His father probably taught him to shake hands this way but can someone teach this man how to do a proper (i.e. non-creepy) handshake? His method is completely offputting. Just look at Abe's face after he retracted his hand!

I remember reading about this. Didn't something similar happen in Rhode Island? I think their former governor was swept out because of this.

There's an old phrase that Caribbean people say (and I am frequently fond of saying, myself) that suits just what you've just described: 'A promise is a comfort to a fool'. Some people fall for the words rather than the deeds. As I said in another post, when the stock market goes up, it very rarely benefits average people. When it plummets, however, we all get burned. @Vee I planned to read that article soon, it's been open in my browser tab (one of them, anyway). All I have to say so far is, why would anyone be dumb enough to think government can be run like a business? Remember how W was supposed to exemplify the CEO-in-Chief? Look how that turned out for the country. Even Bloomberg as NYC mayor was soon disabused of his assumptions that NYC could somehow be run as a Fortune 500 company. As much good as Bloomberg did philanthropically, the homeless population exploded during his tenure (an aspect that DeBlasio continues to struggle with) and NYC lost large numbers of its population, particularly artists and People of Color to other parts of the country. I thought that anyone with a brain and a memory would have known that one cannot run a government that has the responsibility to see to its peoples needs as a corporate brand. What a dodo!

The Orange Menace has reversed himself regarding his previous statements on the "One China" policy, which will undoubtedly be chalked up as Trump bowing to Xi on this one since it's well known that Xi has not engaged with the Trump administration in any way since Trump made those statements concerning the policy. Trump Tells Xi Jinping U.S. Will Honor ‘One China’ Policy This wasn't the first time, so I'm sure this won't be the last time Trump reverses himself, or is forced to do so.

From what I read, these farmers voted Trump simply for the taxbreaks. They chose to ignore his promises to deport illegal immigrants, thinking/hoping/wishing that he would not follow through. Now that the first waves of deportations of people with minor infractions has begun, somehow they are all flummoxed. I have no time, energy or inclination to understand people who voted for a man who has aligned himself with racists and white supremacists (but of course, we're all supposed to believe that race, not even subconsciously, was a factor). Their reasons for voting and their subsequent reckoning is between them and their conscience to wrestle with. Sounds as if these farmers did it out of pure greed and are now left to rue the consequences of their choice. This man said all along what he intended to do and people chose to ignore that and are now trying to put lipstick on a pig to try to justify their choices. People need to be honest, racism and sexism and xenophobia and all out exploitation is palatable for a significant number of Americans (the farmers themselves said that hiring legal workers would not cause them to raise wages). The sooner we stop pretending this isn't the case and deal with it in a forthright manner, the better off we'll all be.

Good, I'm glad! Trump administration is rushing out a bunch of executive orders steeped in goobledy-gook and causing chaos. Part of me thinks this is to try to quickly check-off a list of items just so they can claim to be active and also claim to fulfill their campaign promises. The other part of me thinks they are performing some type of sleight of hand while his blossoming kleptocracy springs into action robbing public coffers (e.g. severely weakening Dodd-Frank). In the meantime, hopefully, Trump and his cabal will be tasting bitter defeat after bitter defeat.

Davis Cup hasn't been scrapped for the simple fact that despite the fact that the schedule is a complete mess (why can't they just alternate each year with Fed Cup one year, Davis Cup the next??), the jubilant excitement that happened as the Argentine Davis Cup get its first title was something that you couldn't bottle and it was the main argument that people use to keep Davis Cup. Then the year before, all of Great Britain was exuberant when GB won after not winning since the 1960s (I think) and the year before that when the Swiss won the Cup there was a wellspring of exuberance for Federer fans seeing Roger and Stan win. If France wins this year...guess what? There will be a same explosion of exuberance, LOL. With all that enthusiasm, it's highly unlikely that anyone will ever get rid of Davis Cup for the foreseeable future. What they need to do is eliminate the annual competition and make it a biennal competition and just alternate with Fed Cup, that way the holders of the Cup get a full year to celebrate and hold onto the Cup instead of everyone forgetting who won the year before, as Marat Safin once joked.

Sounds like Boris may still be sore about Sascha's Davis Cup performance last weekend. He was there watching as Belgium nearly swept Germany 4-1. I know a lot of Germans were stunned by that and even though Belgium were former finalists for the Cup, David Goffin wasn't even there so many tipped Germany to win that tie. I guess Steve Darcis and company had other ideas. Darcis has always been an inconsistent talent but I was shocked to see Philipp Kohlschreiber go down like that in the first singles rubber and then Mischa and Sacha lost in doubles to two guys I'd never heard of before. It was a mess. Then in the reverse singles, I think Sascha's youth and inexperience worked against him as he seemed unable to get over the nerves. I think Sascha at 19 could be forgiven for kind of buckling under the weight of the pressure of being expected to carry the team at such a young age. Boris was on the team that won West Germany's first ever Davis Cup and then they won again the next year. Boris who won Wimbledon at 17. Even by now Boris should realize that there are no more teen phenoms in tennis. http://www.daviscup.com/en/news/253212.aspx

That's too bad, if true. Boris has a chance to take on a young German prospect with a lot of talent and room for growth and make an impact. I would've thought that Sascha would be just the type of pupil that Boris would love to take on- young, lean and hungry (okay, maybe the hunger is still a ??) but how much $$$$ does he need? I wonder if the request were coming from the German Tennis Federation (with the possibility of additional support, perks, etc), would Boris accept? I realize that having coached the #1 player in the world, perhaps he's used to a certain rate and probably doesn't want to come down from that rate but this is a chance for Boris to give back to his country (even though I realize he's had a complicated relationship with Germany) and be seen in maybe a more positive light at home?- The Politics Thread

Besides having someone in the WH who is utterly ignorant on what having a weak dollar vs. a strong one means for the general economy, here's more disturbing news for anyone who still thinks the Orange Menace will be a boon to the U.S. economy. Of course, in the scheme of things a booming stock market can often mean very little for everyday Americans but having a failing one definitely portends worse financial times for everybody.- The Politics Thread
Of course, the big dummy would be ignorant as to whether a weak dollar or a strong one benefits the U.S. economy- that has a lot to do with trade, something for which he seems to have a very unrealistic notion of how it operates. I wonder how much his father "contributed" to the Wharton School of Business in order to take him. So ironic that Trump was always trying to diminish President Obama's credentials when Trump himself is as ignorant as the day is long!- The Politics Thread
