartends at McCleary’s, the in-house restaurant, where Kate oversees as chef. Malcolm is head of the financial office, Ella Hobbs mans the cigar counter in men’s, Evie models in ready-to-wear, Suzi dies in an accident in the parking lot, and so on. I think it would still be on the air.

Robin is married to Paul Fletcher at this time, but does not appear in these episodes. Peggy’s mother is Maggie Scott, Bill’s mistress, who appears in these episodes. The location is unnamed but Cedars Hospital is mentioned and Papa Bauer has just returned from New York where he was living temporarily with Meta and Bruce. Papa speaks as if this has always been his home. The fact is the show stopped mentioning its California location for sometime and then when the location was mentioned again, it was now Springfield. Soap historians who say that every character on the show moved from California to Springfield are mistaken; they are just trying to fill in a plug in the show’s history when it was merely one of the first retcons on soaps. Springfield was suddenly always the home of the show. Meta mentions Five Points decades later as being a community nearby. And while we saw Alan Spaulding move to Springfield and buy his house, a few years later the Spauldings had always lived in Springfield and the house was now a mansion. Yes, Leslie is Jackson, not Rogers. My bad. Springfield was occasionally mentioned on AW as being within driving distance of Bay City. Oakdale was nearby too. All of the P&G soaps either took place in the same state or across state lines.

Mary Stuart said in BOTH OF ME that Lynn and Gretchen were the only Pattis she was close to. It’s nice to see more of Melissa, though. Is there any footage of Abigail, Gretchen, Pat, Leigh or Tina that I’ve missed? Abigail as Robin on TGL was chillingly effective. I’m curious about her Patti.

Did everyone see the 2 hours of TGL from 1966, posted yesterday? Man, the acting was soooo good I was especially impressed by Fran Myers Young Don Scardino was a bit syrupy, and he was still considered “young” two decades later on AW! The hallucinating by Bill of Ed, Papa and Maggie was well done. And it’s a little creepy to see Dr. Joe Werner hitting up Leslie Rogers! No Gillian Spencer as Robin, sadly Let’s discuss.

Ann liked a contract! If she had been available, I think she would have returned, but she got EON, then LOV. The successive deaths of Doug, Eunice, and John (with Tony and Robin dead too) was quite a bit of bleakness during only a few years on SFT.

Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
There are at least ten “supercouples” on the list who are undeserving. I was surprised any cancelled soaps were included, and I mourn only the exclusion of Sky and Raven of EON; Liza and Travis of SFT; and Kimberly and Shane of DAYS. I don’t understand why two-year couplings like Robert/Holly and Duke/Anna linger to this day. They were very short-lived And no Joe and Siobhan???

Whoever wrote this (the magazine is at your grocery checkout now)…never watched the show. Mary was killed off, but not Kate Mulgrew’s Mary. And Carolyn Hinsey “edited” this? Another section states that Lily and Holden reconciled at the end of ATWT. They did not. But 20 years from now, someone will pull this out and proclaim these as “facts.”

It made as much sense as Holly flirting with Alan, who was both ally and enemy to Roger over the decades. Or Sebastian. Ick. Pushing Holly at the “age-appropriate” men, then another psycho, was just desperately trying to undo all the Nursery Rhyme Stalker nonsense that undid Holly for good on the show. But they tried. Remember Tom Wiggin as Sam, the farmer/con man? Was he really going to be in a triangle with Holly and Cassie? (And Wiggin came back in the final year as a businessman in an Olivia story. He needed to come back to ATWT!) The improbable Ed/Holly reunion barely saves the day in two short scenes. And I would’ve brought Matt Hulswit back, not Simon.

Sarah was a foster child or adopted child. I wonder if Chris (Len’s son by Grace, adopted by Patti) and Tracey (Patti’s bio daughter) would’ve been older or younger than Sarah. I always have to believe that Jo saw her daughter and grandchildren offscreen even if it was never mentioned in scripts. Patti was off for almost a decade, and Jo wasn’t an absentee (grand)mother. Patti’s age is particularly ridiculous when I recall that her children are contemporaries or even older than their cousin Suzi.

It’s not Rod Arrants as Sam. But Adam Storke (ex-Ryder) and Larkin Malloy (ex-Sky, EON) are in the airport scenes. The reconciliation of Estelle and TR (why she calls her daughter Rebecca “Theresa (Regina)” is odd though) is quite touching. Jane was wonderful on the show. I always liked Louan and felt that she just got (hair)styled a bit too matronly as Liza compared to Sherry. It didn’t help that Patti hijacked Hogan. Sunny’s happing ending should’ve been with Hogan.

CBS Daytime
I have that too! Unfortunately, my Disc One is pretty much degraded at this point. Would you be able to burn me a copy of yours if possible, please? I miss all those EDGE themes in a row.

Yes, Jimmy could’ve been useful in later years, but even Tom Bergman didn’t make it until the end, nor did Janet or Liza’s brothers. i have such mixed feelings about SFT and its constant make-up of remnants of families. The Adamsons and Sentells came and went except for Sunny. The McClearys were missing a daughter at show’s end. All of the Kendalls were never onscreen together. Stu’s family was scattered to the winds. Jo’s family took its biggest hits with the death of Eunice, write-outs of Bruce, Patti, Len and the kids, and eventually the death of Suzi. Even the adopted granddaughter Sarah only lasted a year. We never got to experience Chris or Tracey as teens or adults. If only SFT had stuck with Jo’s family, the Bergmans, and essential outliers like Stephanie, Kathy, Scott and Sunny, it would’ve had a tight, cohesive cast. Introducing new love interests for the characters to be involved with (so that the two families weren’t constantly intermarrying) would’ve been required, of course, which justifies either the Kendall boys or the McCleary boys.
