45 really managed to lower the bar as a whole for who gets to lead us and what is acceptable.

What a sad place this has become. I refuse to believe hate will win long term, but even in the short term it's terrible to see. Yes, it should raise red flags. Talk about stacking the deck in his favor.

It's kind of like "not my president". I understand it, but we are affected by his policies even if we disavow him. The same will be true for the decisions SCOTUS makes unfortunately. One thing Trump has done is made this a "for us or against us" situation. The lines are pretty damn clear. Not that long ago we discussed issues in this thread like how undocumented immigrants were easy to exploit by the farming industry. I was pretty on the fence about what I thought was right. Now, we have kids in cages, so the economics of any of this is hard for me to worry about. He have to try to pressure these worthless politicians to do the right thing.

I was thinking something similar. I mean right now if you had a choice between the U.S., Canada and Europe would you pick the U.S.? If nothing else at least Canada and Europe actually help the people who go there. Of course, refugees don't get much of a choice and we aren't taking many here anyway. Not to be too paranoid about what's happening here. Maybe the ship will right itself in the next election cycle. Things feel unstable and unpredictable though. If I were a refugee picking the safest place for my family this would not be where I'd hope to land.

What I find disturbing is that Trump keeps calling for the suspension of due process. If he can do that to one group, where does it stop? I'd have to agree that people in the U.S are not that educated, at least. That's not an accident. There are groups in this country that actively thwart critical thinking, health and science education. And this is just foolish. Basically Trump trying to leverage a critical new tunnel for the NY/NJ region to get his boondoogle of a wall.

This struck me because we were just talking about naturalized citizens. It's a little more complicated then the headline, but damn if this administration can't find endless ways to create harm.

^ How ridiculous. There should be no extension. Taking any of these children was an act of evil, but under 5? What a terrible trauma. I wish nothing but pain on everyone involved in this.- The Politics Thread
I want to be happy about the fact that this guy is out, but will his replacement be better? Doubt it. Maybe he'll be better at pretending. Yes. I think people are on edge right now and are expecting the worse for 45 at every turn. Yet despite his best efforts we aren't living under some blood and soil doctrine. A citizen is a citizen as it should be.- The Politics Thread
This is really messed up.- The Politics Thread
This breaks my heart. Only 58% of people disapprove of 45's immigration policy. The part of me that sees the dark humor in these things is reminded of The Wire. The scene where Jimmy is upset about the witness being killed and tells Bunk he expects all of Baltimore to rise as one against the injustice (But they should have and we should too). https://twitter.com/politico/status/1014348081356296193- The Politics Thread
What a farce.- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
“He’s a handsy guy. Thankfully I was 29 and not 14,” continued Pearce I was a real Kevin Spacey fan, so it disgusts me to think of how long he was getting away with these assaults. Another reminder that no matter how much you like a celebrity we have no idea who they really are.- The Politics Thread
If we had any kind of reasonable leader he would take this opportunity and try to bring Canada into the deal as well. Instead we have someone who alienates allies at every turn and works against his own goals.- The Politics Thread
This is a good thread for people feeling despair, depression and anxiety because of the state of the nation. She's a Rabbi so you have to take it for what it is.- The Politics Thread
I think it was poorly written with weak arguments as well. The author said more than once Trump is a good father and close with his children. Really? What I remember is how Ivanka is his clear favorite because she chased after him begging for his attention as a little girl. Oh, and the stories of how he humiliated one of his sons in front of his classmates because he didn't wear a suit to a baseball game. When you have a favorite and your other children know it, you are a shitty parent. When you make your children come to you because you can't be bothered, you are a shitty parent. What Trump did do is many children. Maybe that's all that counts with some?- The Politics Thread
Not exactly news to any of us.- The Politics Thread
I think she's right about door to door being very effective.- The Politics Thread
^ Should be sanctions until every child is reunited with their parent. Speaking of which, good lord. The injustice is endless. Making poor parents pay to get their kids back. F*ck everyone involved with this. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/07/trump-separated-children-airfare/- The Politics Thread
There is no question about it. 45 doesn't even bother keeping up the pretense of sharing power. I guess we'll be cleaning up the environmental messes from these corporations run amok for decades to come. Of course, some damage can never be undone.- The Politics Thread
This is ridiculous. In normal times all of this regressive tax stuff would piss me off, but with what's happening on the border it's just a blip. Still, it's financially reckless and we will pay for it down the road.- The Politics Thread
