Personally, I do believe that Angelica McDaniel was a champion for soaps and was one of the last holdouts for the old guard in how things were done in television broadcasting in terms of daytime television on the big three networks. However, I am not shocked she was let go and I don't think there was much else for her to do at CBS. The network's reasoning for folding daytime into current programming is sound since it's already been done by ABC and NBC in years past and with traditional broadcasting being a dinosaur in today's TV/entertainment climate. Soaps have already been duking it out with the rest of TV in terms of awards recognition with their categories being folded to compete with all dramas at the DGAs, GLAAD not bothering to nominate them, the lack of interest in submission for a WGA by the soaps themselves. It's all about change. It's the way of the world.

Right now, instead of competing with each other, the soaps, game shows and talk shows are competing against their overall profits individually and not in terms of what daypart they fall into. With streaming being ever more prominent, the soaps especially are leading the charge in online viewing habits. That's a good thing. That means that should broadcast transition to online even more, there is a place for that kind of programming. Heck, "Why Women Kill" on CBS All Access is a classic soap tale ala "Desperate Housewives" and it works online vs. broadcast because it's the type of show that streaming platforms need (soapy) to gain traction.

Despite the faults of Prospct Park's management, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" would have been perfect to transition online if they were canceled at any point in the last 6 months to a year. They were way ahead of their time from a business standpoint. Content notwithstanding.

Errol, with all due respect, McDaniel was ignorant when it came to soaps. The Talk was her thing. If you interview any headwriter, executive producer, behind the scenes people, ask them what they really thought of McDaniel. I mean really thought about her. Not public relations bull. They won’t miss her interference, that’s for sure.

  2. I find it so fitting that McDaniel was shown the door on the eve of her favorite show, The Talk’s new season starting Monday. The weak link on CBS daytime, The Talk, was her pride & joy and the only show on the schedule that she cared about. She knew nothing about soaps and interfered with Y&R to the point that no one could succeed with her interference. And CBS is not replacing McDaniel, which tells me that someone finally woke up and realized that she contributed nothing to the network. Karma. Justice. It’s a happy day.

You'd make a lot of people very very happy if you were able to share them. :) My first piece of advice would be do not put them into a VCR that you're not sure is 100% functional. Because then if the tape messes up you won't know if it was the VCR or the tapes and you could ruin a good tape. Try it first with a tape you don't care about. If no one else can or if you don't have a VCR, I'd be willing to convert them for you, but I need to check my VCRs cause it's been a couple of years since I've done it. You might as well try since you weren't using them anyway and the more years go by, the worst the chances are. How many do you think you have?

I went down to my basement and picked out 3 tapes. A couple of them did not work, but the third vhs tape played. It was a partial January, 1987 episode of Y&R (with Brenda Dickson) along with some GL and ATWT episodes from that same time. There was a high pitched sound in the background and some fuzzyness in the quality of the picture but it is playable. If you want it, it’s yours. I don’t have any plans to convert and upload my tapes, so I might as well give them away to people who will use them. Feel free to message me.

  4. The only thing that I can think of as to why Y&R didn’t get alot of attention is because it wasn’t in the same timeslot as GH, so it was bigger news when the timeslot competitor GL beat GH. I have an audiotape of the ET story where they interview Gail Kobe but I’ve lost track of it. Its somewhere in this house.

A bonus Holiday edition of Daytime TV, between their December 1981 and January 1982 editions.

It will be interesting to see GL's ratings for later in Marland's run to see if it stayed strong or he was running out of steam.

The show was rocky after he left and the Gail Kobe/Pam Long came along and even got it to#1 for a few weeks in 84.

The trouble with that regime IMO is that they threw out too much of the old structure and focussed on new characters and then further writers did the same until there was a patchwork of families - a couple of Bauers, some Reardons, Lewis and Shaynes. It was all too fragmented...

There is such a misconception regarding GL’s ratings in 1984. GL did NOT hit #1 in the summer of ‘84. Yes, GL beat GH in the ratings for 3 weeks in June of ‘84, (which was a huge accomplishment, even Entertainment Tonight covered the story) but Y&R was the number one rated soap during the three weeks that GL beat GH

  6. We got a little insight into just how many Live plus 7 viewers Y&R and B&B get from the CBS Press Release yesterday. Y&R is averaging 4.48 million this season, according to the release, which includes Live plus 7. Their Live plus same day is about 4.12 million, so Y&R adds about 360,000 viewers give or take in 7 days. Not a huge number compared to primetime shows. B&B adds about 240,000 in Live plus 7. These soaps are dying.

Laaawd. We really have a problem when B&B is #1. We're doomed.

I'd say that for sure if Phelps were still there at Y&R hacking away. LOL. I can't imagine who it'd be unless they promote from within. No one really comes to mind for Y&R. Am I missing anyone blatantly obvious? Y&R's driven away quite the talent over the years.

How sad we've fallen so far that Lisa DeCazotte could really be the Y&R producer in the future. Meh. But that's where we're at.

I'm sure on GH Gary Tomlin and Barbara Bloom are waiting in the wings. (I really do think Frank's time is coming. But then again, ABC seems checked out and Varni is just as bad)

Yep. She absolutely should be out the door.

Here's the thing though: do the networks care? Or are they just letting them continue to hang out to dry so they can ultimately justify cancelling them all? Or are they just really that inept? My guess? All of the above, lol.

I could not agree with you more! The genre is doomed! No one, in charge, cares. But I disagree with you about Phelps. I liked her work.
