This is when Addie, after her leukemia went into remission, was killed after she was hit by a truck.

Here are some articles regarding Addie Williams' death in 1974. Sorry they're chopped up! This one is when she was sick in the hospital (she had leukemia) right after Hope was born. Everyone thought she was going to die at this time. The article was from February 1974.

I know, some of them made me cringe, and most of those type comments had nothing to do with the content of the article.

CNN's website has a story today about Elizabeth Kemp (Betsy Crawford) being an acting coach. Although it discusses her career history, not a word about her being on "Love of Life."

The whole is Mark good or bad story sounds so confusing to me. He started off bad then went good then became bad?
It sounds a little like Will Jeffries.
Then he was kind of good again at the very last minute before he went over the cliff, lol!

Yes, Doug inherited Amanda's parentage from the Dobsons. That was one of their final storylines for GL, going to broadcast just a month or two before they left. My comments were not a swipe at Doug rather an observation that I found Amanda particularly obnoxious during that era. From a character standpoint, her behavior made perfect sense. I like to compare her to ATWT's Lily. Remember how Lily reacted when she learned the truth about Iva and Josh, and then later found out that Lucinda was responsible for Holden's amnesia? Every day she was upset and lashing out at someone about something. Well, Amanda was the prototype for Lily. Just as Lily evolved and became more likeable when she met Damian, so did Amanda with Mark. And, that story happened within a month or so of Doug's departure, so perhaps it had been planned by him all along. I do know that PFS wrote the scripts, regardless of whose idea the story was.
I thought it was a big mistake to write Amanda, Jennifer, and Mark out. That is another plot development of which I am unsure. I do not know whether or not Doug intended for Mark to be bad, or if later writers made him Samuel Pasquin in order to get rid of him. I do wish that they had all remained on the canvas longer.
I am unfamilar with "the late Classic GL", but the person is correct about Jennifer's brother Chet and Bill Herndon, who played him so over the top.
Yes, PFS created Company in one of the most bizarre accidents on daytime. It was surreal to say the least, but they certainly got a good deal of mileage out of it.
I had quit watching GL for a while in the late 70s. When I tuned in again my first experience of Amanda was when she had regressed to her little girl persona. I couldn't stand her and couldn't understand why so many men were attracted to her. I finally started liking her when she was with Mark and then he was killed off!

I do vaguely remember Mary Frann on this show. Her character was named D.B. and she was a business woman. She was always trying to break up Steven and Betty.

I don't remember this particular story but I loved Nick & Althea! Thanks for posting Matt!

That might be the end of watching Days for me if they made Julie Daniel's mother! Of course, I would love to see more Julie (and Doug) but it's looking less likely with all the other returns coming up. Susan said in a recent interview that Doug and Julie are going to be investigating Alice's secret off-screen.

Looks as though it might be when Bo & Carly were in Mexico (where they eventually found Victor chained up in a Mayan temple). I think that was toward the end of 1991.

I would say the nature of Julie's & Marlena's friendship was changed when Deidre returned to the show in 1991. I don't remember them interacting as much then Susan became recurring around 1993. It seems Marlena is considered Hope's peer now instead of Julie's.

Love these clips! The Salem Strangler was one of my favorite storylines on Days. I thought it was a good murder mystery and was more believable than the later serial killer stories that came later. The clip of Doug and Robert singing together (with Marty Davich at the piano) is priceless! I've been hoping to see a clip of them again. Thanks so much for posting!

I was very sorry to hear about Judy Lewis. The story of the return of Susan Dunbar's husband, Alan, was front-and-center when I first started watching Secret Storm. I always liked Judy.

Thanks, I always loved Denise Alexander on Days. The rivalry between her Susan Martin & Julie Olson (after Susan Seaforth took over the role) is what got me hooked on the show. Really missed her when she left the show.

Thanks so much to saynotoursoap. I'll just link the first two parts and you can see the rest on Youtube.
Random Tony beefcake in the first clip.

Loved these, especially the Lisa Brown scenes. I remember the scenes at the hospital, I thought for certain Nola had gone through with the abortion. Poor Floyd, he was a nice guy but I was so happy when Nola later ditched him at the altar. Lisa is one of my all-time favorite soap actresses, and Nola is near the top of my favorite soap characters.

Liked Crazy Carrie, screwing the delivery boy, but hated "normal," Carrie and her health food stuff she was talking about, This was one of Marland's first times where he took a sexual viable conflicted guy (Ross) and had him totally wuss out for a less then attractive chick. Sorry, the Carrie actress worked and works as a villainous Tracy, but not as some sex pot a good looking guy like Ross would fall totally for. I remember one horrible scene where she convinces Ross to take up "jogging," and they both have matching track suits!!!!
I hate to admit that I would have hated to see Carrie in therapy to merge her personalities..Marland's therapy scenes were tedious. The only good to come out of it is if she came out of it conflicted and kind of bad...dumped Ross and became a semi bad person.
I thought I was the only one who hated all that health food stuff Carrie used to talk about all the time. Used to get so sick of her and Ross sitting around eating yogurt all the time. And I thought Carrie was too milquetoast for Ross. I did like crazy Carrie though!

In 1977,Julie became involved with the Duvalls ,Karl and Sharon (Sally Stark and Alejandro Rey) that led to the short lived lesbian story where Sharon professed her love for Julie. The whole thing was quickly dropped.
And didn't Karl want Julie to have a three-way relationship with him and Sharon too? I remember Sharon giving Julie a cameo or other brooch when she left Salem.

Was that Keith Charles playing Joan's husband? It sounds like his voice.

I don't know why I didn't realize that was Penberthy.
At least P&G still found some roles for their talents, even small roles, up to the early 90s. Maeve Maguire had a short role on ATWT in 1992. I'm sorry that was discontinued.
I would have liked seeing more of Adelaide. They could have brought her to Oakdale after Kirk/Ellie broke up, especially since that started a long dry spell for Kirk. She would have been more interesting than characters like Aunt Mary.
Thanks for the newsletter. At first I thought Lauren Martin Harkins was Laura Leighton and wondered what Leighton was doing at an ATWT event.
Scott DeFrietas started becoming very handsome around the late 80s and that certainly never changed, and hasn't today. He was also a decent actor and represented a part of ATWT which Goutman and the later CBS and P&G people and Sheffer/Passanante never understood. And of course, the brilliant John Valente.
Seeing AMC's end just reminds me again of how little anyone at P&G or CBS gave a damn about the end of ATWT. I get very annoyed when I think about that damn cast photo which was chopped together and poor Kathleen Widdoes wasn't even in. You could sense some of the sadness and anger from Don Hastings in that Mental Floss article.
Well, Beverly Penberthy & Pat Barry do have a similar tone to their voices, maybe that's why you got them confused. Love them both!

saynotoursoap posted an episode with Iris a few days ago. I posted it in the Video thread, if you haven't seen it yet. Her work in the episode is so incredible - there's a scene where she is hugging him and has her head on his shoulder, and doesn't want to let go, then catches herself, and looks horrified and ashamed.
Oh no, I didn't see that. Thanks for telling me, I'll check it out!

GH is one of the first soaps I remember watching since my mother & older sister watched it, must have been the late 60s. Jessie Brewer was the main heroine then, and going through her trials and tribulations with her rotten husband Phil! Also remember Peggy McCay playing an alcoholic nurse named Iris, who had an affair with Lee Baldwin.

I preferred Kathy Glass as Alison because she had a vulnerability similar to Mia Farrow's portrayal in the night time version. I don't remember getting that sense of vulnerability from Pamela Shoop.

In the second pic Flannery looks like a cross between Abby Dalton and Donna Mills!
Do posters think Mac Carey deserved a best actor award?
Well, the only other nominees that year were Bill Hayes & John Beradino. I'm not sure what John Beradino's story was for the pertinent time period, although I think I was watching GH then. At the time, I wanted Bill Hayes to win. The nominations would have been for the stories in 1974, so that was when Doug was dealing with Addie's leukemia, Hope's birth,& his depression after Addie was killed. I think Bill did an excellent job in his portrayal of Doug that year, especially since Doug had been so devil-may-care previously. But, I do think Mac was a good actor & he was involved in the same story. Here is a scene of him and Frances Reid, in a flashback episode, shortly after Addie's death.
